This is what accountability looks like when people refuse to stay quiet.

House Democrats have now introduced six articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth, saying he has “demonstrated a willful disregard for the Constitution.” 1 Good. They are right to name it. They are right to act. And they are right to put this fight where it belongs: in public view, under pressure, with the people watching.

Because let’s be honest about what this is.

Pete Hegseth is not just another reckless appointee. He is what happens when authoritarian power puts loyalty above law, cruelty above conscience, and ego above democracy. From the beginning, here at People Power United we said the United States military deserves leadership grounded in integrity, competence, restraint, and fidelity to the Constitution.2 Not ideological fanaticism. Not macho performance. Not grievance politics dressed up as patriotism.

Trump put Hegseth at the top of the Pentagon for one reason: obedience. Not wisdom. Not experience. Not steadiness. Obedience.

And now the country is living with the consequences.

First, Hegseth should be impeached for helping wage war without Congress. The impeachment resolution accuses him of helping initiate and escalate hostilities against Iran without a declaration of war or specific authorization from Congress, and for failing to seek meaningful consultation with the very body the Constitution empowers to decide questions of war. That is not a minor procedural dispute. That is a constitutional line being crossed in broad daylight.

The power to declare war does not belong to Donald Trump. It does not belong to Pete Hegseth. It does not belong to any swaggering strongman who thinks the Constitution is a speed bump on the road to more violence. That power belongs to Congress because the framers knew war is too grave, too deadly, and too dangerous to be left in the hands of men hungry for power and applause.

When a defense secretary helps bypass Congress and ignores the Constitution, he is not protecting democracy. He is helping to dismantle it.

Second, Hegseth should be impeached for reckless disregard for civilian life and the laws of war. The impeachment articles accuse him of authorizing, condoning, or failing to prevent military force that caused large civilian casualties, including the strike on a girls’ school in Minab. Investigators reportedly believed American forces were likely responsible.3 Outdated targeting intelligence may have played a role. Senators later pointed to Hegseth’s own words, including “no stupid rules of engagement” and “death and destruction from the sky all day long,” as evidence of a mindset that treats restraint like weakness and civilian protection like an inconvenience.

Let’s be crystal clear.

Civilian safeguards are not weakness. The laws of war are not optional. Dead children are not collateral messaging problems. Shattered families are not footnotes. When the person running the Pentagon talks like mercy is foolish and destruction is strength, innocent people pay first and the truth gets buried second. Don’t even get me started on Hegseth quoting Pulp Fiction and acting like it was a Bible verse.4

That is not leadership. That is moral failure armed with state power.

Third, Hegseth should be impeached for abusing power and betraying public trust. The impeachment articles accuse him of gross negligence in handling sensitive military information through unsecured communications, obstructing congressional oversight, and politicizing the armed forces. A Pentagon inspector general report found that Hegseth sent sensitive, nonpublic strike information over Signal in a way that risked harm to DoD personnel and mission objectives.5 He has used religious imagery to attack the press 6 and carried himself less like a public servant in a constitutional democracy and more like a man convinced he answers only to power, ego, and his own mythology.

The Pentagon is not a campaign prop. It is not a television stage. It is not a throne for culture war fantasies. It is a public trust, and Hegseth has no business holding it.

This is a pattern.

A pattern of recklessness.
A pattern of cruelty.
A pattern of constitutional contempt.
A pattern of power abused by someone who should never have been given it.

And that is why impeachment matters.

Not because it is politically convenient.
Not because it makes a good headline.
Not because Democrats need a talking point.

It matters because democracy dies when people in power can launch war without Congress, endanger civilians without consequence, abuse public trust without accountability, and still expect the country to shrug and move on.

We will not move on.

This is a moment for accountability. This is a moment for power to the people. Now is the time for us to speak out, show up, and hold Pete Hegseth accountable before more lives are put at risk, more trust is destroyed, and more of our democracy is handed over to lawless men who mistake power for permission. No More ICE Warehouses in Our Communities

ICE’s detention expansion is not policy. It is a moral emergency and a deliberate assault on our communities. The Trump administration is already locking up more than 70,000 people and is openly pushing to cage more than 100,000 at a time. Now comes the next horror: warehouse camps that could hold as many as 92,600 people across the country. That is not public safety. That is mass cruelty by design.

