Twenty-five years ago, September 11, 2001 changed us forever.

Nearly 3,000 people left home that morning expecting an ordinary Tuesday. They kissed their families goodbye. They went to work. They boarded airplanes. They made coffee, answered phones, sat at their desks, and went about their lives.

So many never came home.

I know where I was that day, as do many of you. Time stopped. Our hearts broke.
Today, 25 years later, we remember them.

We remember every life stolen. Every family forever changed. Every empty chair at the dinner table. Every birthday, graduation, wedding, and ordinary Tuesday that came afterward without someone who should have been there.

We honor the firefighters who climbed those stairs while everyone else was coming down.

We honor the police officers, emergency workers, service members, recovery workers, and volunteers who ran toward danger.

We honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93 who knew what was happening and chose courage.

And we honor the survivors, families, and first responders who have carried the weight of that day for twenty-five years.

But when I think about September 11, I also remember what Americans did next.

We reached for one another.

Strangers helped strangers.

People opened their homes. They gave blood. They brought food. They searched for the missing. They stood beside grieving families. They asked what they could do, and then they showed up.

In one of our darkest moments, ordinary people reminded us of something extraordinary:

Caring for one another has tremendous power.

That is the America I still believe in.

And twenty-five years later, remembering must mean more than looking backward.

It must also be a pledge about what comes next.

• We pledge that fear will never make us surrender our humanity.

• We pledge to reject political violence, terrorism, hatred, and authoritarianism.

• We pledge to protect the freedom to speak, worship, organize, protest, vote, love, and live without fear.

• We pledge to defend democracy and the rule of law.

• We pledge to stand beside our neighbors when someone tries to turn us against one another because of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, elitism, transphobia, misogynoir, and bigotry.

Because the answer to fear is not more fear.

It is courage.

The answer to hate is not hate.

It is humanity.

The answer to division is community.

That is how we honor those we lost.

Not only with our memories, but with the country we choose to build in their name.

And today, we pledge to keep showing up for one another, protect our freedoms, and leave the next generation a democracy stronger than the one entrusted to us.

We remember. We honor. We pledge.

Hope over fear. Power to the people.

Together, we can champion our rights, freedoms, and democracy, hold our leaders accountable to the people’s will, and inspire voters to make a meaningful difference.

Tell Congress: Disabled Veterans Are Not Budget Bargaining Chips

Congress is still considering the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (TCAVA), H.R. 9237/S. 4744, a package containing more than 60 veterans-related measures.

Many of those provisions have broad support. The major controversy is how Congress proposes to pay for some of them.

Under Section 108, the legislation would use projected savings from changes to VA disability ratings for tinnitus and obstructive sleep apnea to offset the cost of expanding other veterans’ programs and benefits. The Veterans of Foreign Wars says those changes could reduce future disability compensation by approximately $57 billion over 10 years and affect as many as 1.5 million veterans.

That is why the VFW opposes TCAVA as currently written, even though it supports many provisions contained in the legislation.

As VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore explained, “veterans’ benefits are an earned obligation of the nation” and should not be financed through reductions or other offsets that place additional burdens on veterans and their families. The VFW says Congress should fund new veterans programs without using disability compensation for another group of veterans as the offset.

There is a second major concern: what the proposed disability-rating changes would mean for veterans with tinnitus and sleep apnea.

Disabled American Veterans says Section 108 would effectively eliminate the stand-alone disability rating for many future tinnitus claims and significantly reduce compensation for many veterans with sleep apnea who use a CPAP or other treatment device.

The VFW also specifically opposes Section 108, arguing that disability ratings should be based on medical evidence and the effects of service-connected conditions, rather than changed because Congress needs savings to pay for other legislation.

So the disagreement is relatively straightforward:

Veterans organizations largely support many of the benefits contained in TCAVA. They disagree over whether projected reductions in disability compensation for veterans with tinnitus and sleep apnea should be used to help pay for those benefits.

This is a huge win for democracy because millions of Americans should not have their ability to vote put at risk by last-minute federal rules that states cannot realistically implement before Election Day. This is a win for voting rights because powerful groups should have to follow the same ballot-access rules as everyone else, and eligible voters should not face unnecessary new barriers based on unsupported claims about noncitizen voting. Missouri Supreme Court throws out Republican-drawn congressional map — Missouri’s highest court unanimously ruled that the state cannot use a newly drawn congressional map this fall and cleared the way for voters to decide the map’s future through a referendum. This is a win for democracy because politicians should not be able to redraw political power for themselves while shutting voters out of the process. The Washington Post

