Friends, take a moment to look at the United States flag below. Not as a decoration. Not as a prop for politicians. But as a promise — a promise of liberty, justice, dignity, and freedom for all of us.

America is a work in progress and a promise of a better tomorrow for all of us.

At our best, we have shown the world what courage, imagination, and collective purpose can do. We showed up on the beaches of Normandy to defeat Nazis. We sent people to the moon. We helped develop vaccines and helped overcome a worldwide pandemic. Again and again, when the moment demanded courage, the people rose.

We cherish our families, our friends, our faith, and our communities. We pour love, care, grit, and hard work into the places we call home. That flag is not the property of one party, one politician, or one movement. It belongs to all of us. It is a shared promise to keep moving forward, face hard truths, right the wrongs of our past, and build a nation rooted in unity, courage, compassion, and justice.

We are better than our worst days. And we can move past the lies, hatred, and bigotry being spread by Felon President Trump, Republicans in Congress, and MAGA supporters. We will not cower to bullies, cruelty, or fear. We will do the work to fiercely advocate for our rights, freedoms, democracy, and the rule of law. We will push for freedom over fascism and power to the people.

A nation driven by vengeance and hate risks losing its soul. When leaders use policy to punish, divide, and dehumanize, national security weakens, communities fracture, and freedom becomes fragile. History shows us the dark path ahead when fascism takes root. Current examples like Russia and North Korea remind us what happens when power is concentrated, dissent is crushed, and loyalty to one leader replaces loyalty to the people.

These are tough times, but I still believe in us.

The strength of a nation is not found in one president, one party, or one billionaire donor. It is found in people coming together with their unique perspectives, talents, stories, and courage to build something greater than themselves.

If this past year felt like a lifetime worth of setbacks, you are not alone. The goal is to make us afraid, exhausted, and ready to give up. But we cannot let that happen. Now is the time to show up, speak out, protect the people we love, hold leaders accountable, and inspire voters to make a meaningful difference.

In this community, we will always stand against racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, misogyny, sexism, ageism, ableism, sizeism, elitism, transphobia, misogynoir, and all forms of bigotry.

America belongs to all of us. And together, we will keep the promise alive.

Almost 80% of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump.

That statement is not complicated. It is not a trick. It is not a distortion. It is a reminder of something far too many politicians, pundits, and power-hungry extremists want us to forget: America is bigger than one election, one party, one candidate, or one voting bloc.

America is not made up only of registered voters.

America is not made up only of likely voters.

America is not made up only of adults.

America is not made up only of people who had the time, access, transportation, paperwork, language support, physical ability, work schedule, child care, or legal right to cast a ballot.

America is made up of everyone who calls this country home.

That includes our children, who cannot vote but must live with the consequences of every policy decision made in their name. It includes young people who will inherit the climate, the economy, the schools, the courts, and the freedoms we either protect or allow to be stripped away. It includes immigrants who work, build, care, serve, teach, heal, cook, clean, farm, pay taxes, raise families, and strengthen communities. It includes disabled people, elderly people, unhoused people, formerly incarcerated people, people stuck in voter suppression systems, people who were purged from rolls, people who stood in line and still could not vote, and people who have been told over and over again that their voices do not matter.

But their lives matter.

Their dignity matters.

Their safety matters.

Their future matters.

And that is why the math matters.

The United States population is roughly 346 million people. Donald Trump received roughly 77 million votes. When you divide 77 million by 346 million, you get about 22%. That means almost 80% of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump.

Again: almost 80% of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump.

This does not deny the election result. This does not pretend ballots do not count. This does not erase the people who did vote for him. It simply refuses to erase everyone else.

And everyone else is a whole lot of people.

It is the child wondering whether their school will be safe from gun violence. It is the woman wondering whether she will be treated as a full human being or forced to live under someone else’s religious doctrine. It is the senior wondering whether Social Security and Medicare will still be there after a lifetime of work. It is the worker wondering why billionaires get tax breaks while families struggle with rent, groceries, child care, and medical bills. It is the immigrant family wondering whether a knock at the door will tear them apart. It is the veteran wondering why politicians praise service while cutting care. It is the trans kid wondering whether adults in power will protect them or use them as a political target. It is the Black voter, the brown voter, the Indigenous voter, the Asian American voter, the disabled voter, the young voter, and the poor voter watching extremist politicians attack access to the ballot because they cannot win fairly when every voice is heard.

This is why representation matters.

A president does not take an oath to serve only the people who voted for him. A president does not take an oath to serve only wealthy donors, corporate lobbyists, MAGA loyalists, extremist activists, or the loudest voices on television. A president is supposed to serve the whole country.

That means every person.

Not just voters.

Not just adults.

Not just citizens with power.

Not just people who agree with him.

Not just people who can afford a seat at the table.

Every person who calls America home deserves to be treated with dignity and given the opportunity to thrive.

That should not be controversial. That should be the bare minimum in a country that claims to believe in liberty and justice for all.

But this is exactly where Trumpism fails the moral test. Trump and MAGA Republicans do not govern from a place of shared responsibility. They govern by division. They tell people that some families count and others do not. They tell working people to blame immigrants while greedy donors and corporations rig the economy. They tell parents to fear teachers, neighbors to fear neighbors, and communities to fear anyone who looks, prays, loves, speaks, or lives differently. They use cruelty as a campaign strategy and call it strength.

But cruelty is not strength.

Punching down is not leadership.

Threatening people is not patriotism.

And winning an election is not permission to abandon the millions of people who did not choose you.

In a democracy, elections matter. But elections do not erase human rights. Elections do not erase constitutional rights. Elections do not erase the moral obligation to protect the vulnerable, defend freedom, and govern for the common good. No politician gets a blank check to harm people because they won office. No president gets to treat the country like private property. No movement gets to claim “the people” while ignoring nearly 80% of the people who call this nation home.

That is the point.