These warehouse schemes are especially vile because they treat human beings like cargo. Parents, siblings, workers, neighbors, and loved ones could be packed into makeshift industrial spaces built to store products, not protect life. Cutting people off from family, legal support, and community oversight will only fuel more abuse, more neglect, more illness, and more death. A bigger cage does not make cruelty humane. It only makes that cruelty easier to hide.

The danger does not stop at the warehouse doors. These facilities are not built with the water, sewage, and sanitation systems needed to hold thousands of people. Disease can spread fast. Local infrastructure can be overwhelmed. Nearby communities can be forced to carry the public health consequences. Once again, working-class communities and communities of color are being told to absorb the damage from a system built on fear and exploitation.

And let’s tell the truth about what is driving this. Corporations stand to profit by selling or leasing warehouse space to ICE and turning human suffering into a business model. ICE recently bought a Utah warehouse for about $145 million even though it was assessed at roughly $97 million.1 That is obscene. People are not inventory. They are not objects to be processed, stored, and discarded for cash.

But communities across the country are pushing back, and that matters. Communities from Utah to Minnesota, from Oklahoma to Virginia and Mississippi, have organized, resisted, and stopped these projects. They are demanding schools, healthcare, housing, clean water, and real investment instead of cages and secrecy. They are proving that organized people can beat organized cruelty.

This moment also calls on us to remember. Our country has already lived through the shame of using makeshift sites to incarcerate Japanese Americans in the 1940s. It was wrong then. It is wrong now. We do not honor that history with silence. We honor it by rising up and refusing to let it happen again.

War should never be the whim of one man. Peace should never depend on how close Trump is willing to push the world toward catastrophe. Since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, the region has been driven deeper into bloodshed, fear, and instability. Even after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire on April 7, the danger has not passed. Reuters and AP both report that the ceasefire is fragile, its terms are disputed, and wider regional violence could still pull the United States into a deeper conflict. This is not peace. It is a pause, and ordinary people know how quickly a pause can become a permanent disaster.

The American people do not want another endless war. The Guardian reported that a clear majority of Americans oppose this war and want the United States to end its involvement quickly. That matters, because people power begins with telling the truth about what our communities need. We need healthcare, housing, schools, and relief from crushing costs. We do not need another war that burns through lives abroad while families here at home are told there is never enough money for basic dignity. Every bomb dropped in our name is a choice, and the people have every right to reject that choice.

Congress still has power, and that is where pressure matters most. Reuters reports that lawmakers are preparing another vote to require congressional approval for further military action against Iran. At the same time, Congress is being pressed to fund this war machine even further. That means this is a threshold moment. Members of Congress can still choose to block more war, cut off the money, and restore basic checks and balances. If enough constituents speak up, loudly and relentlessly, cracks can widen and political fear can shift. People power is not symbolic. It is leverage.

Silence is not neutrality when civilian devastation is being threatened. Trump’s threats to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges could amount to war crimes under international law because civilian infrastructure cannot be lawfully targeted unless strict legal standards are met. When leaders talk openly about wiping out the foundations of civilian life, the response cannot be indifference. The response must be moral clarity, public pressure, and collective refusal.

Trump’s Iran Threat Should Alarm the World

Trump is unhinged, and he is endangering the world with threats to escalate genocide in Iran. Over the last week, he has dragged the United States and the wider world deeper into disaster by threatening to bomb Iran’s power plants, bridges, and other infrastructure, and on April 7 he warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight.”1 That is not leadership. That is recklessness backed by military force, delivered in language that treats mass civilian suffering as leverage. The danger is not abstract. Reporting has made clear that the war is already taking a horrifying toll, with civilians living in fear, families under siege, and children paying the price for the ambitions of powerful men.