Reproductive Freedom for All

Lawsuit seeking to revoke access to mifepristone is put on hold — A federal judge paused a lawsuit brought by Texas and Florida seeking to revoke federal approval of mifepristone until at least December 1 or completion of an ongoing federal review. This is a win, even if temporary, because medication abortion remains available while yet another attempt to dramatically restrict access works its way through the courts. Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Federal court dismisses Trump DOJ lawsuit challenging New Jersey’s limits on ICE activity — A federal court dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit seeking to overturn New Jersey restrictions on federal immigration officers’ use of nonpublic state property and resources for civil immigration enforcement. This is a win for immigrant communities because states can set lawful limits on how their own property and resources are used, and the court rejected the federal government’s claim that New Jersey’s policy unlawfully discriminated against federal authorities. Judge blocks Trump’s newest attempt to restrict birthright citizenship — A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against Trump’s latest executive order seeking to deny citizenship to additional children born in the United States, saying the Supreme Court had already established that children covered by the lawsuit are citizens at birth. This is a major win for immigrant families and the 14th Amendment because constitutional citizenship cannot simply be rewritten by presidential decree. Reuters

Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Appeals court keeps lifesaving protections in place for endangered sea turtles — A unanimous federal appeals court upheld requirements that certain shrimp trawlers use turtle-excluder devices that allow captured sea turtles to escape fishing nets. This is a win for our oceans because the protections are expected to save hundreds of endangered and threatened sea turtles every year while proving that commonsense safeguards can allow wildlife and fisheries to coexist. America added 17.1 gigawatts of clean power in just three months — Solar, wind, and battery-storage projects added 17.1 gigawatts of new U.S. capacity during the second quarter of 2026, including the strongest second quarter ever for land-based wind, while the clean-power development pipeline reached a record 205 gigawatts. This is a win for our planet because despite political roadblocks, America’s transition toward renewable energy and storage continues to move forward at enormous scale. Windtech International

Wins for Labor Rights

Baltimore community-college faculty win their first union contract — Faculty members at Baltimore City Community College ratified their first-ever collective bargaining agreement after more than 19 months of organizing and negotiations, with reported gains including salary increases, improved promotion pathways, and stronger job security. This is a win for labor rights because collective bargaining gives educators a real voice over the conditions under which they teach and work. AFL-CIO

RFK Jr. Has No Business Running America’s Health System

The health and safety of the American people are not Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s personal experiment.

Our children are not test subjects. Our scientists are not disposable. Our public-health institutions are not toys for political ideologues to tear apart. And the Secretary of Health and Human Services does not get to make promises to Congress, take power, break those promises, undermine the institutions he was entrusted to lead, and expect the rest of us to look away quietly.

Congress must impeach and remove Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

And here’s the part Congress cannot pretend away:

The articles of impeachment already exist.

On December 10, 2025, Rep. Haley Stevens, joined by Rep. Eric Swalwell, introduced H.Res. 944, formally accusing Kennedy of “abuse of authority and undermining of the public health.” The House Judiciary Committee referred the resolution. 1

Stevens put it plainly when she introduced the resolution:

“Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has turned his back on science, on public health, and on the American people.” 2

She was right to demand accountability then.

What we have learned since makes Congress’s continued inaction even harder to defend.

He told senators his Samoa trip had “nothing to do with vaccines.”

Kennedy was questioned during his 2025 confirmation hearings about a 2019 trip to Samoa, months before a devastating measles outbreak there killed 83 people, most of them young children. Kennedy repeatedly told senators that his purpose for traveling there had “nothing to do with vaccines.” 3

Then reporters found the documents.

In August 2026, the Associated Press and The Guardian obtained correspondence showing that before Kennedy traveled to Samoa, he wrote to the country’s prime minister proposing that his team study what had happened with Samoa’s measles, mumps and rubella vaccines. AP reported that Kennedy’s letter used the words “vaccine” or “vaccination” eight times. 4

Kennedy was not under oath during those confirmation exchanges, and HHS has denied that he lied to Congress. Making a material false statement to Congress can be a crime even when the speaker is not under oath, although such cases are rarely prosecuted. 5

Sen. Ron Wyden responded to the revelations by calling for a criminal investigation.

His warning should ring through every hallway of Congress:

“There are consequences for lying to Congress.” 6

There should be consequences.

There must be consequences.

A cabinet secretary cannot be permitted to give lawmakers one story when seeking confirmation and then move on when documents emerge that contradict that story.

And Samoa is not the only broken promise.

Kennedy secured critical support for his confirmation from Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, a physician and chairman of the Senate health committee. Cassidy said Kennedy made commitments about vaccine policy, including a pledge to maintain the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices “without changes.” 7

Then Kennedy got the job.

On June 9, 2025, HHS announced that it was removing all 17 sitting members of that vaccine advisory committee. That is not an accusation from Kennedy’s opponents. That is what Kennedy’s own department publicly announced. 8

By June 2026, Cassidy had had enough.

“The commitments that were made to me have been violated,” Cassidy told CBS News. 9

And Cassidy issued an even more devastating warning:

“If you build public health upon a foundation of lies,” he said, adequate public health disappears. 10

This is coming from a Republican senator whose vote helped Kennedy get confirmed.

When even the senator who helped put you in office says your promises were broken and trust has been destroyed, Congress has a responsibility to listen.

Then Kennedy began dismantling pieces of America’s vaccine infrastructure.

