Communities Not Cages: Disappeared in America Through ICE Warehouse Detention

ICE’s detention expansion is not immigration policy. It is a moral emergency. It is a calculated campaign of cruelty aimed directly at our communities. The Trump administration is already locking up more than 70,000 people and is openly pushing to cage more than 100,000 at a time. Now it is driving toward an even darker nightmare: warehouse camps that could hold as many as 92,600 people across the country. Let’s say clearly what this is. It is not safety. It is not order. It is not justice. It is mass dehumanization by design. It is a system built to make people easier to isolate, easier to exploit, and easier to become disappeared in America.

These warehouse detention schemes are especially vile because they reduce human beings to objects. Parents. Workers. Neighbors. Loved ones. People with names, families, dreams, and rights could be packed into industrial spaces built to store goods, not protect life. That is the point. When people are hidden away in remote, makeshift detention sites, cut off from family, legal support, and community oversight, they can be disappeared in America with less public scrutiny and less accountability. A bigger cage does not make cruelty humane. It only makes that cruelty easier to hide.

And the danger does not stop at the warehouse doors. These facilities are not built with the water, sewage, sanitation, or healthcare systems needed to safely confine thousands of people. Disease can spread quickly. Public infrastructure can be strained. Entire nearby communities can be forced to carry the health and environmental fallout from a system rooted in fear, secrecy, and neglect. Once again, working-class communities and disenfranchised communities are being told to absorb the damage from a machine of punishment built for someone else’s profit and political theater.

Because yes, there is profit in this cruelty. Corporations stand to make money by selling or leasing warehouse space to ICE and helping turn human suffering into a business model. That is obscene. People are not cargo. They are not inventory. They are not products to be processed, stacked, and discarded for cash. When public money is used to cage human beings in warehouse camps while families struggle for housing, healthcare, schools, and clean water, that is not governance. That is state violence dressed up as policy.

But the story does not end there. Across the country, communities are pushing back. From Utah to Minnesota, from Oklahoma to Virginia and Mississippi, people have organized, resisted, and stopped these detention projects. They are demanding investment in life, not cages. They are demanding schools, clinics, housing, clean water, dignity, and freedom. They are proving something authoritarians never want us to remember: organized people can beat organized cruelty.

And this moment demands memory. This country has already lived through the shame of using makeshift sites to imprison Japanese Americans in the 1940s. That horror was wrong then, and it is wrong now. We do not honor that history with silence. We honor it by refusing to let more people be disappeared in America under a different name, in a different building, through the same old machinery of cruelty and racism.

Stop the Slaughter. Ban Assault Weapons.

More mass shootings. Too many lives have been stolen. Too many families have been shattered. Too many communities have been forced to carry grief that should never have existed in the first place. We are tired of the funerals. Tired of the prayers with no policy. Tired of the excuses from politicians who offer sympathy in public while protecting the weapons that keep slaughtering our neighbors in private. Enough is enough. Congress must pass a federal ban on assault weapons.

Let us be clear: people should be able to live, learn, worship, work, and heal without fearing that a weapon of war will turn an ordinary day into a massacre. As champions for progress, we believe eligible individuals can own firearms. But no right is untouchable when it is stripped of responsibility, accountability, and public safety. Assault weapons are designed to maximize carnage. They do not belong in our neighborhoods, our schools, our libraries, our hospitals, or anywhere innocent people gather. Weapons of war have no place in civilian life.

A ban on assault weapons must be part of a larger effort to finally drag our gun laws into the present. That means universal background checks for all gun and ammunition sales, so deadly loopholes cannot keep costing lives. That means red flag laws that are actually enforced before warning signs become body counts. That means preventing domestic abusers from accessing firearms, because violence in the home too often becomes violence in the community. It means limiting magazine capacity, banning bump stocks, requiring concealed carry permits, restricting open carry, and prohibiting firearms in schools, libraries, and hospitals where people should be safe.

It also means establishing mandatory waiting periods that can stop impulsive violence before it becomes irreversible tragedy. And it means ending liability shields that protect gun manufacturers, sellers, and interest groups when negligence and disregard for human life contribute to harm. Victims of gun violence deserve their day in court. Families who have lost everything should not have to watch powerful industries cash checks while hiding behind special legal protections.