When we say almost 80% of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump, we are not making a narrow argument about election law. We are making a larger argument about democracy, humanity, and responsibility.

We are saying that children count.

We are saying that immigrants count.

We are saying that nonvoters count.

We are saying that people blocked, burdened, discouraged, or excluded from voting count.

We are saying that people who voted for someone else count.

We are saying that people who oppose Trump’s agenda count.

We are saying that people who are afraid of what comes next count.

We are saying that this country belongs to all of us.

That is the promise MAGA extremists want to shrink. They want an America where rights are treated like rewards. They want freedom for some and control over others. They want working families divided while the rich and powerful cash in. They want us exhausted, distracted, and convinced that the only people who matter are the people who already hold power.

We reject that.

People Power United believes in power to the people because democracy is not supposed to be a gated community for the wealthy, white, privileged, or powerful. Democracy is supposed to be a living promise that every person has worth, every person deserves dignity, and every person should have a real chance to live, work, love, learn, vote, and thrive without fear.

That is why we must keep speaking the truth.

Almost 80% of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump.

So no, Trump does not have a mandate to rule as a dictator. He does not have a mandate to punish his critics. He does not have a mandate to attack immigrants, strip rights, threaten the press, weaponize government, reward billionaires, silence voters, or turn cruelty into policy.

He has a responsibility to serve the whole country.

And we have a responsibility to remind him, Congress, the courts, the media, and one another that America is not just the people who voted for him. America is every child sleeping under this sky. Every worker clocking in before sunrise. Every parent trying to keep food on the table. Every senior who paid into a system that must not be stolen. Every student who deserves truth, not censorship. Every neighbor who deserves safety, not scapegoating. Every family that deserves to stay together. Every person who deserves freedom from fear.

This is our country too.

And we will not let corrupt politicians and greedy donors define “the people” so narrowly that millions disappear from the story.

The people are all of us.

The promise is for all of us.

And the work ahead belongs to all of us.

We will defend our rights. We will protect our freedoms. We will stand for democracy and the rule of law. We will demand a government that serves the many, not the few. And we will keep building a future where every person who calls America home has the dignity, safety, freedom, and opportunity to thrive.

That is what power to the people means.

And we are not backing down.

Pride Month Is a Recommitment to Liberty and Justice for All

Friends,

Pride Month is not just a celebration. It is a recommitment.

At People Power United, we believe equality and equity matter because the promise of America must belong to all of us. Not just the wealthy. Not just the powerful. Not just the people politicians choose to protect. All of us. In a land that claims liberty and justice for all, every person must have the freedom to live openly, safely, and fully.

That includes our LGBTQIA+ siblings, neighbors, friends, family members, coworkers, students, elders, and community leaders. It includes every child who deserves to grow up knowing they are loved. It includes every adult who deserves to live without being targeted by hate, discrimination, or political cruelty. It includes every person, no matter their gender identity, sexual orientation, race, age, income, or zip code.

As we celebrate Pride Month—a time to honor love, authenticity, courage, and the hard-won progress of the LGBTQIA+ community—we must also confront a painful truth: this is a deeply difficult moment for many in our community. Extremists are trying to divide us. They are attacking transgender kids. They are banning books. They are censoring classrooms. They are targeting families, health care, and the freedom to simply exist without fear.

But while this moment is painful, it is not hopeless.

Our history is filled with moments when politicians failed us, courts failed us, and systems failed us—but the people rose up and pushed this country closer to its promise. Every right we cherish was protected because people organized, spoke out, showed up, and refused to surrender their humanity to fear.

So yes, at People Power United, we are committed to staying woke.

And let’s be very clear: “woke” means “to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices.” Don’t let anyone tell you different.

Being woke means refusing to look away when our neighbors are harmed. It means understanding that liberty is not real if it only belongs to some. It means knowing that justice is not justice if it excludes the most vulnerable. It means choosing truth over propaganda, courage over silence, and community over cruelty.

Pride is not just rainbow flags and parades. Pride is a promise. A promise to protect each other. A promise to defend freedom. A promise to build a country where every person can grow, thrive, and be loved without fear.

Friendly reminder: the Equality Act passed the House under Speaker Pelosi’s leadership in 2021, but it ran into the Senate Republican, Sinema, and Manchin wall. If passed into law, the Equality Act would prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity and that is why we cannot stop pushing. Rights do not protect themselves. People protect rights.

This month, we are asking People Power United members to take action in honor of our LGBTQIA+ community:

  A federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration from moving forward with the fund, which critics said could reward political allies and Jan. 6 rioters. It is a meaningful rule-of-law setback to a scheme that watchdogs and bipartisan critics called corrupt. AP

• Federal court blocks Alabama plan for new congressional districts that could help Republicans
  A three-judge federal panel blocked Alabama from using a Republican-backed map for 2026, finding it intentionally discriminated against Black voters. The ruling keeps in place a court-ordered map with two majority or near-majority Black districts. PBS

• Judge says Kennedy Center board broke law putting Trump’s name on building and blocks closure
  A federal judge ruled that Trump’s name was added to the Kennedy Center illegally and ordered it removed from the building and official materials within two weeks. The judge also blocked the planned closure for renovations, saying only Congress has the authority to rename the institution. The Guardian

• Over 300 detainees at Delaney Hall launch hunger and labor strike over conditions
  More than 300 detainees at Newark’s Delaney Hall joined a hunger and labor strike to demand better food, better medical care, and faster immigration proceedings. The Guardian

Labor Wins

• Supreme Court rejects Florida’s bid to sue Western states over truck licenses for immigrants
  The Supreme Court declined Florida’s attempt to challenge California and Washington over policies that let some immigrants obtain commercial driver’s licenses. That leaves those state policies standing and marks a small but notable immigrant-rights and federalism win. NPR