In August 2025, Kennedy’s own Department of Health and Human Services announced that it was winding down 22 mRNA vaccine-development investments worth nearly $500 million through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, including terminating, restructuring, or canceling projects and solicitations. 11

FactCheck.org subsequently examined Kennedy’s justification for that decision and concluded that he relied on false claims about mRNA vaccines’ effectiveness and safety. 12

And the changes did not stop there.

A Reuters investigation published in July 2026 documented Kennedy’s push to reshape decades of federal vaccine policy, including efforts to reduce the childhood immunization schedule, redirect federal vaccine research, and restrict access to some vaccines. Reuters also reported that a federal judge blocked an effort by RFK Jr. to remove vaccines for six diseases from the universally recommended childhood schedule. 13

This is what power looks like when ideology is allowed to bulldoze expertise.

These are no longer posts on social media.

These are federal policies.

Federal advisory panels.

Federal research dollars.

Federal vaccine recommendations.

And real families have to live in the country those decisions create.

Meanwhile, measles is spreading across America.

According to the CDC’s August 14 update, 2,566 confirmed measles cases had already been reported in the United States in 2026 as of August 13. 14

The same CDC data show that MMR vaccination coverage among U.S. kindergartners fell from 95.2% in the 2019-2020 school year to 92.5% in 2024-2025, leaving an estimated 286,000 kindergartners at risk during that school year. 15

We should be crystal clear about what those numbers do and do not prove.

Kennedy did not single-handedly create America’s declining vaccination rates, and it would be irresponsible to claim that he personally caused every measles outbreak.

But the Secretary of Health and Human Services has one job above all others:

Protect the public’s health.

When a vaccine-preventable disease is spreading, America needs a health secretary who strengthens confidence in evidence-based medicine, protects scientific independence and gives families reliable information.

Instead, we have a secretary whose record has become so alarming that scientists themselves are demanding his removal.

Nearly 700 members of America’s National Academies have backed impeachment.

In early 2026, 687 members of the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering, writing in their individual capacities, endorsed the articles of impeachment. Ten Nobel laureates signed. 16

Their letter cited cuts to lifesaving research, restrictions on vaccines, removal of experts from CDC advisory panels, and misrepresentation of scientific findings among their reasons for supporting impeachment. 17

These are not internet trolls.

These are not anonymous partisan operatives.

These are scientists, physicians, researchers, and some of the country’s most accomplished scientific minds.

And they are sounding the alarm.

Congress needs to stop pretending it cannot hear it.

This is what accountability is for.

Impeachment should never be casual.

But neither should handing someone control over institutions responsible for disease prevention, medical research, vaccines, health insurance, food and drug safety, and the health of hundreds of millions of people.

At some point, oversight without consequences becomes permission.

There comes a moment when another hearing is not enough.

Another sternly worded letter is not enough.

Another senator expressing disappointment is not enough.

Another scientist sounding an alarm is not enough.

The articles have been introduced.

The evidence has grown.

The warnings have multiplied.

Now Congress must act.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. does not own the Department of Health and Human Services.

Donald Trump does not own it.

We do.

These institutions belong to the people they are supposed to serve.

And when an official entrusted with enormous power betrays that trust, Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to hold that official accountable.

We don’t have to accept chaos as governance.

We don’t have to accept conspiracy as public policy.

We don’t have to surrender science to ideology.

And we sure as hell don’t have to quietly watch while the institutions protecting our families are torn apart.

Demand accountability.

Student newspaper wins major First Amendment case against Trump administration. - A federal judge ruled that the government violated constitutional protections by using immigration law to target noncitizen students for protected political speech, handing The Stanford Daily a victory on six of its eight claims. This is a win for freedom over fascism because free speech means little if the government can threaten people with deportation for criticizing those in power, and a free press cannot do its job when journalists fear retaliation for reporting the truth. Reproductive Freedom for All

California sends stronger reproductive-health privacy protections to the governor. - California lawmakers approved AB 1930, which would strengthen the state’s shield protections by requiring certain entities to alert the attorney general before turning over information sought through subpoenas involving legally protected abortion or gender-affirming care. This is a win for reproductive freedom because patients and providers should be able to obtain lawful medical care without fearing that hostile governments will weaponize their private health information against them. Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Eighth federal appeals court rejects mandatory detention without bond. - The Third Circuit ruled that the administration cannot automatically lock up nearly all undocumented immigrants without giving them access to bond hearings, joining seven other federal appeals courts that have rejected the policy. This is a win for immigrant rights because due process requires individual decisions about detention, not a system where people who have lived in their communities for years can be imprisoned indefinitely without a neutral decision-maker hearing their case. Court orders USCIS to restart applications frozen for people from dozens of countries. - A federal judge ordered immigration officials to resume normal processing of covered asylum and immigration-benefit applications that had been placed on hold, certifying a class that includes certain applicants from 39 countries and the Palestinian Authority. This is a win for immigrant and refugee rights because people who followed the legal process should not have their cases indefinitely frozen simply because of where they were born or came from. Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Renewables now generate more than 30% of U.S. electricity- New federal energy data show renewable electricity generation grew 10.9% during the first half of 2026 and supplied 30.2% of U.S. electricity, while wind and solar together generated 58% more electricity than coal. This is a win for our planet because despite political attacks on clean energy, Americans are continuing to build a power system increasingly driven by wind, solar, and other renewable sources. Hawai’i rejects effort to reopen commercial collection of native reef fish. - Hawai’i’s Board of Land and Natural Resources voted against a proposal that would have reopened commercial aquarium-fish collection. Instead, it directed officials to reconsider stronger protections, including a possible statewide prohibition. This is a win for our planet because native reef fish help keep fragile coral ecosystems resilient, support local food systems, and belong in thriving oceans rather than being stripped from reefs for commercial sale. Nearly 4,500 shipyard workers win major raises and stronger job protections. - Union workers at Bath Iron Works in Maine ratified a five-year agreement that includes a 17% wage increase in the first year, followed by 4% annual raises in each of the next four years, while holding health-care costs steady and strengthening protections around outsourcing and emerging technology. This is a win for labor rights because collective bargaining gave thousands of workers the power to secure better pay, greater economic security, and a stronger voice over the future of their jobs. There is no dedicated March participant parking at the Lincoln Memorial.

