Washington, D.C.—Today, Representative Jamie Raskin (MD-08) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) introduced bicameral legislation that would crack down on the corrupt influence of foreign money in American elections. As foreign ownership in American companies soars, the Get Foreign Money Out of U.S. Elections Act seeks to close a major campaign finance loophole that has allowed U.S. companies appreciably owned by foreign entities to pour unlimited sums of money into our elections.

“The Roberts Court’s outrageous decision in Citizens United continues to spell disaster for American democracy, as it allows oligarchs and autocrats from around the world to wield their influence over our elections through corporate ownership and political interference,” said Rep. Raskin. “I’m introducing the Get Foreign Money Out of U.S. Elections Act with Senator Whitehouse to root out foreign corporate corruption of our politics and make sure our elections are going to be decided by the American people and not overseas oligarchs.”

“Thanks to the disastrous Citizens United decision, foreign actors can exploit the same corrupting dark money channels that allow unlimited corporate spending,” said Sen. Whitehouse. “We should get rid of the damned stuff entirely, but this bill would at least safeguard our democracy from foreign adversaries influencing American elections from the shadows.”

Foreign nationals are buying stock in American companies at record rates. From 1986 to 2020, foreign ownership of American stocks increased tenfold from 4 percent to 40 percent. As foreign ownership of American corporations grows ever larger, we must legislate to make certain that foreign money is not entering our politics and buying our politicians.

While current law bars individual foreign nationals from personally spending in U.S. elections, the Roberts Court’s 2010 Citizens United v. FEC decision enabled corporations to engage in unlimited political spending. This created a loophole that allows unlimited political spending by American-registered corporations—including major multinationals—that are foreign-owned, foreign-controlled or foreign-influenced. This bill rejects spending in American politics by foreign-owned, foreign-controlled and foreign-influenced corporations (using well-supported foreign ownership thresholds to determine when U.S. corporations should be prohibited from spending). It does not prevent individual permanent residents living in the United States from exercising their constitutional right to contribute to candidates.

Rep. Raskin and Sen. Whitehouse have long led the fight to protect the integrity of American elections. In May, Rep. Raskin introduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act (PODA). PODA would require presidential candidates to submit their tax returns to the Federal Election Commission and strengthen disclosure requirements for online political advertisements. In December, Rep. Raskin introduced the Ranked Choice Voting Act which would allow voters to express their ranked support for multiple candidates in all congressional races, making our elections fairer and more representative.

At a time when families are struggling to afford housing, health care, groceries, utilities, and child care, President Trump is demanding an unprecedented expansion of military spending. Senator Ed Markey’s Slash the Pentagon Act, S. 4799, offers a clear alternative: invest in people instead of pouring another mountain of public money into weapons, military contractors, and endless war.

The bill would cap the amount Congress could authorize for the fiscal year 2027 national defense budget at $750 billion—half of the Trump administration’s proposed $1.5 trillion military budget. Importantly, the legislation would prohibit the Defense Department from meeting the cap by cutting the Defense Health Program or military personnel accounts, protecting service members’ health care, pay, and other personnel funding.

The bill does not automatically transfer the savings into domestic programs or identify every Pentagon program that should be reduced. Instead, it establishes a firm spending ceiling and requires policymakers to make choices about overpriced weapons systems, failed programs, excessive contractor profits, and other wasteful expenditures.

Senator Markey argues that the proposed $750 billion difference could instead support investments that make people genuinely safer—including canceling medical debt, fully funding SNAP for two years, providing a decade of Head Start and Early Head Start, and expanding and electrifying passenger rail. These examples are not spending provisions contained in the bill, but they demonstrate what becomes possible when Congress stops treating the Pentagon as the only agency entitled to unlimited resources.

Where the bill stands

Senator Markey introduced the Slash the Pentagon Act S. 4799 on June 16, 2026. It was read twice and referred to the Senate Armed Services Committee, where it is currently pending. It has not yet received a committee hearing, markup, Senate floor vote, or House vote. Available congressional tracking sources currently list Markey as the bill’s sole sponsor.

Dear Speaker Johnson, Leader Jeffries, Chairman Jordan, Ranking Member Raskin, Chairman Garbarino, and Ranking Member Thompson:

On behalf of Voto Latino and the undersigned interfaith, human rights, business, immigration, veteran and civil rights leaders, we write to demand the immediate introduction of articles of impeachment and a full congressional investigation into Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s handling of deaths in detention, shootings by ICE and CBP agents and other violence perpetuated by DHS. Secretary Mullin has demonstrated a profound and systemic failure to exercise sound judgment and oversight of agency actions as required by his office. His actions and oversight constitute a gross dereliction of duty that directly threatens the public interest.