• Uber, Lyft drivers in Massachusetts form first US ride-share union
  Massachusetts drivers for Uber and Lyft formed the first officially recognized ride-share union in the United States, representing nearly 70,000 workers. It is one of the clearest recent labor-rights breakthroughs for gig workers anywhere in the country. WPRI

• US judge tosses Trump administration’s challenge to Boston’s ‘sanctuary’ immigration law
  A federal judge dismissed the administration’s lawsuit against Boston’s Trust Act, ruling the Justice Department lacked legal standing. It is a strong immigration and local-democracy win because the law limiting cooperation with civil immigration enforcement remains in place. WGBH

• Trump administration grants rare TPS reprieve, extending protections for 11,000 Lebanese
  The administration extended Temporary Protected Status for about 11,000 Lebanese nationals, allowing them to keep living and working legally in the United States through November 27, 2026. It is a real immigrant-rights reprieve, even if it happened because DHS missed its deadline. AP

A country should never look at its own currency and see the vanity of a sitting president stamped into the people’s daily life. This week, the Treasury Department announced that Donald Trump’s image will appear on new U.S. paper currency - a $250 bill if Congress grants approval, making him the first sitting president whose image appears on American legal tender. This is in addition to the other change of putting Trumps signature in place of the treasurers, ending a tradition that dates to 1861, with the first new $100 bills expected in June.

That is not a harmless design choice. Money is one of the most public symbols a democracy has. It passes through the hands of workers, parents, retirees, immigrants, and neighbors trying to survive in an economy that already asks too much of ordinary people. Our currency should reflect the shared trust of the nation, not the ego of one man.

• The Treasury should serve the people with neutrality, not serve a president with loyalty.

• Our currency should reflect democratic trust, not presidential vanity.

• The Treasury belongs to the public, not to one president’s ego.

• Public institutions should honor the nation, not flatter the president.

• The Treasury should protect democracy, not promote a president’s brand.

Trump administration officials have also proposed minting a $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump’s image on it to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States next year, a plan that could violate the law.

Trump’s allies want Americans to accept this as patriotic pageantry tied to the 250th anniversary. Treasury officials have framed the change as a way to honor both the country and Trump. But that is exactly the problem. A democracy is not supposed to turn public institutions into personal trophies. The people’s money is not a branding exercise. It is not campaign merch. It is not a monument to a living president’s appetite for attention. If anyone deserves to be honored, it is the people of America, who built this country with their work, sacrifice, struggle, and dreams, not one man’s ego.

America has long understood the danger here. Federal law says “[o]nly the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency and securities,” a rule tied to the country’s effort to distance itself from monarchy. Our money is not supposed to become a shrine to a living ruler.

That is why this moment matters. Members of a bipartisan advisory committee objected to putting a sitting president on currency because it would “break with democratic norms” and “reek of subservience to royalty.” That is the warning in front of us. No free people should be trained to confuse patriotism with personal devotion.

And let’s say the quiet part out loud: when a president starts placing his mark on the people’s symbols, he is not just asking for recognition. Trump and his allies are testing how much public submission the country will tolerate. Today it is a signature or image. Yesterday it was proposals for presidential coinage. Tomorrow it becomes another demand that the country honor the leader instead of the Constitution, the public, and the rule of law. That is not strength. That is democratic erosion dressed up as tribute.

But this is where people power still matters. We do not have to accept the slow rewriting of public life around one man’s image, name, and ego. We can speak up. We can organize. We can remind Congress and Treasury that they answer to the people, not the other way around. Our currency belongs to the people. Our democracy belongs to the people. And the will of the people still matters.

Trump Wants a Ballroom While Families Struggle

At a time when families are being crushed by rent, groceries, medical bills, and rising costs, Donald Trump and his allies want the country debating how much public money should be wrapped around a luxury ballroom project at the White House. That tells us everything we need to know about their priorities.

Trump has claimed the ballroom itself will be privately funded, but Republicans in Congress have proposed up to $1 billion in public funding for security upgrades connected to the project and broader Secret Service needs. The White House says the money is for security, not the ballroom itself, but critics are right to ask why this expensive project is being pushed while working people are told there is never enough money for housing, health care, child care, public schools, Social Security, or disaster relief.

Let’s be clear: this is not just about a building. It is about power. It is about a president who wants monuments to himself while millions of people are expected to sacrifice. It is about a political movement that lectures us about “fiscal responsibility” while finding money for gold gaudiness, spectacle, security theater, cruelty, and self-glorification.

The American people do not need a billionaire vanity project. We need a government that feeds children, protects seniors, funds schools, defends voting rights, lowers drug prices, and keeps people in their homes. We need leaders who understand that public dollars should serve the public good, not the ego of one man.

Even some Republicans have raised concerns about the size of the request, with reporting noting skepticism over the enormous price tag and questions about what the funding would actually cover.1 That should tell Congress something simple: stop rubber-stamping Trump’s wishlist and start listening to the people who pay the bills.

Every dollar spent propping up political extravagance is a dollar not spent strengthening our communities. Every backroom deal that prioritizes Trump’s image over the people’s needs is a betrayal of public trust.

Congress must say no.

No to billion-dollar vanity politics.

No to luxury for the powerful while families struggle.

No to turning the people’s house into a monument to one man’s ego.

Stop the AI War Machine Before It Devours Our Communities

We should be sounding every alarm we have: unchecked AI has no place in weapons and war, and parasitic data centers have no place in our communities.

The same government that tells working families there is never enough money for healthcare, housing, clean water, public schools, or climate action is now racing to build the infrastructure for an AI-powered war machine. The Army has already selected companies to develop massive data centers at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, with Carlyle tied to the Fort Bliss project and CyrusOne tied to the Utah project. These are not small projects. They involve thousands of acres of military land and are connected to the military’s growing appetite for AI power. 1

Let’s be clear about what this means: Wall Street gets land, power, profit, and secrecy. Communities get the risk. Families get the higher utility bills. Local water supplies get drained. And our democracy gets pushed further into the shadows while private equity, Big Tech, and the Pentagon build the backbone for more surveillance, more automation, and more war.