Limited metered street parking and commercial garages are available in Foggy Bottom and downtown Washington, but availability is not guaranteed.

Traffic, street closures, and event-day restrictions may affect access, so leave plenty of extra time.

Keep Trump’s Ego Off Our Coins and Currency

Friends,

There is a real cost to allowing a sitting president to turn America’s money into government-issued merchandise bearing his own face.

Rather than using America’s 250th anniversary to celebrate the millions of people who built, defended, challenged, and strengthened this democracy, the federal government is minting a monument to the man currently occupying the White House. The front of the coin features Donald Trump’s portrait alongside “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776–2026.”

And apparently one Trump coin was not enough.

A separate 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump has already received final design approval from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.1 The approved design depicts Trump standing behind a desk, and the commission even recommended making the gold coin “as large as possible.” Its denomination, price, and release date have not yet been announced.

Read that again.

A sitting president’s administration is preparing another coin featuring the sitting president, this time in 24-karat gold.

It is not too late to stop the gold coin.

It is not too late to close the loophole.

It is not too late to tell this administration: Our money is not Trump merchandise.

And the coins are only part of it.

The Treasury Department has also announced plans to place Trump’s signature on future U.S. paper currency, making him the first sitting president whose signature would appear on legal tender. The change would remove the Treasurer’s signature from paper money for the first time since 1861.

Respecting democratic norms is essential for a healthy republic, and this situation threatens that foundation.

It is branding the presidency onto public property.

Our currency is a symbol of shared values and democracy, not a tool for personal branding or ego.

America has historically been wary of putting living leaders on its money for a reason, reflecting a tradition of avoiding personal glorification on national currency.

Federal law governing printed currency says that only the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency and securities.

For the 2026 semiquincentennial, however, the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act gave the Treasury secretary authority to issue special $1 coins. That law explicitly prohibits portraits of living people on the reverse of those coins. Trump’s portrait is on the obverse, or front.

That is the loophole Congress must close.

Senators Jeff Merkley and Catherine Cortez Masto introduced the Change Corruption Act, S. 3408, which could not be clearer:

“No United States currency may feature the likeness of a living or sitting President.”

Yet as of now, the bill’s last listed congressional action remains its December 9, 2025 referral to the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. Congress has had months to act, and this delay highlights the need for public pressure.

Enough.

Congress should pass the Change Corruption Act and make unmistakably clear that no sitting president, Republican or Democrat, gets to turn the Treasury and U.S. Mint into a personal branding operation. Congress should also act to stop presidential signatures from being placed on our paper currency and block the still-pending 24-karat gold Trump coin before it is minted and sold.

Presidents are public servants, not royalty.

They do not get to stamp their faces across the money in our pockets and then follow it up with a gold-plated monument to themselves.

Take two minutes to contact your senator and urge them to cosponsor and pass the Change Corruption Act, S. 3408, oppose the gold Trump coin, and keep presidential propaganda off our coins and currency. This direct action empowers you to influence policy.

Friends, this authoritarian surveillance state is getting out of control, threatening our safety, privacy, and freedom. Now is the time to act and demand common-sense solutions.

We were already sounding the alarm about corporations building an AI-powered surveillance infrastructure around us. Now, Flock is advocating for turning vehicles into license-plate scanners, showing how easily this authoritarian surveillance state can grow.

A new investigation has found that Flock pitched a plan that could turn hundreds of thousands of Uber, Lyft, and delivery vehicles into roaming license-plate surveillance machines.1

Think about that. A surveillance network that could follow us wherever we go.

And this danger isn’t theoretical.

Researchers have documented innocent motorists being pulled over, detained at gunpoint, and even jailed after automated license-plate reader errors.2

Then came another disturbing investigation revealing that officers have allegedly used these systems as personal surveillance tools, fueling frustration and a desire for accountability.