The truth is brutal and simple: assault weapons make mass killings deadlier, communities more traumatized, and survival less likely. They do not protect freedom. They terrorize ordinary people. And every day Congress refuses to act, it sends a message that profit, cowardice, and political calculation matter more than human life.

Now is the time to demand our elected officials act. We cannot afford to wait any longer.

Impeach Pete Hegseth for War Without Congress and Abuse of Power

This is what accountability looks like when people refuse to stay quiet.

House Democrats have now introduced six articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth, saying he has “demonstrated a willful disregard for the Constitution.” 1 Good. They are right to name it. They are right to act. And they are right to put this fight where it belongs: in public view, under pressure, with the people watching.

Because let’s be honest about what this is.

Pete Hegseth is not just another reckless appointee. He is what happens when authoritarian power puts loyalty above law, cruelty above conscience, and ego above democracy. From the beginning, here at People Power United we said the United States military deserves leadership grounded in integrity, competence, restraint, and fidelity to the Constitution.2 Not ideological fanaticism. Not macho performance. Not grievance politics dressed up as patriotism.

Trump put Hegseth at the top of the Pentagon for one reason: obedience. Not wisdom. Not experience. Not steadiness. Obedience.

And now the country is living with the consequences.

First, Hegseth should be impeached for helping wage war without Congress. The impeachment resolution accuses him of helping initiate and escalate hostilities against Iran without a declaration of war or specific authorization from Congress, and for failing to seek meaningful consultation with the very body the Constitution empowers to decide questions of war. That is not a minor procedural dispute. That is a constitutional line being crossed in broad daylight.

The power to declare war does not belong to Donald Trump. It does not belong to Pete Hegseth. It does not belong to any swaggering strongman who thinks the Constitution is a speed bump on the road to more violence. That power belongs to Congress because the framers knew war is too grave, too deadly, and too dangerous to be left in the hands of men hungry for power and applause.

Impeach Pete Hegseth Now

When a defense secretary helps bypass Congress and ignores the Constitution, he is not protecting democracy. He is helping to dismantle it.

Second, Hegseth should be impeached for reckless disregard for civilian life and the laws of war. The impeachment articles accuse him of authorizing, condoning, or failing to prevent military force that caused large civilian casualties, including the strike on a girls’ school in Minab. Investigators reportedly believed American forces were likely responsible.3 Outdated targeting intelligence may have played a role. Senators later pointed to Hegseth’s own words, including “no stupid rules of engagement” and “death and destruction from the sky all day long,” as evidence of a mindset that treats restraint like weakness and civilian protection like an inconvenience.

Let’s be crystal clear.

Civilian safeguards are not weakness. The laws of war are not optional. Dead children are not collateral messaging problems. Shattered families are not footnotes. When the person running the Pentagon talks like mercy is foolish and destruction is strength, innocent people pay first and the truth gets buried second. Don’t even get me started on Hegseth quoting Pulp Fiction and acting like it was a Bible verse.4

That is not leadership. That is moral failure armed with state power.

Third, Hegseth should be impeached for abusing power and betraying public trust. The impeachment articles accuse him of gross negligence in handling sensitive military information through unsecured communications, obstructing congressional oversight, and politicizing the armed forces. A Pentagon inspector general report found that Hegseth sent sensitive, nonpublic strike information over Signal in a way that risked harm to DoD personnel and mission objectives.5 He has used religious imagery to attack the press 6 and carried himself less like a public servant in a constitutional democracy and more like a man convinced he answers only to power, ego, and his own mythology.

The Pentagon is not a campaign prop. It is not a television stage. It is not a throne for culture war fantasies. It is a public trust, and Hegseth has no business holding it.

This is a pattern.

A pattern of recklessness.
A pattern of cruelty.
A pattern of constitutional contempt.
A pattern of power abused by someone who should never have been given it.

And that is why impeachment matters.

Not because it is politically convenient.
Not because it makes a good headline.
Not because Democrats need a talking point.