Truthout reported that the Army has entered an exclusive negotiation period for long-term, 50-year leases, with the Army compensated through computing capacity to support “warfighting needs” rather than traditional cash rent.2 The same reporting notes that these commercial data centers may also be allowed to sell excess computing capacity. That is not public accountability. That is a sweetheart setup for private power wrapped in military language.

And people are right to resist. Gallup found that seven in ten Americans oppose AI data centers being built in their local area, including nearly half who strongly oppose them.3 The concerns are obvious: land use, electricity demand, water use, pollution, quality of life, and who gets stuck paying the bill?

The environmental threat is severe. In Utah, The Guardian reported that a proposed AI data center footprint could cover more than 40,000 acres, require more power than the entire state currently uses, and draw major water resources in a drought-stressed region.4 This is not “innovation.” This is extraction.

And when this infrastructure is tied to AI warfare, the danger grows even darker. Military AI raises profound questions about who is accountable when machines accelerate surveillance, targeting, and life-or-death decisions. These systems can fail and diffuse accountability when a machine, rather than a person, is making decisions over life and death.

We cannot let corporations and the Pentagon turn our communities into sacrifice zones. Our water is not a bargaining chip. Our electric bills are not Wall Street’s piggy bank. Our public land is not a playground for private equity. And our future must not be handed over to an AI war machine.

Take action now: send a message to your member of Congress and demand accountability for Pentagon AI data centers. Then sign the petition to block the data center utility mega-merger. We need lawmakers, regulators, and local officials to hear us loud and clear: no 50-year giveaways, no unchecked AI weapons pipeline, no corporate utility power grab, and no backroom deals that force communities to pay the price.

People power means we do not surrender our land, water, air, bills, or democracy to billionaires, war profiteers, and private equity. Not now. Not ever.

I would like to wish you a safe and impactful Memorial Day weekend!

The promise of America was never supposed to belong only to the wealthy, white, privileged, or powerful.

It was never supposed to mean liberty for billionaires, justice for the connected, and crumbs for everyone else. Liberty and justice for all means all of us.

But Trump and MAGA Republicans are working every day to shrink that promise. They want an America where billionaires rule, history is whitewashed, cruelty is branded as patriotism, and rights are treated like rewards for the people they approve of.

We cannot let them have it.

For generations, people have had to organize for the rights this country claimed were already guaranteed. Black communities advocated for freedom and the vote. Women rallied for equality and bodily autonomy. Indigenous communities organized to survive genocide, theft, and erasure. Immigrants, workers, LGBTQIA+ people, disabled people, poor people, young people, and elders have all had to demand dignity from systems built to deny it.

That truth is not a weakness. That truth is the work.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we face a defining choice: allow extremists to drag this country backward, or rise together and demand a future where rights, freedoms, safety, opportunity, and dignity belong to every person who calls this country home.

Freedom for only a few is not freedom.
Justice for only the powerful is not justice.
Democracy for only the wealthy is not democracy.

That is why we are showing up.

America, our freedoms are under attack

America, our freedoms are under attack.

Extremist white Christian nationalists are trying to drag this country backward into a government where one narrow religious ideology controls our laws, our classrooms, our bodies, our families, and our futures. They want to erase the wall between church and state and replace democracy with domination. They dress up cruelty as faith, call oppression “freedom,” and pretend their hunger for power is somehow ordained.

“White Christian nationalists believe the US was founded as a Christian nation, although the Constitution never mentions God and enshrines the separation of church and state. Its adherents twist biblical language to justify violence, sexism and hostility toward people of color.” ¹

They cloak cruelty in religion. However, the Constitution—the true foundation of this country—explicitly separates church and state.

But let’s be clear: the Constitution is the foundation of this country—not any one religious doctrine. America was not built to be a theocracy. Our government belongs to the people, not pastors, billionaires, extremists, or politicians who want to weaponize religion to control the rest of us.

Their agenda is not subtle. They want to force people to give birth. Tell us who we can love. Stop us from voting. Ban the books we read. Price-gouge our families. Flood our communities with guns and then call the violence “freedom.” Cut Social Security and Medicare. Criminalize poverty, homelessness, and immigration. Expand surveillance and repression. Pollute our air and water for profit. Prioritize weapons of war over healthcare, housing, education, and human dignity. And then they want to shield corrupt leaders, extremists in power, and a compromised Supreme Court from accountability.

This is not faith. This is control. A fascist authoritarian state being built here in America.

Much of this agenda is spelled out in Project 2025, a radical blueprint backed by far-right extremists and embraced by Trump’s movement and Republican allies in Congress. Its purpose is clear: consolidate power, weaken checks and balances, strip protections from vulnerable communities, and move this country closer to authoritarian rule wrapped in religious language.

We are already seeing the warning signs: attacks on transgender people, assaults on LGBTQIA+ rights, efforts to erase diversity, equity, and inclusion, threats to reproductive freedom, attacks on public education, attempts to rewrite civil rights protections, and a growing push to define family, marriage, gender, citizenship, and freedom through one extremist political-religious lens.

This is not democracy. It is domination.

And let’s not forget: Donald Trump may have come back into power, but nearly 80% of us who call America home did not vote for him.2 He does not speak for the majority. He never has.

The people of this country are far more powerful than a handful of extremists propped up by billionaire donors and a compromised Supreme Court.

The rise of white Christian nationalism is dangerous—but it is not unstoppable.

We can resist. We must resist.

We’re building a people-powered movement—fueled by truth, love, and a fierce commitment to liberty and justice for all. One that advocates for liberty and justice for all, economic fairness, abortion access, racial equity, LGBTQIA+ rights, environmental protection, and the freedom to live and love without fear.