Investigators found at least 50 law-enforcement officers charged with or accused of unauthorized license-plate-reader use. In 26 cases, investigators or prosecutors said officers used the technology to spy on wives, girlfriends, ex-partners, their exes’ new partners, or women they wanted to meet. Flock’s system was involved in 46 of the cases reviewed.3

One Georgia police chief allegedly searched license plates belonging to his former girlfriend and her teenage daughter roughly 600 times. In Wisconsin, an officer allegedly used Flock to investigate whether his girlfriend had gone to an abortion clinic.

Another investigation found cases where police departments apparently did not know their own officers had potentially misused these systems until journalists, victims, activists, or other outsiders raised the alarm.4

More than 100 cases of alleged misuse have also been documented, involving accusations ranging from stalking former partners to monitoring protesters and abortion-related travel. 5 And that’s just what we know about.

Flock says misconduct represents only a tiny share of its users and points to auditing tools designed to detect abuse. But when technology can quietly reveal where someone shops, worships, protests, visits a doctor, or spends the night, guardrails after the abuse has occurred are not enough.

America needs affordable healthcare, housing, education, lower costs, and real climate action, not more ways to monitor us. Our tax dollars should build stronger communities, not bigger surveillance networks.

People are fed up with corruption and cruelty. Families are demanding leaders address rising costs, healthcare, housing, education, good-paying jobs, and a planet getting hotter by the minute.

We do not need our public resources helping build an infrastructure capable of tracking ordinary Americans everywhere they go.

For too long, Washington has defined “national security” as weapons, war, militarized enforcement, surveillance, and ever-growing defense budgets.

But a nation is not secure when its people cannot afford to live.

A parent choosing between groceries and medicine is not secure. A senior watching rent, food, and utilities outrun a Social Security check is not secure. A veteran waiting for care is not secure. A worker putting in forty hours and still falling behind is not secure.

And a democracy drowning in corruption, self-dealing, intimidation, and concentrated presidential power is not secure either.

President Trump and Republicans’ proposed 2027 budget exposes these warped priorities. The Trump administration is seeking roughly $1.5 trillion in defense resources while proposing deep cuts to nondefense programs Americans depend on.

The accompanying chart makes the imbalance even clearer: war represents 65.77% of the spending shown, while Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services, Education, and Housing and Urban Development together represent just 18.38%.

Meanwhile, Americans are being squeezed by higher costs, tariffs, healthcare insecurity, housing costs, and policies that threaten programs like Medicaid and food assistance.

This is happening while Trump and his family continue facing extraordinary questions about conflicts of interest and profiting from proximity to presidential power, from cryptocurrency ventures and foreign business relationships to government decisions affecting industries in which the Trump family has financial interests.

We have watched public institutions weakened, watchdogs attacked, loyalists elevated, pardons granted to political allies, independent agencies pressured, and government power increasingly treated as something belonging to one man rather than the American people.

That is not national security. That is concentrated power.

Real national security begins with whether people are safe, free, healthy, housed, fed, represented, and able to build a decent life.

Real National Security Means Security for the People

• 🌎 A safe and livable climate is national security.

• 🚨 Stopping masked immigration agents from terrorizing communities, carrying out unlawful seizures and detentions, or using deadly force without accountability is national security.

• 🌍 Strong alliances and respect for international law are national security.

• 🕊️ Diplomacy, conflict prevention, and peace are national security.

• 🇺🇸 A democracy where no president is above the law is national security.

America absolutely needs the ability to defend itself. But defense cannot become an excuse for pouring unlimited money into weapons and militarization while treating the basic security of the American people as optional.

What exactly are we defending if people cannot afford healthcare, housing, food, education, child care, or retirement?

What are we defending if corruption goes unanswered?

What are we defending if elected leaders can enrich themselves, intimidate watchdogs, weaken democratic institutions, and demand personal loyalty from government officials?

At America’s 250th anniversary, we should choose a different definition of strength.

Invest in people. Lower costs. Protect Social Security and Medicare. Defend healthcare. Build affordable housing. Strengthen public education. Care for veterans. Protect clean air and water. Defend voting rights. Root out corruption. Hold power accountable.

We need to spend our national wealth making Americans stronger, healthier, safer, freer, and more economically secure.

Because the strongest America is not simply the America with the most weapons.

It is the America where democracy works.

Where government serves the public rather than the powerful.

Where every person is treated with dignity.

Where nobody is above the law.

And where ordinary people have the security and opportunity to thrive.