It matters because democracy dies when people in power can launch war without Congress, endanger civilians without consequence, abuse public trust without accountability, and still expect the country to shrug and move on.

We will not move on.

This is a moment for accountability. This is a moment for power to the people. Now is the time for us to speak out, show up, and hold Pete Hegseth accountable before more lives are put at risk, more trust is destroyed, and more of our democracy is handed over to lawless men who mistake power for permission. A nation reveals its values by what it funds, what it protects, and who it is willing to leave behind. Right now, the United States continues to pour enormous resources into war and militarism while millions of people here at home still struggle to see a doctor, fill a prescription, or pay a hospital bill. Families are forced to ration insulin, delay cancer screenings, skip mental health care, and live under the crushing weight of medical debt. That is not strength. That is a moral failure.

And we have been here before. Last year, we stood at the Capitol with fellow activists to demand what every person deserves: healthcare, not warfare.

We stood alongside people in wheelchairs, people crying out for the right to live with dignity, people refusing to stay silent while Congress threatened healthcare funding yet again. Some were arrested simply for demanding Medicaid, for fighting for their lives, for insisting that disabled Americans, elders, children, and working families matter more than bombs, war budgets, and handouts to the wealthy. That moment was a warning, and it was also a promise.

We were championing healthcare, not warfare then, and we are still championing it now.

Healthcare, Not Warfare

Healthcare is not a luxury. It is not a privilege reserved for the rich or the lucky. It is a human need and a public good. No one should have to beg for care. No parent should have to choose between rent and a prescription. No senior should have to fear getting sick because treatment could mean bankruptcy. No person with a disability should have to plead with lawmakers to recognize their humanity. When people are denied care, the damage ripples outward through families, communities, and generations. When care is treated like a commodity instead of a right, suffering becomes policy.

We are constantly told that war spending is urgent, necessary, and untouchable. But what could be more urgent than keeping people alive? Trump and Republicans are attempting to sneak another dangerous policy into law while most folks are focused on the Iran war, rising gas prices, and out-of-control inflation driving up the costs of healthcare, housing, education, and childcare. It all has to do with Section 702 of FISA.

Congress may vote on Section 702 of FISA tomorrow, and this is a critical moment for all of us to speak out.

Block Trump’s warrantless surveillance

Lawmakers should not hand the government more unchecked power to spy on our communities without fixing the dangerous loopholes that threaten our privacy, our dignity, and our freedom.

What is at stake is simple:

• Section 702 has been used in ways that sweep up Americans’ sensitive information.

• The data broker loophole allows the government to buy personal data instead of getting a warrant.

• Backdoor searches let the government search Americans’ communications without probable cause.

• New AI tools make it easier to analyze geolocation, web browsing, and other private data at a massive scale.

• That opens the door to profiling, racial targeting, political abuse, and unchecked surveillance.

• The public does not want this. Only 12 percent of Americans want Section 702 extended as-is. Huge majorities want Congress to close the backdoor search loophole and the data broker loophole.

No More ICE Warehouses in Our Communities

Friends,

ICE’s detention expansion is not policy. It is a moral emergency and a deliberate assault on our communities. The Trump administration is already locking up more than 70,000 people and is openly pushing to cage more than 100,000 at a time. Now comes the next horror: warehouse camps that could hold as many as 92,600 people across the country. That is not public safety. That is mass cruelty by design.

These warehouse schemes are especially vile because they treat human beings like cargo. Parents, siblings, workers, neighbors, and loved ones could be packed into makeshift industrial spaces built to store products, not protect life. Cutting people off from family, legal support, and community oversight will only fuel more abuse, more neglect, more illness, and more death. A bigger cage does not make cruelty humane. It only makes that cruelty easier to hide.

The danger does not stop at the warehouse doors. These facilities are not built with the water, sewage, and sanitation systems needed to hold thousands of people. Disease can spread fast. Local infrastructure can be overwhelmed. Nearby communities can be forced to carry the public health consequences. Once again, working-class communities and communities of color are being told to absorb the damage from a system built on fear and exploitation.