We are extremely concerned about the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas and the shootings by DHS agents under his tenure. Sec. Mullin has failed to provide meaningful oversight over the rogue and unchecked pattern of excessive force weaponized against entire communities across the country, the tragic and preventable deaths of individuals under ICE custody and the deplorable, sub-human conditions under which at least 60,000 immigrants and U.S. citizens are currently subjected to within detention centers nationwide.

Under his stewardship, DHS has fundamentally eroded public trust in federal law enforcement, violating its core statutory mandate to protect the homeland while preserving civil rights. Under Secretary Mullin, the department has continued to engage in unchecked enforcement operating completely outside the bounds of human dignity, statutory oversight, and due process. Rather than upholding constitutional protections, his leadership has actively incentivized a reckless and violent approach that subverts the rule of law. This systemic mismanagement not only compromises the physical safety of our communities but constitutes a direct betrayal of the core democratic values upon which this nation was founded.

Documented Rights Violations Under Secretary Mullin’s Leadership:

1. The Fatal ICE Shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine:

In less than a week, two separate killings of Latino men at the hands of ICE have been reported, laying bare a devastating escalation of lethal force. On July 7, 2026, a federal immigration agent operating under Secretary Mullin’s administration shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a beloved husband, father, and small construction business owner who had lived productively in the United States for 35 years and was in the process of regularizing his immigration status.¹ ICE agents operating in unmarked SUVs pulled over his work van at sunrise. Rather than a routine civil enforcement action, agents deployed lethal force, shooting Mr. Salgado Araujo in the abdomen in broad daylight and handcuffing him as he groaned on the pavement.

Just days later, on July 13, 2026, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old from Colombia who was fully authorized to work in the United States was shot and killed by ICE agents at an intersection in Biddeford, Maine. This horrific string of tragedies is not isolated; it is part of a systemic pattern of unmitigated violence under Secretary Mullin’s administration.² Our families are bearing the devastating brunt of a hyper-funded federal agency operating with zero restraints, sweeping power, and no oversight. We firmly join Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, alongside state and federal leaders, in demanding an immediate, fully independent, and transparent investigation into these killings. We demand a real, unbiased third-party inquiry, the public release of all relevant video footage—including body-worn camera recordings—and a comprehensive, unedited accounting of exactly what happened.³

2. Obstruction of Congress and Restricting Congressional Oversight of ICE Facilities:

Under Secretary Mullin, DHS has systematically impeded the constitutional right and duty of members of Congress to conduct oversight of federal detention facilities. This was starkly demonstrated at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in New Jersey.⁴ When lawmakers, families, and advocates attempted to investigate systemic abuses—including hunger strikes over rotten food, overcrowding, and the tragic custody death of Jean Wilson-Brutus—Secretary Mullin’s administration responded with extreme obstruction and escalatory tactics.^{5 6 7} Rather than allowing transparent oversight into a facility unfit to house detainees, DHS implemented restrictive visitation policies designed to shield private prison operators like the GEO Group from public and congressional scrutiny.⁸ Furthermore, when peaceful protests erupted outside the facility, ICE agents deployed unprovoked, escalatory force—including the use of tear gas, pepper spray, and batons against both detainees inside and advocates exercising their First Amendment rights outside.⁹

3. Flagrant Defiance of Court Orders and the Federal Judiciary:

During his first appearance on Capitol Hill as Secretary on June 2, 2026, Secretary Mullin repeatedly refused four separate times to commit to following future federal court orders when judges ruled that DHS is acting illegally. When pressed by Senator Chris Murphy on whether he would implement judicial rulings, Secretary Mullin callously claimed he could not answer because he views the judiciary as “politicized,” stating that judges “use their bench for their political opinion, not just the rule of law.” As Senator Murphy noted during the panel, DHS has violated nearly 100 court orders this year alone, a flagrant noncompliance that directly fueled the catastrophic, longest government funding lapse in U.S. history earlier this year.¹⁰

4. Mass Family Separation and Human Toll on U.S. Citizen Children:

Under Secretary Mullin’s expanded enforcement directives, the human toll on children and families has reached catastrophic proportions. According to a May 2026 analysis, more than 205,000 children have had a parent detained by federal authorities since the current administration took office. While this systemic crisis began before his tenure, Secretary Mullin took command of the agency on March 24, 2026, and actively accelerated these operations. Just two months into his administration, the pace of family trauma has intensified, with the overall figures now including an estimated 145,000 U.S. citizen children and north of 50,000 children under the age of six. More than 22,000 children have had both parents detained, leaving them entirely abandoned. This deliberate orchestration of mass family separation, carried out through the aggressive raids and detention operations expanded by Secretary Mullin, constitutes an unconscionable attack on innocent children and a flagrant violation of child welfare and basic human dignity.¹¹

5. Surge in Custody Fatalities:

At least 21 people have tragically died in ICE custody over the course of 2026. Alarmingly, eight of these preventable deaths have occurred since Secretary Mullin took office in March 2026, highlighting a severe and immediate health and safety crisis under his brief tenure.¹²

6. Aggressive Expansion of Family Detention Infrastructure:

Since March 24, 2026, Secretary Mullin has aggressively pushed forward six detention center expansions across Texas, Arizona, California, and Louisiana. This includes the highly alarming construction of a 528-bed facility specifically engineered to hold families and young children directly adjacent to a deportation flight hub.¹³

The survival of our system of checks and balances depends on your willingness to act. We demand that you hold Secretary Mullin accountable for his systemic violations of constitutional protections and his direct assault on Congressional authority. Congress must act now to remove him from office before more lives are lost.