In this community, we refuse to stay silent in the face of hate. We will speak out, show up, and stand together to protect one another and defend the future we deserve.

This is our country. And we will not back down.

We are building a people-powered movement to elect leaders who represent our will, not religious extremists or corrupt billionaires.

Banned in War, Unleashed on the People

Tear gas is not “crowd control.” It is chemical force. It is dangerous enough that several countries and the Chemical Weapons Convention prohibits the use of riot-control agents, including tear gas, as a method of warfare, yet the same chemicals are being used by ICE and domestic law enforcement.1 That double standard should outrage every person who believes in freedom: too dangerous for war, but somehow acceptable against protesters, journalists, neighborhoods, and detained immigrants.

Tear gas does not “restore order.” It burns eyes, chokes lungs, irritates skin, and can cause coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting. The CDC warns that prolonged exposure or large doses can cause severe harm, including blindness, glaucoma, respiratory failure, and even death, with greater danger in closed indoor spaces where people cannot escape.2

And now, new reporting shows this crisis reaches inside America’s immigration detention system. The Washington Post reported that internal ICE records revealed at least 780 incidents in which staff used physical force or chemical agents to control immigrant detainees during the first year of Trump’s second term, including guards firing chemical pepper balls into a communal room in Alaska and using pepper spray on detainees in Georgia who said they had not been seen by medical staff.3

This is not safety. This is state violence. In Portland, a federal judge restricted federal officers’ use of tear gas at protests outside an ICE facility after evidence showed peaceful protesters and journalists being sprayed, gassed, and hit with munitions. The court described DHS officers spraying peaceful protesters in the face and firing tear gas and pepper-ball munitions into crowds of peaceful and nonviolent protesters.4

A free people cannot be gassed into silence. Protest is not a crime. Demanding food, water, medical care, dignity, and justice is not violence. We need a nationwide ban on the use of tear gas and chemical crowd-control agents against civilians, protesters, journalists, and people in detention. A democracy cannot survive if dissent is treated like an enemy force. And a government that uses chemical agents against the people is not protecting order—it is exposing its fear of people power.

We must demand a nationwide ban on the use of tear gas against our civilians. Protecting public safety means ensuring the right to gather, speak out, and petition for change without fear of chemical attack. A free people cannot be gassed into silence. Proper security lies in justice, not in repression.

Pete Hegseth must be removed from power before he causes even more devastation at home and abroad. This is not a close call. This is not a partisan game. This is a moral, constitutional, and democratic emergency.

When Hegseth declared “No quarter, no mercy for our enemies” while giving an update on Donald Trump’s illegal war on Iran, he was not speaking the language of lawful restraint or responsible leadership. He was speaking the language of brutality. He was signaling a worldview in which cruelty is strength, vengeance is policy, and the rules of war are disposable. If those words are followed as orders, they amount to war crimes. No defense secretary who talks like that should remain in office for one more day.

And that is only the beginning.

Hegseth has reportedly sought to purge the U.S. military of Black and female officers, turning one of the nation’s most powerful institutions into a playground for ideological cleansing and grievance politics. That is not leadership. That is an assault on equality, professionalism, and the basic principle that service and merit matter more than bigotry. Our military belongs to the people of this country, not to a culture war agenda built on resentment and exclusion.

He has also overseen operations tied to horrifying civilian deaths, including 168 students at an Iranian girls’ school. Let that sink in. Children. Girls in a school. Young lives that should have been protected, not incinerated in the name of reckless militarism. When leaders treat civilian casualties like background noise, democracy rots and human dignity is shredded. When they speak with open contempt for mercy, they tell the world exactly who they are.

And while innocent people die, U.S. servicemembers are put in danger too. Hegseth’s actions and rhetoric do not make anyone safer. They make catastrophe more likely. They inflame conflict, raise the risk of retaliation, and place troops in the path of consequences created by arrogance at the top. That is not patriotism. That is reckless endangerment dressed up as toughness.

Now Rep. Yassamin Ansari has introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth, and Congress must meet this moment with courage. Pass the articles. Hold the hearings. Expose the truth. Remove him.

Because impeachment is not just about punishing one man. It is about defending the idea that public power has limits. It is about making clear that no Pentagon chief can wage unlawful war, glorify cruelty, target officers for who they are, endanger troops, and escape accountability. It is about telling every future authoritarian that the Constitution is not optional and that the people are still watching.

If Congress refuses to act, it sends a terrifying message: that war without restraint, discrimination without shame, and abuse without consequence are all acceptable so long as the right strongman is in charge.

We cannot accept that. We cannot normalize it. We cannot wait for more bodies, more grief, and more damage to our democracy.

This is the moment to raise our voices. This is the moment to demand accountability. This is the moment to advocate for Congress to choose between cowardice and the Constitution.

Pete Hegseth has shown this country who he is. Believe him. And then remove him.

The Constitution Says “We the People,” Not “I, the President”

Friends,

America was not founded to be ruled by one man. Our Constitution does not begin with “I, the President.” It begins with “We the People” because power in this country is supposed to belong to the people, not to one politician, one party, one billionaire class, or one authoritarian movement.

That is why Congress must stop treating Donald Trump’s presidential power grab like politics as usual.

At the center of this crisis is the dangerous idea known as unitary executive theory. Its most extreme supporters argue that the president should have sweeping control over the executive branch, including agencies Congress created to operate with independence. Trump’s own White House order declared “Presidential supervision and control of the entire executive branch,” including independent agencies.1

This is not a technical debate. This is a democracy alarm bell.

When a president claims the power to control agencies, fire independent officials, replace experts with loyalists, and bend law enforcement toward personal or political goals, the presidency stops looking like public service and starts looking like a throne. The Trump administration has also moved to strip civil service protections from federal workers under a revived Schedule F-style framework, a move critics warn could politicize the federal workforce and make it easier to replace experts with loyalists.2

And the danger is no longer theoretical.