And let’s tell the truth about what is driving this. Corporations stand to profit by selling or leasing warehouse space to ICE and turning human suffering into a business model. ICE recently bought a Utah warehouse for about $145 million even though it was assessed at roughly $97 million.1 That is obscene. People are not inventory. They are not objects to be processed, stored, and discarded for cash.

But communities across the country are pushing back, and that matters. Communities from Utah to Minnesota, from Oklahoma to Virginia and Mississippi, have organized, resisted, and stopped these projects. They are demanding schools, healthcare, housing, clean water, and real investment instead of cages and secrecy. They are proving that organized people can beat organized cruelty.

This moment also calls on us to remember. Our country has already lived through the shame of using makeshift sites to incarcerate Japanese Americans in the 1940s. It was wrong then. It is wrong now. We do not honor that history with silence. We honor it by rising up and refusing to let it happen again.

A country cannot call itself free when the people who cook the food, teach the children, stock the shelves, clean the buildings, drive the buses, and care for the sick are told to sacrifice while billionaires collect more power, more tax breaks, and more control. Workers Over Billionaires is not just a slogan. It is a moral line in the sand. It means our labor matters more than their greed, our families matter more than their fortunes, and our democracy matters more than their influence. There are three things we need to do to uplift workers over billionaires:

Tax the rich so our families, not their fortunes, come first.

That is not envy. That is justice. Working people are told there is never enough for good schools, affordable housing, health care, childcare, paid leave, or decent wages. But somehow there is always enough for tax loopholes, corporate subsidies, and giveaways to the wealthy. That is not an accident. It is a choice. When billionaires and giant corporations are allowed to hoard wealth while ordinary people struggle to afford groceries, rent, and medicine, the government stops serving the public and starts serving the powerful. Taxing the rich is about restoring balance. It is about making sure the people who benefit the most from this country also invest in its future. Our families should come before their fortunes. Our children should come before their offshore accounts. Our communities should come before their stock portfolios.

🚨Tell Congress: Make the Ultra-Rich Pay Their Fair Share

No ICE. No war. No private army serving unchecked federal power.

A government that spends billions on detention, deportation, militarization, and endless war while telling working people to accept less is showing us exactly what it values. Repression is not safety. Fear is not freedom. A nation cannot claim to protect families while tearing families apart through raids, detention centers, and policies rooted in cruelty. It cannot claim to defend peace while pouring public money into war and violence. And it cannot call itself democratic if federal power is used like a weapon against communities instead of as a tool to protect human dignity. Real safety comes from stable homes, good jobs, strong schools, health care, legal protections, and peaceful communities. People need care, not cages. People need opportunity, not occupation. Public money should build lives, not destroy them.

Expand democracy, not corporate power. Defend free and fair elections.

Billionaire rule does not survive without political control. It survives when corporations buy influence, when wealthy donors drown out the voices of ordinary people, when voter suppression blocks participation, and when elections are manipulated to protect power instead of reflect the will of the people. Democracy is supposed to belong to all of us, not just those who can afford lobbyists and super PACs. Free and fair elections are how working people defend themselves against oligarchy. When we expand voting rights, protect election access, strengthen unions, and challenge corporate dominance, we move closer to a country where people matter more than profit. Democracy must be defended, expanded, and lived.

War should never be the whim of one man. Peace should never depend on how close Trump is willing to push the world toward catastrophe. Since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, the region has been driven deeper into bloodshed, fear, and instability. Even after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire on April 7, the danger has not passed. Reuters and AP both report that the ceasefire is fragile, its terms are disputed, and wider regional violence could still pull the United States into a deeper conflict. This is not peace. It is a pause, and ordinary people know how quickly a pause can become a permanent disaster.

The American people do not want another endless war. The Guardian reported that a clear majority of Americans oppose this war and want the United States to end its involvement quickly. That matters, because people power begins with telling the truth about what our communities need. We need healthcare, housing, schools, and relief from crushing costs. We do not need another war that burns through lives abroad while families here at home are told there is never enough money for basic dignity. Every bomb dropped in our name is a choice, and the people have every right to reject that choice.