Imagine learning that a corporation spending millions to influence an American election is significantly owned by foreign investors.

That is not democracy. It is influence laundering.

Federal law bars foreign nationals from directly spending in U.S. elections. Yet a gaping loophole allows American-registered corporations with foreign ownership to spend corporate money shaping who wins, which laws pass, and whose voices are heard.

After Citizens United, dark money exploded. In the 2024 federal election cycle, groups and shell companies that concealed their donors spent more than $1.9 billion—a record, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.1 Between 2018 and 2022, at least $163 million of foreign-influenced cash flooded political races in six states alone. 2

Voters should never have to wonder whether political ads flooding their screens were financed to serve their communities—or foreign investors hiding behind an American corporate address.

People Power United is calling on Congress to pass the Get Foreign Money Out of U.S. Elections Act. The bill would prohibit political spending when one foreign investor owns at least 1% of a company’s voting shares or multiple foreign investors collectively own at least 5%.3 4

Dear Representative/Senator:

The 215 undersigned organizations, who represent a broad set of stakeholders who care about human needs, urge you to prioritize protecting people struggling to make ends meet by rejecting further cuts to basic needs programs via a “Reconciliation 3.0” package or other legislative vehicle.

We represent human service providers, faith groups, national, state, and local policy experts, and civil rights, labor, and other organizations concerned with meeting the needs of people with low incomes. We are deeply concerned about families struggling with rising costs of health care, food, housing, and other human needs, and many in our networks are dealing with the aftermath of H.R. 1’s historic cuts to basic needs programs including SNAP, Medicaid and the ACA, higher education, the Child Tax Credit, and other human needs programs. We’re already seeing the impacts, for example:

• From enactment of H.R. 1 last year through March 2026, more than 4 million people lost access to SNAP’s food assistance including more than 700,000 children;

• 2 million children have lost Medicaid/CHIP coverage with experts flagging that many more are losing coverage in 2026;

• CMS’s new Medicaid work reporting rule is creating confusion and chaos for states and will harm patients;

• More than 15 states proposing or already taking away care from people with disabilities and older adults through cuts to Medicaid home and community based services;

• Approximately 5 million fewer Americans have coverage via ACA marketplaces while millions more grapple with higher premium costs;

• 2.6 million American citizen children with parents who don’t have Social Security numbers lost access to the Child Tax Credit (CTC) while one in four children (19 million) are left out of the full value of the CTC; and

• Lawfully present immigrants, including seniors who have long participated in Medicare, are already losing access to health and food assistance.

At a time when many are dealing with rising costs and policy changes that make it harder to put food on the table and access health coverage, we are alarmed about reports that House leaders are looking to fast track additional cuts to basic needs programs via another reconciliation package, further increasing hardship for families across the country and disrupting the lives of low-income working families, service providers, and localities. Nationwide, community-based organizations have struggled to address increased needs in their communities, exacerbated by rising costs, while facing uncertainties about funding for programs (we note that over 500 organizations urged Congress to “insist that the Administration follow authorizing and appropriations law across all federal agencies”).

Polling shows the widespread support for protecting basic needs programs, and advocates including children’s groups and disability advocates have sounded the alarm about the impact of budget decisions on local communities. Families are facing a basic needs crisis and further cuts to basic needs programs will only exacerbate the hardship that families, providers, and local policymakers are grappling with every day by making it harder for families to buy food, access care and health services, pay rent, and more. We believe Congress must protect health care, care services that enable older adults and people with disabilities to remain in their homes, child care, the Earned Income Tax Credit, food assistance, housing, and other basic needs programs, not exacerbate families’ everyday crises. The undersigned organizations urge you to reject any Reconciliation 3.0 package that threatens human needs and instead work with Leadership along with colleagues to protect and strengthen basic needs programs.