This is a win for democracy because a free press must be able to scrutinize those in power without the threat of government censorship, license retaliation, or forced obedience. ABC News

South Dakota direct democracy restrictions remain blocked - Appeals court judges upheld a lower-court ruling that permanently blocked a law making it harder for citizens to put laws or constitutional changes directly on the ballot. Judge blocks Trump’s abstinence-only overhaul of teen pregnancy prevention program. - A federal judge halted the administration’s attempt to reshape evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention grants around abstinence-only ideology. This is a win for reproductive freedom for all because young people deserve truthful, science-based education that helps them make informed decisions about their bodies and futures. NOTUS

Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Federal court strikes down Trump’s discriminatory 75-country visa ban - A federal court struck down a blanket nationality-based immigrant visa ban affecting people from 75 countries, ordering lawful case-by-case review to resume. This is a win for immigrant and refugee rights because families should not be separated by sweeping discrimination dressed up as policy. Democracy Forward

Appeals court upholds ban on immigration enforcement at some churches - A federal appeals court upheld an injunction limiting immigration enforcement at or near more than 1,400 houses of worship across 33 states and Washington, D.C. This is a win for immigrant and refugee rights because people should be able to worship, gather, and seek community care without fear that sacred spaces will become traps. CT Mirror

Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Court upholds rule designating two forever chemicals as hazardous substances. - A federal appeals court upheld the EPA’s authority to list PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under the Superfund law, strengthening cleanup accountability for toxic PFAS contamination. This is a win for protecting our planet because polluters should pay to clean up the mess they made, not dump the cost onto families, communities, and taxpayers. - NRDC

Wins for Labor Rights

Over 2,000 grocery workers approve new contract - Meat, seafood, and deli workers at more than 60 ShopRite locations across southern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and Delaware voted overwhelmingly to approve a new collective bargaining agreement. This is a win for labor rights because organized workers secured wage gains, protected union health benefits, and expanded leave policies through collective power. UFCW

Too often, conversations about our politics reduce everything to a fight, pitting politician vs. politician, organization vs. organization — even crisis vs. crisis.

Every day, you can turn on your television or radio and hear of wildfires, superstorms, flash floods, and record-breaking heatwaves. Maybe even you have had one of those hit your home town recently.

Every day, you can scroll social media, seeing GoFundMes posted to help a family be able to afford some medical treatment that would otherwise be paid for if they were living in any other industrialized nation. Maybe you know all too well what it is like to be in that situation.

The Sanders Institute was founded on a simple conviction: that a vital democracy requires an informed electorate, civil discourse, and bold ideas. This is one of those bold ideas, and we’d like your name on it.

Senator Ed Markey and Representative Ro Khanna have reintroduced the Green New Deal for Health in Congress. This sweeping legislation would ensure that as we build the clean energy economy of the 21st century, we do not leave behind the clinics, hospitals, and nurses who keep our country healthy.

Here is what the bill does:

● $130 billion over five years to improve and expand community health centers, which are the backbone of primary care for tens of millions of working Americans, and the front door of medicine for communities too often left at the back of the line.

● $100 billion in federal grants to modernize public and nonprofit hospitals for climate resilience, modeled on the Hill-Burton Act, the same program that built America’s rural hospital system in the 1950’s after World War 2. We’ve dramatically expanded public healthcare services before. We can do it again.

● Grant priority to facilities that collectively bargain with their workers, and provide hazard pay for the nurses and aides who show up when the heat dome settles in or the power goes out. The people who care for us and our neighbors deserve a system that respects their essential labor and skills.

● Expand Medicare coverage for solar batteries, heat pumps, and other resilience upgrades for people with disabilities and serious medical needs. For seniors on oxygen and neighbors on ventilators, these upgrades are the difference between staying safe at home and ending up in the ER during a blackout.

● Strengthen transparency and accountability in the medical supply chain, so that the drugs and devices we depend on are not just safe in our bodies, but safe for the planet our bodies depend on.

We Warned You About Russ Vought. Now Impeach Him.

Friends, way back in January 2025 we tried to warn our People Power United readers who Russell Vought was when he was seeking confirmation.1

Before the Senate confirmed Trump’s Project 2025 architect to control the nation’s budget, we warned that Vought wanted to gut the federal government, purge public servants, seize power over money Congress appropriated, weaken independent agencies, and turn the machinery of government into a weapon for Trump’s agenda.

Republicans in the Senate confirmed him anyway.

Now we are seeing the warnings come true.

The Schedule F purge Vought championed? Revived under a new name.

The attack on independent federal agencies? Underway.

The scheme to let the president decide whether to spend money Congress already appropriated? Vought has pushed it from extremist theory toward governing practice.

And now comes one of the ugliest examples yet.

The Trump administration admitted in court filings that it canceled clean-energy grants “based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient’s state.” 2 3Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove says Vought’s Office of Management and Budget selectively terminated or withheld congressionally appropriated Department of Energy grants based on political considerations.4

Translation: Vote against Trump, and your community can be punished with its own tax dollars.

That is not budgeting.

Our taxes should not become Trump’s personal slush fund when they reach Washington.

Congress controls federal appropriations under our constitutional system. A president does not get to reward loyal states and punish disfavored ones. His budget director (Russ Vought) does not get to substitute the president’s political agenda for laws Congress enacts.

This is precisely why impeachment is on the table.

On August 6, Representative Kamlager-Dove introduced two articles of impeachment against Vought: abuse of power through improper impoundment of congressionally appropriated funds and failure to faithfully execute the laws of the United States.5

And she did not mince words:

“We cannot sit idly by while an unelected shadow president continues to weaponize the federal government and steal taxpayers’ hard-earned money.”