This is exactly why unchecked presidential power is so dangerous. When one man can send the United States military to seize another country’s leader and his wife, as Trump did with Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores in Venezuela, without real congressional accountability, we are no longer talking about ordinary foreign policy.3 We are talking about a president acting like the Constitution is optional.

When one man can authorize or defend boat strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific that have reportedly killed 193 people across at least 58 attacks, and only afterward face an inspector general inquiry into whether proper procedures were followed, that is not accountability.4 That is power moving first and oversight arriving too late.

And when one man can drag this country toward war, launch attacks tied to Iran without Congress first authorizing war, and force lawmakers to scramble afterward to reassert their constitutional authority, that is not strength. That is a presidential power grab.

The Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war for a reason. No president should be allowed to bomb, kill, capture foreign leaders, or push America into war while Congress shrugs, hides, delays, or rubber-stamps after the fact.

The corruption concerns are just as alarming. Trump and his family are tied to World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture that has raised serious conflict-of-interest questions while Trump holds presidential power. Reuters has reported that the Trump family’s crypto venture overlaps with major crypto industry networks and that Trump’s presidency, crypto advocacy, business interests, and regulatory shifts have raised concerns about conflicts of interest.5

Now the danger has reached a new level. The Justice Department approved a settlement that, according to MS Now, permanently bars the IRS from auditing Trump, his family, and his companies for tax claims filed before the settlement date.6 The agreement is tied to Trump dropping his lawsuit over the leak of his tax returns and includes the creation of a nearly $1.8 billion fund for people claiming harm from political “weaponization.”

Let’s call this what it is: a five-alarm warning for democracy. No president should be allowed to seize foreign leaders, bomb boats, kill people, move toward war without Congress, profit through private crypto ventures, weaponize the Justice Department against political enemies, and then benefit from a settlement that blocks tax accountability for himself, his family, and his companies.

That is not public service. That is not law and order. That is what happens when presidential power is allowed to swallow checks and balances whole.

Congress cannot abdicate its power to the president. Congress cannot surrender oversight. Congress cannot allow any president to turn independent agencies into loyalty machines, the Justice Department into a political weapon, the military into a private tool of force, or public office into a family business.

We need Congress to publicly reject unitary executive theory, investigate extremist agendas like Project 2025, protect independent agencies and civil servants, defend inspectors general and whistleblowers, and reassert its constitutional authority over war, spending, oversight, and accountability.

The Constitution does not belong to Donald Trump. It does not belong to MAGA Republicans. It does not belong to billionaires, loyalists, or political insiders.

It belongs to us.

Congress must do its job. Hold presidents accountable. Defend checks and balances. Protect our rights, freedoms, rule of law, and democracy before this presidential power grab becomes the new normal.

Stop the $70 Billion ICE Power Grab

There is no mystery about what this ICE funding bill currently in Congress is. It is not about public safety. It is not about affordability. It is not about solving a crisis. It is a slush fund for ICE and Border Patrol, wrapped in fear, rushed through Congress, and designed to hand Donald Trump’s deportation machine another blank check.

Congress is being asked to pour roughly $70 billion more into ICE and CBP through a partisan funding package, even after those agencies received massive funding last year. Senate Budget Committee Democrats say ICE and CBP were still sitting on more than $103 billion in unobligated funding as of March 2026.1

So let’s be clear: there is no funding emergency. There is only a cruelty agenda looking for more cash.

Families are struggling with groceries, gas, rent, healthcare, childcare, and prescription drugs. People are asking Washington to lower costs and protect communities. Instead, Republicans are trying to hand billions more to agencies already swollen with unspent money. Worse, this package was tied to a $1 billion White House security proposal connected to Trump’s ballroom project, which the Senate parliamentarian ruled could not be included in the fast-track bill. 2

That tells us everything we need to know. Working families are told to tighten their belts. Seniors are told programs cost too much. Disabled people are told there is no money. Families on Medicaid are told they must wait, prove, struggle, and suffer. But when Trump wants billions for ICE, Border Patrol, and a palace-like ballroom project, suddenly the money appears.

That is not governing. That is looting.

And every lawmaker who votes for this owns what comes next. Every raid. Every wrongful detention. Every child who comes home to an empty house. Every parent disappeared into a detention system. Every community terrorized by masked agents. Every taxpayer dollar sent into a system with too little transparency and too little accountability. This vote is not symbolic. It is the legislative rubber stamp for what follows.

The public is not confused. A UMass Amherst poll found only 33% of Americans approved of how ICE is doing its job, while 59% disapproved.3 Half of respondents also believed ICE officers are not adequately trained for immigration enforcement. That is not a mandate for more money. That is a warning siren.

This bill also makes life more expensive. FWD.us found Trump’s immigration policies could raise costs for the average American family by $2,150 per year, and projected grocery bills could rise from $165 to $195 per week within four years.4 Mass deportation is not just morally cruel. It destabilizes construction, agriculture, food service, caregiving, and local economies. It rips workers out of communities and then forces everyone else to pay more.

Republicans cannot claim they care about affordability while funding policies that raise prices. They cannot claim they care about families while financing family separation. They cannot claim they care about public safety while writing blank checks to agencies facing deep public distrust.

Congress must reject this bill.

Not one more dollar for raids while families cannot afford groceries. Not one more dollar for detention expansion while people lose healthcare. Not one more dollar for political theater while communities live under fear. Not one more dollar for a deportation machine that already has more than enough money to do harm.

Stop ICE’s slush fund. Stop the blank check. Stop funding cruelty in our name.