Wyatt Detention Center files for bankruptcy - The Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation, which operates the Wyatt Detention Center in Rhode Island, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after years of financial trouble, management controversy, and civil rights/prisoner rights protests. This is a win for human rights and immigration accountability because it shows the instability and public cost of detention systems built on cruelty, debt, and human suffering — and reflects years of community pressure against Wyatt’s role in immigrant detention. Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Trump’s crackdown upended one immigrant’s life. This month he finally became a citizen - A Burmese immigrant in San Francisco became a U.S. citizen after a Trump-era processing freeze delayed his oath ceremony. His citizenship ceremony moved forward after a federal court struck down the policy and ordered processing to resume.
This is a win for immigration justice because it shows how legal challenges can restore dignity, citizenship, and voting rights for real people. San Francisco Chronicle

A key forever chemicals lawsuit settles out of court in North Carolina
More than 2,600 people settled claims against Chemours and DuPont over PFAS contamination after years of litigation. Dear Member of Congress:

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and the 131 additional undersigned civil and human rights organizations are profoundly concerned about the recent fatal shooting of Mr. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, age 52, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Houston. And as of this writing, we are gathering information about yet another fatal shooting by ICE yesterday in Biddeford, Maine.

These tragic shootings appear to fit into a pattern that was completely foreseeable, given the steadfast refusal of Congress to engage in proper oversight of ICE and Customs & Border Protection (CBP). We call on you to hold ICE accountable by demanding a full, independent, and transparent investigation into what led to these deaths, and to bring ICE and CBP under control of Congress, the courts, and the Constitution.

As has been widely reported, until Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was living the American Dream. Like millions of immigrants before him, he came to the U.S. from Mexico more than three decades ago in search of opportunity. He settled in Houston, built homes for a living, and eventually started his own construction company. Together, he and his wife raised three sons, all of whom pursued higher education and careers of service and innovation: one is a teacher, one is an engineer, and one is studying engineering in college. According to his family, Mr. Araujo had no criminal record and was actively pursuing legal avenues to regularize his immigration status.

During the early morning hours of July 7, Mr. Araujo was picking up members of his construction crew before heading to work when he was reportedly pursued by an unmarked vehicle. A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson has acknowledged that ICE was not actively looking for Mr. Araujo. ICE has presented certain claims as to what happened next, immediately before Mr. Araujo was fatally shot. These claims simply cannot be accepted at face value.

ICE’s claims related to the shocking and untimely death of Mr. Araujo are particularly suspect because, as DHS itself acknowledges, the agents involved in the shooting were not wearing body-worn cameras. And DHS’s attempt to pin the failure of the officers to wear body-worn cameras on a partial government shutdown strains credulity, given that the last shutdown ended several months ago, and given that ICE had received years’ worth of funding under the 2025 budget reconciliation bill. Especially in light of this failure, every other piece of relevant evidence, including surveillance video, radio communications, and witness statements, must be preserved and released to the public.

The claims are also suspect because DHS has, in multiple instances, falsely tried to justify immigration enforcement-related shootings by claiming victims tried to harm officers. In the 2025 shooting of Marimar Martinez in Chicago, ICE alleged she tried to ram federal agents, but video evidence later showed that to be false, and the criminal charges against her were dismissed. Earlier this year in Minneapolis, ICE claimed Renee Good tried to hit an officer with her vehicle before she was fatally shot, but video showed she was clearly steering away from the officer before he shot her. Days later, an ICE agent shot Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg, which DHS claimed was done in self-defense, but the claim was later disproven by video evidence. That same month in Minneapolis, DHS officials falsely accused Alex Pretti of “wishing to inflict harm” on officers, but video soon showed he never brandished a weapon and had been disarmed before he was fatally shot.

In short, ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have a long and growing history of using excessive and deadly force, presenting false narratives, and refusing to hold officers accountable.

At the same time, Congress has given ICE and Border Patrol staggering amounts of additional funding, while refusing to provide any new meaningful oversight or safeguards against civil and human rights violations.

We urge you to demand a fully independent investigation as well as the immediate release of all available evidence related to the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and this most recent ICE-related shooting in Maine. The public deserves the truth, and the Salgado family deserves justice. We urge you to work towards meaningful accountability measures as we move forward.

That is not election security. It is intimidation.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to use federal power to interfere in our elections, and members of his administration have refused to rule out deploying armed forces or federal agents to polling locations.

No president should be allowed to turn our polling places into military checkpoints, seize ballots or voting machines, or place armed agents between the people and the ballot box.

Trump may believe he is above the law, but our elections still belong to the people.

Democracy aka rights and freedoms belongs to the people—shaped by our voices, protected by our courage, and accountable to all of us.

But democracy cannot survive on words alone. It requires ordinary people to notice injustice, refuse to be silent, and take meaningful action. As the Honorable Congressman John Lewis reminded us:

“When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up. You have to say something; you have to do something.”

Those words are not simply a reflection on history. They are instructions for this moment.

Fear is a tool used by those who want us silent. Fear tells us that speaking out is dangerous, that our voices do not matter, or that injustice happening to someone else is not our responsibility. Courage tells us something different: that we belong to one another, that our voices carry power, and that justice denied to one community weakens the promise of justice for us all. Let us choose courage over fear.