Damn right.

Stop Trump From Dismantling Head Start

Friends, Trump and his Republican enablers in Congress are coming for Head Start. We cannot let them get away with it.

For more than 60 years, Head Start has helped children from low-income families enter school with more opportunity, while connecting families with education, health screenings, nutrition, and support. Today, Head Start centers serve roughly 700,000 children across America. (AP News)

Now the Trump administration wants to tear apart the federal standards that help make Head Start Head Start.

The administration’s own Federal Register proposal admits that the existing standards are “the foundation on which programs design and deliver services” for children from low-income families. And then, incredibly, it proposes to “rescind and replace” those standards. (Federal Register)

The proposal would eliminate or loosen requirements governing class sizes, staff-to-child ratios, health and developmental screenings, family engagement, lead-exposure protections and more. The Associated Press reports that the administration wants to erase roughly 1,400 regulations and rely much more heavily on state licensing standards instead. (AP News)

Former Head Start director Khari Garvin said: “This version of Head Start is a shell of the program.” (AP News)

And this attack did not begin today.

In 2025, the Trump administration delayed hundreds of millions of dollars in Head Start funding. The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office concluded plainly: “We conclude that HHS violated the ICA [Impoundment Control Act of 1974.]” GAO found that HHS disbursed more than $825 million less during part of 2025 than during the comparable period in 2024. (GAO)

Enough.

Children are not a line item to slash. Teachers are not “bureaucracy.” Health screenings are not red tape. Helping families escape poverty is not government waste-it’s an investment in our communities.

Head Start is an investment in our children, families, communities, and our future.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, we are preparing to return to Washington with a message that could not be more urgent: the work of democracy, equality, and justice is unfinished, and it is our turn to carry it forward.

On Friday, August 28, 2026, people from across the country will gather at the Lincoln Memorial for the March on Washington: Defend the Vote, centered on three urgent priorities:

Voting Rights. Economic Dignity. Affordability.

We will gather to defend the vote, protect equal opportunity, demand economic dignity, and continue the unfinished work of building an America that lives up to its promise of liberty and justice for all.

Court protects Mississippi’s only majority-Black judicial district - A federal court rejected an effort to stop DeSoto County’s majority-Black judicial subdistrict from being used in November, preserving the county’s only judicial district where Black voters have a meaningful opportunity to elect candidates of their choice. This is a win for freedom over fascism because democracy works only when communities have a fair chance to be heard and attempts to erase representation are challenged and stopped. ACLU

Reproductive Freedom for All

Federal judge blocks Idaho from punishing doctors for health-protecting abortions - A federal judge blocked Idaho officials from enforcing the state’s criminal abortion ban when a physician determines abortion care is necessary to protect a patient’s health or prevent death from self-harm. This is a win for reproductive freedom because patients should not have to deteriorate to the brink of death before doctors are legally allowed to provide the medical care they need. CBS2 Idaho News

Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Appeals court upholds bond-hearing rights for thousands detained by ICE - The First Circuit upheld a ruling finding that the Trump administration was unlawfully denying bond hearings to thousands of people arrested by ICE in New England, becoming the seventh federal appeals court to reject the administration’s detention theory. This is a win for immigrant rights because the government cannot simply lock people away indefinitely without giving them a chance to ask a judge for release while their immigration cases proceed. Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Court forces the Pentagon to restart reviews of more than 100 wind projects - A federal court ordered the Defense Department to end its blanket freeze on wind-energy project reviews, reopening the process for more than 100 proposed projects representing roughly 46,000 megawatts of potential power generation. This is a win for our planet because clean-energy projects deserve lawful, project-by-project review instead of an across-the-board political blockade that keeps renewable power off the grid. Appeals court tosses approval for massive Gulf Coast oil export project - The Fifth Circuit threw out the federal government’s approval analysis for the proposed Texas GulfLink deepwater oil-export project, finding that regulators violated the Deepwater Port Act when approving it within the same application area as another port. This is a win for our planet because massive fossil-fuel infrastructure does not get a free pass around the law, and the ruling could force the developer to halt initial construction while the project’s future is reconsidered. NYC Ferry workers vote to form a union - Sixty-five marine diesel technicians and welders working on New York City’s ferry system voted to form a union with the Transport Workers Union, giving them a collective voice as they head toward negotiations for their first contract. This is a win for labor rights because when workers organize, they gain real power to demand fair wages, stronger benefits, safer workplaces, and dignity on the job. AFL-CIO

Stop ICE From Torturing People With Electric-Shock Gloves

Friends,

Apparently kidnapping people, terrorizing communities, tear-gassing protesters, killing people during enforcement operations, and locking human beings inside filthy detention facilities was not cruel enough. Now ICE wants electric-shock gloves.

Yes. Electric. Shock. Gloves.

ICE is reportedly preparing to spend up to $20 million on gloves capable of delivering painful electrical shocks directly through a person’s skin.1 They can look like ordinary patrol gloves until activated.

When government agents are equipped to inflict electrical pain on human beings to force obedience deliberately, it’s a moral call for all of us to stand against this cruelty and demand action: STOP.