  WNBA players unanimously approved a seven-year collective bargaining agreement that the union called transformational. The deal expands economic gains and player benefits and stands out as one of the biggest labor wins in women’s sports. AP

Immigrant and Refugee Wins

• US judge blocks Trump from ending protections for 2,800 Yemeni nationals
  A federal judge stopped the administration from ending Temporary Protected Status for Yemenis, preserving work authorization and protection from deportation for now. The judge said DHS failed to follow the legal process Congress requires for reviewing TPS decisions. Reuters

• Second federal appeals court rejects Trump’s no-bond immigration detentions, deepening circuit split
  The 11th Circuit became the second federal appeals court to reject the administration’s attempt to deny bond hearings to many immigrants already living in the United States. The ruling strengthens due-process protections and increases the odds that the Supreme Court will eventually have to settle the issue. AP

  A Washington Post report tells the story of 12-year-old Anatolii Prokhorenko, who snapped the fiber-optic tether of a Russian drone as it moved toward children near his home in Ukraine’s Chernihiv region. Washington Post

• Federal court rules against new global tariffs Trump imposed
  A federal trade court struck down Trump’s new 10% global tariffs, saying he exceeded the authority Congress gave him and calling the tariffs “invalid” and “unauthorized by law.” It is a clear rule-of-law story because the court reasserted that presidents cannot simply invent sweeping tariff powers on their own. AP

We are at one of those moments when silence becomes surrender. After the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act, Southern legislatures moved quickly to redraw maps that dilute Black political power and weaken fair representation.

The civil rights heroes who marched, organized, bled, and refused to bow down did not sacrifice so politicians could rig maps in back rooms and call it democracy. They did not cross bridges, face violence, and demand the ballot just so a new generation of power-hungry extremists could slice up communities and silence Black voters with the stroke of a pen.

This is the new Jim Crow: cleaner paperwork, polished speeches, and district lines designed to do what poll taxes and literacy tests once did — weaken the power of the people.

But the people are not powerless.

On Saturday, May 16, civil rights leaders, voting rights organizers, faith leaders, and people from across the country are gathering in Alabama and around the country for Rapid Response events for the All Roads Lead to the South National Day of Action, beginning with remembrance at the Edmund Pettus Bridge and continuing with a rally in Montgomery.

That bridge is not just a landmark. It is a challenge. It asks us whether we will honor history by watching it be undone, or by stepping forward with courage.

This is the time for some good trouble. This is the time to show up, speak out, and make it plain: Black political power must be protected. Voting rights must be defended. Fair representation must belong to the people, not politicians who cannot win without cheating the system.

MAGA and white nationalists want to drag us backward. We are not going back.

Donald Trump is once again trying to turn public office into private profit. Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury Department over the leak of his tax records, putting him in the extraordinary position of pursuing money from agencies inside the very government he leads. AP reported that the case raises serious legal and ethical concerns because Trump is both the head of the executive branch and a private plaintiff seeking a massive payout. 1

Let’s be clear: taxpayers should not bankroll Trump’s personal grievances. Reuters reported that Trump and the IRS have been in talks to settle the lawsuit, and any payout would likely involve taxpayer money.2 That means public funds that should serve working families could instead be redirected toward a man who has spent years treating government like a weapon, a shield, and a cash register.

Now the danger is even bigger. ABC News reported that Trump is expected to drop the $10 billion IRS lawsuit in exchange for the creation of a $1.7 billion “weaponization” compensation fund for allies who claim they were targeted by the Biden administration. ABC also reported that the proposed fund could operate with limited oversight, and that Trump would have authority to remove members of the commission running it.3

That is not justice. That is a taxpayer-funded loyalty program.

While families struggle with rent, groceries, health care, child care, and prescription drugs, Trump and his allies are maneuvering to create a pipeline of public money for political grievances. Working people are told there is never enough money for housing, schools, disaster relief, veterans, seniors, or health care. But somehow, when Trump and his allies want a payout, the vault suddenly opens.

This is how corruption spreads: first as a lawsuit, then as a settlement, then as a slush fund, then as a precedent. If a president can pressure the government he controls into rewarding himself, his family, his businesses, or his political allies, then the rule of law becomes a joke.

Congress must step in. Lawmakers must block any taxpayer-funded payout, investigate the negotiations, demand full transparency, and stop Trump from turning the Treasury into a personal and political piggy bank.

Power to the people means no one is above the law—not billionaires, not presidents, not Trump.

Ban Partisan Gerrymandering Now

When politicians cannot win on their policies, their leadership, or their record, they often reach for the oldest trick in the anti-democracy playbook: rig the system.

That is what partisan gerrymandering does. It allows politicians to draw maps that protect their own power, silence entire communities, and make elections less about the will of the people and more about the survival of the powerful. It turns democracy upside down. Instead of voters choosing their representatives, politicians choose which voters count.

And when voices are silenced, people get hurt.

When communities are carved apart for political gain, families lose power over the decisions that shape their lives. Schools get ignored. Hospitals close. Wages stay low. Housing becomes more unaffordable. Voting rights are weakened. Civil rights are attacked. Public dollars flow toward wealthy donors and political insiders while working people are told to wait, struggle, and accept less.

That is not an accident. That is the point.

Gerrymandering allows politicians to dodge accountability. It gives extremists a shield. It lets them push unpopular policies, attack our rights, and ignore the needs of the people because they know the map has been drawn to protect them. They do not have to earn trust. They do not have to listen. They do not have to lead. They only have to manipulate the rules.

That is not leadership. That is cheating.

A healthy democracy requires fair maps, fair elections, and fair representation. Every community deserves a voice. Every voter deserves equal power. No party should be allowed to slice and divide neighborhoods to silence voters they fear. No politician should be able to cling to office by weakening the people’s ability to remove them.

This is about more than district lines. This is about whether democracy belongs to the people or to politicians who are afraid of the people.

We need Congress to ban partisan gerrymandering now. We need enforceable national standards that protect fair representation, stop map manipulation, and make sure every vote has equal power.

Power to the people means our voices must not be erased.

Power to the people means politicians should win by serving the people, not by rigging the map.

On this special day when we honor Mothers and all those who fill that role, let us continue to honor them with our words and our actions.