Justice for Lorenzo Salgado & Johan Sebastian Guerrero

On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo—a father, worker, coworker, and member of his community—was shot and killed by an ICE agent while driving his crew to a job site in Houston. Lorenzo was not a suspect. He was not under investigation. He was going to work.

His life mattered. His family deserves answers. His community deserves the truth. And the public deserves accountability from government agencies that exercise enormous power in our names.

Lorenzo’s death cannot be hidden behind secrecy, excuses, or impunity. The rights and freedoms we claim for ourselves must be protected for every person, everywhere—regardless of immigration status, occupation, language, race, neighborhood, or country of origin.

Tonight, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, people will gather for the Justice for Lorenzo Movement Call. Participants will hear from Lorenzo’s loved ones, receive updates about the case, and learn how to take action in the weeks ahead. Showing up is one way we say Lorenzo will not be forgotten.

The People’s 250: America Belongs to All of Us

Friends,

America’s 250th must be more than fireworks.

It must be more than parades, flags, speeches, and patriotic slogans from politicians who praise freedom while stripping it away. It must be more than a celebration staged by billionaires, corporations, and extremists who want the symbols of America without the promise of America.

The People’s 250 must be a recommitment: America belongs to all of us.

For nearly 250 years, people before us sacrificed, organized, marched, prayed, taught, built, cared, voted, resisted, and rose to move this country closer to its highest promise. They demanded that liberty not be reserved for the wealthy, the white, the privileged, the powerful, or the well-connected. They demanded that justice not be selective. They demanded a democracy where the people — not kings, not corporations, not corrupt politicians — had the power to shape the future.

They carried forward the promise of liberty and justice for all.

Now it is our turn.

We owe it to those who came before us to tell the truth: America has never fully lived up to that promise. Too many people have been denied dignity, safety, opportunity, freedom, and power. Too many communities have been pushed aside by institutional racism, billionaire buyouts, corrupt policies, voter suppression, poverty wages, housing injustice, attacks on education, and systems designed to keep opportunity out of reach.

That is why “equality” cannot be the end of the sentence.

The real promise must include equity. Because when generations of people have been locked out, left behind, underpaid, over-policed, ignored, erased, displaced, and denied access, simply saying “everyone is equal now” does not repair the harm. Equity means removing barriers. Equity means telling the truth. Equity means making sure every person has a real chance to live, work, learn, vote, heal, love, worship, speak, and thrive with dignity.

That is the America we deserve.

We deserve a nation where everyone who calls America home is treated with respect. We deserve rights that extremists cannot erase. We deserve a government with leaders that serves the public good, not billionaire greed. We deserve courts that protect the Constitution, not corruption. We deserve leaders who honor the rule of law, not authoritarians who believe power belongs only to them. We deserve schools that teach truth, communities where families can afford to live, health care people can access, clean air and water, reproductive freedom, voting rights, worker power, and equal protection under the law.

This is what freedom over fascism means.

It means refusing to let cruelty become policy. It means refusing to let propaganda replace truth. It means refusing to let fear divide us from our neighbors. It means refusing to let anyone tell us that democracy is too broken, too messy, or too far gone to save.

At People Power United, we believe freedom is not a slogan. Freedom is a daily act of activism.

Freedom is calling Congress. Freedom is showing up at the town hall. Freedom is helping a neighbor register to vote. Freedom is speaking out when rights are under attack. Freedom is sharing the truth when lies are spreading. Freedom is protecting the vulnerable. Freedom is demanding accountability. Freedom is organizing in our communities, building people power, and refusing to hand our future over to extremists, billionaires, and corrupt politicians.

So as America turns 250, let us celebrate with purpose.

Let us honor those who came before us by continuing the work they carried forward. Let us reclaim patriotism from those who use it as a weapon. Let us build a democracy rooted in dignity, respect, equity, justice, and freedom for all.

The People’s 250 is our reminder and our rallying cry: America belongs to all of us.

As America marks its 250th year, this moment demands honesty about the values this nation claims to stand for: liberty, justice, dignity, equality, democracy, and the public good. For generations, people have stood up to defend those values and refused to let power decide whose lives mattered.

Now it is our time.

Right now, Trump and his Republican allies are telling working families to accept less. Less health care. Less food assistance. Less housing support. Less climate action. Less help for children, seniors, veterans, students, and people just trying to survive.

But somehow, there is always more money for war.

No Blank Checks for Wars No One Wanted

Congress is now considering the National Defense Authorization Act, a massive war-budget bill that would help push total military spending toward a staggering $1.5 trillion for 2027.12 This war budget was introduced just one year after Congress rolled back funding for Medicaid and food assistance — leaving millions without health coverage and more than 4 million people without SNAP benefits. 3 4 5

War over workers. That is the choice they are making.