Congress still has power, and that is where pressure matters most. Reuters reports that lawmakers are preparing another vote to require congressional approval for further military action against Iran. At the same time, Congress is being pressed to fund this war machine even further. That means this is a threshold moment. Members of Congress can still choose to block more war, cut off the money, and restore basic checks and balances. If enough constituents speak up, loudly and relentlessly, cracks can widen and political fear can shift. People power is not symbolic. It is leverage.

Silence is not neutrality when civilian devastation is being threatened. Trump’s threats to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges could amount to war crimes under international law because civilian infrastructure cannot be lawfully targeted unless strict legal standards are met. When leaders talk openly about wiping out the foundations of civilian life, the response cannot be indifference. The response must be moral clarity, public pressure, and collective refusal.

Trump’s Iran Threat Should Alarm the World

Friends,

Trump is unhinged, and he is endangering the world with threats to escalate genocide in Iran. Over the last week, he has dragged the United States and the wider world deeper into disaster by threatening to bomb Iran’s power plants, bridges, and other infrastructure, and on April 7 he warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight.”1 That is not leadership. That is recklessness backed by military force, delivered in language that treats mass civilian suffering as leverage. The danger is not abstract. Reporting has made clear that the war is already taking a horrifying toll, with civilians living in fear, families under siege, and children paying the price for the ambitions of powerful men.

That is why the simple truth matters: almost 80 percent of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump.2 People who call America home are not just registered voters. They are children, elders, immigrants, disabled people, permanent residents, undocumented neighbors, and everyone whose life is shaped by American power whether they ever cast a ballot or not. Using the total U.S. population and Trump’s vote total, the math is clear: only about 22 percent of the people who call America home voted for him. That means nearly 80 percent did not. No president gets to act as though the public handed him permission to terrorize another civilian population simply because he won an election. A president is supposed to represent every person who calls America home, not just voters, not just loyalists, and not just the rich and powerful.

And the legal stakes are real. “Over 100 International Law Experts Warn: U.S. Strikes on Iran Violate UN Charter and May Be War Crimes.”3 International humanitarian law is clear that parties to a conflict must distinguish between civilian objects and military objectives.4 Civilian infrastructure is not supposed to become a target for political tantrums, military theater, or retaliatory spectacle. When a president threatens sweeping attacks on power plants, bridges, and infrastructure that civilians depend on to live, the world should hear that for what it is: a threat that raises serious war-crime concerns.

Children are not leverage. Families are not bargaining chips. Civilization is not a hostage situation.

There is also a genocide-warning framework that people should understand right now. Gregory Stanton’s widely recognized Ten Stages of Genocide are classification, symbolization, discrimination, dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, persecution, extermination, and denial.5 These stages are not always linear. They can overlap, accelerate, and feed off one another. That matters because Trump’s rhetoric about destroying a civilization, normalizing mass death, and treating an entire population as disposable is not something decent people should dismiss as bluster. It is a warning sign. We are supposed to recognize danger before the worst becomes normalized. We are supposed to speak while people can still be protected.

Trump’s war is also a massive and dangerous failure at every level. It is putting the whole world at risk, driving up energy prices, killing civilians, and turning even some of his own supporters against him. As Americans struggle with insane gas prices at home,6 Trump is escalating a war that is murdering Iranian children and families abroad.7 This is what failed leadership looks like: more death, more chaos, more instability, and more suffering for ordinary people. He is not making the world safer. He is making it more dangerous. He is not projecting strength. He is exposing how reckless, cruel, and unfit he truly is.

This is why we the people must speak out. We must document what is being threatened. We must preserve statements, reporting, and public records. We must demand oversight, accountability, and international scrutiny. The International Criminal Court only has jurisdiction over genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression. That does not mean every public threat automatically becomes a criminal conviction. It does mean people have every right to report threats of mass violence, preserve evidence, and demand that no one, including a U.S. president, be treated as above the law.

But silence helps cruelty grow. Documentation matters. Public pressure matters. Refusing complicity matters.

Reckless men do not get to gamble with human life, and we will keep speaking out, documenting the danger, and demanding lawful international scrutiny until these threats end.