Because look at the record.

The ACLU and numerous others have documented allegations involving masked immigration agents, unmarked vehicles, people being tackled and pinned down, chemical irritants like tear gas, and enforcement actions affecting citizens, children, journalists, protesters, and community observers.2

And let’s not forget, people have been killed during immigration enforcement operations like Alexi Pretti and Renee Nicole Good. Our communities have also been hit with tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, and other weapons, resulting in injuries that include blindness and traumatic brain injury.3 4

Behind detention walls, investigations have documented allegations of medical neglect, overcrowding, inadequate food, filthy toilets and showers, lack of basic hygiene, and people kept in temporary holding facilities beyond ICE’s own extended detention limits. 5 6

And now we are supposed to trust ICE with a weapon that can deliver an electric shock through the touch of a hand? This is a moral issue that demands our immediate attention and action.

Hell no.

This is how cruelty becomes institutionalized under an authoritarian fascist regime: one weapon, one blank check, one excuse at a time.

Congress controls the money. Not one damn taxpayer dollar should be used to put electric-shock weapons into ICE agents’ hands.

Charges dropped after Reflecting Pool damage tied to flawed renovation, not vandalism - Prosecutors moved to drop charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn after court filings said damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool liner was caused by flawed installation during a rushed renovation, not vandalism. This is a win for freedom over fascism because the government should not be able to turn political blame into criminal prosecution when the facts do not support it. The New York Times

Appeals court blocks Trump’s $400 million White House ballroom project - A federal appeals court ordered the administration to stop above-ground construction on a massive White House ballroom project until Congress authorizes it. This is a win for freedom over fascism because public landmarks belong to the people, and even a president cannot bulldoze democratic process to remake national spaces by decree. The New York Times

Pennsylvania is showing America what that could look like. Its House has passed legislation extending the state’s gross-receipts tax to digital advertising revenue. 1

Think about how backward our tax system has become. Depending on the state, a magazine you buy at the store may be subject to sales tax. Yet advertising—the financial engine behind enormous digital platforms—remains exempt from sales taxes in most states. 2

And we’re talking about serious money.

The nonpartisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy estimates that if states modernized their tax codes to include advertising, they could collectively raise roughly $16 billion to $27 billion every year.3 That is money states could invest in schools, roads, healthcare, tax relief, and other community priorities.

Meanwhile, more than half of U.S. advertising dollars now flow through just three enormous companies: Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon.

Sen. Bernie Sanders put the larger principle plainly:

“The wealthiest people in America must start paying their fair share of taxes.”

Exactly.

If Big Tech makes billions selling access to our attention, our data, and our communities, why shouldn’t some of that wealth come back to the communities making those profits possible?

Pennsylvania doesn’t have to be the exception.

It can be the beginning.

Voters spared as Senate recesses without passing SAVE America Act’s voter ID measure. Senate Republicans left for recess without passing a narrowed SAVE America Act voter ID measure that could have made it harder for millions of eligible voters to cast ballots. This is a win for freedom over fascism because blocking last-minute federal barriers helps protect access to the ballot and keeps democracy in the hands of the people. Democracy Docket

Court blocks Trump ban on voter registration help for new citizens. A federal judge pushed back against a policy that tried to shut nonpartisan groups out of citizenship ceremonies and stop them from helping new Americans register to vote. The court found the ban was likely rooted in discrimination, making this a win for immigrant and refugee rights because becoming a citizen should open the door to full participation in our democracy — not place another obstacle in the way. Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Federal court orders Trump administration to stop starving legal services for unaccompanied immigrant children. A federal court ordered the Trump administration to release withheld funding for legal services for unaccompanied immigrant children after months of refusing to comply with earlier court orders. This is a win for immigrant and refugee rights because children should not be forced to navigate deportation proceedings alone, and legal providers should be paid for the mandated work they already delivered. Wins for Reproductive Freedom for All

Michael Bloomberg gives $1.25M to Missouri abortion rights campaign as fundraising gap grows. The campaign opposing a November ballot measure to reinstate Missouri’s abortion ban reported a major new donation, bringing its fundraising to more than $6.5 million. This is a win for reproductive freedom for all because supporters are building the resources needed to defend the voter-approved reproductive-rights amendment and stop another near-total ban. Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Courts rule Trump administration can’t cancel $22B in climate grants. Two court rulings blocked efforts to cancel billions in clean energy and climate justice grants, including funding intended for nonprofit clean-energy financing and community climate projects. This is a win for protecting our planet because court accountability keeps public climate dollars moving toward cleaner power, healthier communities, and environmental justice. Stateline

Wins for Labor Rights

Texas City Ashland plant strike ends with wins and concessions. After 42 days on the picket line, workers at an Ashland Specialty Chemicals plant ratified a three-year contract with gains including more sick leave, more vacation time, short-term disability benefits, and a 9.25% wage increase. This is a win for labor rights because workers used collective power to secure real improvements on pay, benefits, and dignity on the job. Beaumont Enterprise