They cut care.

They cut food.

They cut help for families.

Now they’ve turned around and demanded another blank check for a war, a check separate from the nearly $88 billion Trump is demanding from Congress to further fund a war in Iran that the American people did not ask for, did not need, and should not be forced to pay for.6

We declare: no more blank checks for war while families are being abandoned at home.

A government that can fund bombs should fund health care. A country that can enrich defense contractors should feed children. A Congress that can find billions for war should find the courage to protect seniors, house families, lower prescription drug costs, strengthen public schools, and keep people alive.

Do not let them tell us there is no money.

There is money. There is plenty of money in the richest country on earth. The question is who gets it.

Right now, too many politicians are choosing military contractors over Medicaid, war spending over food assistance, and billionaire giveaways over working families. That is not security. That is abandonment.

Real security is a child going to bed fed. Real security is a parent seeing a doctor before a crisis becomes an emergency. Real security is clean water, safe housing, good schools, stable jobs, and a democracy where public money serves the public good.

America does not need another blank check for a war no one wanted. America needs leaders with the moral courage to invest in life, dignity, freedom, and the people who make this country possible.

Trump’s war on clean energy is not about “energy dominance.” It is about domination: domination of our air, our public lands, our household budgets, and our future by fossil fuel billionaires who want one more generation of profits while families pay the price.

Clean energy means more than solar panels and wind turbines. It means lower energy bills, cleaner air for our children, safer communities, new jobs, and a future that is not chained to oil spills, poisoned water, extreme heat, and corporate greed. It means putting people before polluters.

But Trump and MAGA Republicans are trying to drag America backward. His administration has moved to freeze or cancel clean-energy funding approved by Congress, and Reuters reported that a federal judge had to block the administration from freezing billions in climate and infrastructure grants.1 The Energy Department also announced the termination of 321 financial awards supporting 223 projects, totaling about $7.56 billion. 2

That is not leadership. That is sabotage.

At the same time, Trump has attacked offshore wind while other nations build the industries of the future. The Trump administration has also hindered offshore wind development, revoked federal offshore wind leases, and stopped major East Coast projects, even though offshore wind has brought billions in investment and supports thousands of jobs. 3

This is what corruption looks like in real time: punish clean energy, reward polluters, weaken protections, and pretend the public asked for it.

We did not ask for dirtier air. We did not ask for higher bills. We did not ask for our children to inherit a country where billionaires get tax breaks while families get floods, fires, asthma, and economic insecurity. And we sure did not ask for a government that treats clean-energy workers like collateral damage in a political war.

Clean energy is freedom. Freedom from fossil fuel price spikes. Freedom from polluted neighborhoods. Freedom from the lie that America must choose between good jobs and a livable planet. We can have both. We must demand both.

Congress needs to hear from us now. Tell them to stop Trump’s war on clean energy, protect clean-energy investments, defend workers, and put people before polluters.

Cutting Heat, Cooling, and Shelter Is Cruelty

Right now, Trump is attacking housing and homeless assistance programs that help people stay housed, find shelter, and survive moments of crisis. He is also trying to eliminate heating and cooling assistance that helps families stay safe during extreme weather. This is hurting seniors, disabled people, low-income families, children, veterans, unhoused neighbors, and working people already struggling to make ends meet.

Let’s be clear: this is not about keeping communities safe.

This is an authoritarian overreach that threatens the basic public good. No one should be abandoned in the cold, left to suffer in dangerous heat, or pushed further into homelessness because politicians chose cruelty over care.

Billionaires Get Breaks. Families Lose Shelter.

We should be clear: this is not just one bad budget cut or one harmful policy. It is part of a larger fight over who our government serves — the people, or the powerful. A government that can hand favors to billionaires and corporations while cutting housing, shelter, heat, and cooling support is not protecting freedom. It is manufacturing suffering.

This moment may feel painful, frustrating, or exhausting. But it is not hopeless.

When leaders attack housing assistance, homeless services, and energy support, they are not just targeting one program. They are weakening the promise of democracy itself. At People Power United, we believe democracy only works when every eligible voter can make their voice heard and hold their leaders accountable to the will of the people. Voting is not a privilege for the powerful, a favor from politicians, or a right that should depend on whether Trump approves of how you cast your ballot.

That is why this latest attack on voting by mail is so dangerous. In essence, Trump wants the United States Postal Service (USPS) to act as an election gatekeeper — deciding who it will and will not deliver ballots to.1 That is not its job. The Postal Service delivers the mail. It should not decide who gets access to the ballot box.

Voting by Mail Is Under Attack Again

Trump’s executive order directed USPS to reshape vote-by-mail rules and refuse to deliver ballots to voters who are not on certain government-approved lists. The proposed rule would require states to submit lists for approval by the Trump administration and would allow the United States Postal Service to reject ballots it claims do not comply.