Protect Mothers. Protect Children. Protect Families.

Happy Mother’s Day weekend to every mother, grandmother, auntie, caregiver, teacher, neighbor, mentor, and loved one who nurtures, protects, guides, and loves in that sacred role.

But honoring mothers must be more than flowers, cards, brunches, and speeches. Honoring mothers means protecting the children they love. Honoring mothers means defending the families they hold together. Honoring mothers means refusing to let politicians praise motherhood with one breath while using the power of the state to harm children, punish families, and abandon the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Our children are our future. They are the real gift. And if we truly believe that, then we must say plainly what is happening: children and families are under attack from the highest levels of power in this country.

This is not just “budget policy.” This is not normal political disagreement. When leaders cut health care, slash food assistance, freeze school funding, threaten immigrant families, and deny children the resources they need to survive and thrive, that is violence. It is violence by paperwork. Violence by budget line. Violence by cruelty dressed up as policy.

Mother’s Day itself has roots in protest, public health, and care work. In 1858, Ann Reeves Jarvis organized “Mother’s Work Days” to improve sanitation and help prevent deaths from disease and polluted water.1 Mother’s Day was connected to the labor of women who refused to accept preventable suffering as normal.

That is the spirit we must reclaim now.

The Trump administration and MAGA Republicans have pushed policies that threaten the health, safety, dignity, and stability of millions of mothers and families. Medicaid and CHIP are lifelines for children, pregnant people, disabled people, seniors, and low-income families. Yet the 2025 reconciliation law cuts $990 billion from federal Medicaid and CHIP spending over ten years, with estimates showing 7.5 million people becoming uninsured because of those cuts by 2034.2

That means children missing checkups. Mothers delaying care. Families skipping prescriptions. Disabled children losing services. Communities forced to absorb the pain of political choices made by people who will never have to choose between rent, groceries, and medicine.

Trump and MAGA Republicans are attacking food security, too. SNAP is one of the most basic promises a country can make: children should not go hungry because their families are poor. Yet new restrictions are expected to reduce SNAP participation by roughly 2.4 million people in an average month and reduce child nutrition support for tens of thousands of children. 3

Let us be clear: legislative hunger is violence. A mother skipping dinner so her child can eat is not a personal failure. It is a policy failure. It is a moral failure.

Trump and MAGA Republicans also froze about $6.8 billion in congressionally approved K-12 education funding, threatening support for migrant students, English-language learners, teacher training, academic enrichment, and after-school and summer programs.4 They withheld Head Start funds, with about $825 million less disbursed in early 2025 compared with the year before.5 These are not luxuries. These are programs children and working families rely on.

They have also spread fear into schools, hospitals, churches, and neighborhoods by weakening protections against immigration arrests in sensitive locations. A Guardian analysis found that during the first seven months of 2025, the Trump administration arrested parents of at least 27,000 children, including parents of at least 12,000 U.S. citizen children.6

That is family separation. That is trauma. That is children wondering if their mother or father will come home.

We all deserve to live in communities free from violence.

That includes mothers.

That includes children.

That includes immigrant families, poor families, disabled children, and every family struggling to survive policies designed to punish them.

So yes, celebrate mothers. Honor mothers. Love mothers. Remember mothers. But do not stop there.

Honor mothers by defending Medicaid. Honor mothers by protecting SNAP. Honor mothers by funding schools. Honor mothers by protecting Head Start. Honor mothers by demanding safe communities, reproductive freedom, paid leave, affordable housing, child care, clean water, and health care for every family.

Care is not weakness. Care is power.

This Mother’s Day, let us honor mothers with more than words. Let us honor them with action.

Honoring moms means stop harming our children and families.

The violence must end. The cruelty must end. The abandonment must end.

Our children deserve care. Our families deserve dignity. Our communities deserve safety. And mothers deserve more than flowers. They deserve a country that stops hurting the people they love.

The promise of America belongs to all of us, not just the wealthy, white, privileged, or powerful.

Friends,

The promise of America was never meant to be locked behind the gates of wealth, whiteness, privilege, or power. Liberty and justice for all was not a promise of liberty only for billionaires, justice for the connected, and crumbs for everyone else. The promise of liberty and justice for all is big enough to hold every person who calls this country home.

But Trump and MAGA Republicans want to shrink that promise. They want an America where the wealthy rule, where whitewashed history replaces truth, where cruelty is called patriotism, and where rights are treated like rewards for the people they approve of. They want us divided, afraid, exhausted, and silent.

We cannot let them have it.

For generations, people have been forced to advocate for the rights this country claimed were already guaranteed. Black communities advocated for freedom and the vote. Women advocated for equality and bodily autonomy. Indigenous communities advocated to survive genocide, theft, and erasure. Immigrants, workers, LGBTQIA+ people, disabled people, poor people, young people, and elders have all had to demand dignity from a system too often designed to deny it.

That truth is not a weakness. That truth is the work.

America’s history is not perfect, but our future can be more just if we have the courage to tell the truth and the power to act on it. We do not honor the Declaration of Independence by pretending its promise was fulfilled in 1776. We honor it by finishing the work that was left undone. We honor it by refusing to let extremists turn democracy into a playground for billionaires and a weapon against everyone else.

Freedom for only a few is not freedom.

Justice for only the powerful is not justice.

Democracy for only the wealthy is not democracy.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we are standing at a crossroads that will define us. We can allow a white supremacist faction, led by 34-time convicted felon President Donald Trump—not a leader—and complicit MAGA Republicans, who are the laziest, most corrupt Congress, to drag this country backward, whitewash our history, and hoard the promise of America for wealthy white men like Trump. Or we can rise up and demand a nation where rights, freedoms, opportunity, safety, and dignity belong to all of us.

This is not the moment to look away. This is the moment to speak out, show up, and build a country where everyone can thrive, with liberty and justice for all of us.