Let’s be clear: this is not election security. This is voter suppression wrapped in bureaucracy.

The Postal Service Must Deliver Ballots, Not Voter Suppression

There is some good news: Judge Indira Talwani blocked key parts of Trump’s mail-voting executive order and found that USPS lacked authority to issue binding mail-voting regulations.2 But this fight is not over. As this makes its way through appeals and the courts, we, the people, must keep speaking out.

The Postal Service should not deliver Trump’s preferred mail. It should deliver all mail — medicine, paychecks, birthday cards, bills, letters from loved ones, and ballots. It does not belong to a president, a party, or a political agenda. It belongs to the people.

Voting is fundamental to democracy. That this Administration would direct USPS to adopt measures to impede voters from casting their ballots is shameful. And that USPS would allow itself to be used for political purposes to advance the President’s irrational objection to mail-in voting is unlawful and contrary to the commitments it made to settle our litigation. This proposal also violates the spirit and commitments of a 2021 settlement by the USPS with the NAACP that requires the timely delivery of election mail.3

Let’s be clear: this is not about election security. This is about making voting harder, creating confusion, and giving the federal government dangerous power over state-run elections.

The Mail Belongs to the People

Millions of Americans rely on voting by mail: seniors, disabled voters, caregivers, rural voters, students, military families, and workers with long shifts. If USPS can block ballots based on politically driven lists, eligible voters could be silenced through no fault of their own.

The same Postal Service is being called on to act as some election gatekeeper. That is not, and should never be, their job. We cannot wait for the final court ruling to defend democracy. We must demand that USPS deliver all election mail to all eligible voters — not Trump’s preferred mail, not politically approved mail, not ballots filtered through a partisan loyalty test.

Today, the Supreme Court showed us exactly what is at stake.

In two major immigration rulings, the Court did not simply answer technical legal questions. It opened two more doors for the Trump administration to choose detention over due process, fear over fairness, and political theater over a working immigration system.

First, the Court ruled that the Department of Homeland Security may revive a policy that allowed the government to turn noncitizens away at the border without hearing claims that they may qualify for asylum. Then, in another 6–3 ruling, the Court allowed President Trump to end deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian migrants who were permitted to live and work here because their home countries were unsafe.

I want to be very clear about what this means.

This is not just about paperwork. This is not just about ports of entry. This is not just about one policy, one court case, or one group of migrants.

This is about whether the United States will honor the basic principle that people fleeing danger deserve a chance to be heard before the government turns them away, locks them up, or sends them back into harm’s way.

Seeking asylum is a human right. It is also part of our legal and moral tradition. A serious country can secure its borders, stop trafficking, prevent violence, and process immigration cases with order and fairness. But a serious country does not use chaos as an excuse for cruelty. A serious country does not tell people to follow the law and then slam the door before the legal process can begin.

The lie is that cruelty equals safety.

It does not.

Trump and his Republican allies are pouring billions into enforcement and detention while refusing to build the fair, efficient immigration system our communities actually need. Trump signed a $70 billion bill to fund ICE and Border Patrol through the remainder of his administration, and $38 billion of that package goes to ICE, $26 billion to Customs and Border Protection, and $5 billion more to DHS.1

But where is the matching investment in justice?

Where are the judges? Where are the attorneys? Where are the translators, asylum officers, legal orientation programs, case managers, court staff, and work authorization processors needed to make the system actually function?

Here is the danger hiding in plain sight: when government refuses to process people fairly, detention becomes the pressure point. It becomes the punishment. It becomes the threat. It becomes the money machine.

Right now, the U.S. immigration court system is buckling. At the end of May 2026, TRAC reported more than 3.2 million active cases pending in immigration court, including more than 2.3 million people waiting for asylum hearings or decisions.2

That is not processing. That is a backlog big enough to swallow families whole.

People do not disappear from their lives just because the government refuses to run a fair system. They still have children in school. Jobs to report to. Rent to pay. Doctors to see. Communities that count on them. Families who love them.

And then the government points to the very backlog it failed to fix and says: more detention.

No.

Warehousing people is not processing. It is punishment without conviction.

We have already seen what happens when detention is rushed, privatized, and treated like a political stage instead of a legal system. A Government Accountability Office review of Camp East Montana found that ICE and the Army rushed the opening of the largest ICE detention facility to date, negatively affecting planning and acquisition. GAO also found that the government paid for meals and services for 5,000 people even when the facility held far fewer people, wasting millions of taxpayer dollars.3

That is not law and order.

That is cruelty with a contract attached.

And yes, this is also a profit pipeline. Private prison corporations and contractors benefit when detention expands. Politicians benefit when fear is useful. But families pay the price. Taxpayers pay the bill. Communities absorb the harm. And people seeking safety are turned into line items.

This is how the circle widens.

It starts with asylum seekers. Then TPS holders. Then Dreamers. Then undocumented workers. Then mixed-status families. Then students. Then protesters. Then voters. Then anyone who refuses to look away.

That is how power grabs work. They do not come for everyone at once. They isolate one group, test how much cruelty the public will tolerate, and then move to the next.

This is why we cannot accept the false choice between safe borders and human dignity.

We can and must have both.

A real immigration reform agenda would secure the U.S. border while reducing the number of immigration detention beds. It would reform the legal immigration system to better meet U.S. needs. It would invest in enhanced security and technology at ports of entry to help stop the smuggling of illegal weapons and narcotics, including fentanyl. It would address the root causes of migration from South and Central America through diplomacy and humanitarian aid. It would permanently protect DACA and Dreamers.

It would increase funding to process immigration applications and work authorization applications more efficiently. It would expand case management programs that help undocumented immigrants and their families understand and meet their immigration court obligations. It would hire 1,600 new asylum officers and processing personnel to improve the efficiency of the asylum system. It would hire 375 new immigration judges to help move cases through the courts. It would eliminate the six-month waiting period before asylum seekers can apply for work authorization so people can support themselves, contribute, and live with dignity while their cases are pending.

That is not radical.

That is responsible.

And here is the part this administration does not want us to notice: the public is not demanding cruelty. A substantial majority of voters — 69% — support the U.S. having a system for asylum seekers to legally migrate here to seek protection.4

People understand what politicians pretend not to understand: safety and compassion are not opposites. Due process and border security are not enemies. Human dignity is not a loophole.

The path forward is not more cages. It is more courts. More case management. More legal pathways. More accountability. More humanity. More truth.

We can have secure borders without cruelty. We can protect communities without scapegoating immigrants. We can stop trafficking and fentanyl without punishing people fleeing persecution. We can build an immigration system rooted in safety, dignity, and due process.

But we have to demand it.

So today, we are asking our members of Congress to act.

Fix this broken immigration system. Protect the dignity and rights of asylum seekers. Protect Dreamers. Protect families. Fund fairness, not fear. Fund courts, not cruelty. Fund people, not cages.

A country built on liberty and justice for all should not replace courts with cages.

Not in our name.

Power belongs to the people — and when we stand united, we can still force this country to live up to its promise.

Reclaiming Justice for Our Bodies and Lives

It is personal. It is painful. And it is still true: we are not going away.

Four years ago, on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case and ripped away a constitutional right that generations before us marched, organized, and sacrificed to secure.1 They thought that ruling would silence us. They thought fear would shrink us. They thought exhaustion would make us disappear.

They were wrong.

We are still here. Still rising. Still organizing. Still championing reproductive freedom. Still demanding the right to control our bodies, our futures, our families, and our lives.

I share this because I know what it means for bodily autonomy to be more than a slogan. Long before today, I survived gang rape. I moved forward, but I never forgot what it meant to know that if I had needed abortion care, that choice was mine. Not a politician’s. Not a judge’s. Not a billionaire’s. Not a stranger’s. Mine.

And that is what this anniversary demands of us: truth, courage, and action.

Since Dobbs, the cruelty has been impossible to ignore. Across this country, people have been denied care, forced to cross state lines, pushed into medical danger, threatened with criminalization, and told that their pain, their bodies, and their futures belong to the state.2 Survivors of rape have been retraumatized by laws that pretend exceptions exist while making care nearly impossible to access. Women, girls, trans people, and nonbinary people have been treated as political targets instead of human beings with dignity.

Let’s be clear: this was never just about abortion. It was always about power.

The same extremists attacking abortion are coming for IVF, contraception, medication abortion, gender-affirming care, voting rights, public education, and the freedom to live safely and fully in our communities. They want us isolated. They want us ashamed. They want us quiet.

But we are not quiet.

We are the people who turn grief into action. We are the people who turn outrage into organizing. We are the people who believe progress is possible because we have seen ordinary people move mountains when they refuse to surrender.

The Women’s Health Protection Act would help restore and protect the right to abortion and reproductive freedom nationwide. It would put health, dignity, and personal freedom above political control. It would say what should never have to be said in a democracy: our bodies are our own.

And we must also stand with survivors when powerful men and weaponized institutions try to punish them for telling the truth. Standing with E. Jean Carroll is part of the same moral demand: believe survivors, protect survivors, and reject any effort to use power as a tool of intimidation.

Bad things happen when good people do nothing. But beautiful, powerful, history-shaping things happen when good people show up.

So today, we show up. For ourselves. For our children. For our neighbors. For every person who has been told to suffer in silence. For every survivor. For every patient. For every family. For every future we still have the power to protect.

We are still here. And we are not going away.