That is why the simple truth matters: almost 80 percent of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump.2 People who call America home are not just registered voters. They are children, elders, immigrants, disabled people, permanent residents, undocumented neighbors, and everyone whose life is shaped by American power whether they ever cast a ballot or not. Using the total U.S. population and Trump’s vote total, the math is clear: only about 22 percent of the people who call America home voted for him. That means nearly 80 percent did not. No president gets to act as though the public handed him permission to terrorize another civilian population simply because he won an election. A president is supposed to represent every person who calls America home, not just voters, not just loyalists, and not just the rich and powerful.

And the legal stakes are real. “Over 100 International Law Experts Warn: U.S. Strikes on Iran Violate UN Charter and May Be War Crimes.”3 International humanitarian law is clear that parties to a conflict must distinguish between civilian objects and military objectives.4 Civilian infrastructure is not supposed to become a target for political tantrums, military theater, or retaliatory spectacle. When a president threatens sweeping attacks on power plants, bridges, and infrastructure that civilians depend on to live, the world should hear that for what it is: a threat that raises serious war-crime concerns.

Children are not leverage. Families are not bargaining chips. Civilization is not a hostage situation.

There is also a genocide-warning framework that people should understand right now. Gregory Stanton’s widely recognized Ten Stages of Genocide are classification, symbolization, discrimination, dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, persecution, extermination, and denial.5 These stages are not always linear. They can overlap, accelerate, and feed off one another. That matters because Trump’s rhetoric about destroying a civilization, normalizing mass death, and treating an entire population as disposable is not something decent people should dismiss as bluster. It is a warning sign. We are supposed to recognize danger before the worst becomes normalized. We are supposed to speak while people can still be protected.

Trump’s war is also a massive and dangerous failure at every level. It is putting the whole world at risk, driving up energy prices, killing civilians, and turning even some of his own supporters against him. As Americans struggle with insane gas prices at home,6 Trump is escalating a war that is murdering Iranian children and families abroad.7 This is what failed leadership looks like: more death, more chaos, more instability, and more suffering for ordinary people. He is not making the world safer. He is making it more dangerous. He is not projecting strength. He is exposing how reckless, cruel, and unfit he truly is.

This is why we the people must speak out. We must document what is being threatened. We must preserve statements, reporting, and public records. We must demand oversight, accountability, and international scrutiny. The International Criminal Court only has jurisdiction over genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression. That does not mean every public threat automatically becomes a criminal conviction. It does mean people have every right to report threats of mass violence, preserve evidence, and demand that no one, including a U.S. president, be treated as above the law.

But silence helps cruelty grow. Documentation matters. Public pressure matters. Refusing complicity matters.

At the Supreme Court, I Saw the Worst of Our Politics and the Best of Our People

Friends, I meant to share this yesterday, but I have still been processing what a beautiful and ugly day it was at the Supreme Court.

The Court was hearing a case over Donald Trump’s attempt to strip birthright citizenship from some children born on U.S. soil, using executive power to challenge the 14th Amendment and a right that has been protected for generations.

I went to Washington, DC, to stand in support of our immigrant friends, family members, co-workers, and community members. I went because millions of people are living under the threat of deportation to countries where many do not speak the language, have no real ties, and in some cases have never even traveled. I went because what is happening is not just cruel. It is the result of political cowardice, manufactured chaos, and years of congressional failure.

That is the truth at the heart of this moment. The case before the Supreme Court is being used as a way to sidestep the work Congress should have done long ago: fix our broken immigration system. Instead of doing that hard work, too many politicians have chosen fear over solutions, slogans over policy, and cruelty over courage.

Let me say this as clearly as I can, because I have said it a million times and I will keep saying it for the people in the back: we all want safe and secure borders. Nobody is asking for chaos. Nobody is asking for violence. Nobody wants dangerous people crossing into our communities unchecked. That is not what immigrants, advocates, or ordinary Americans are demanding. What we are demanding is a system that is lawful, humane, functional, and fair.

For years, our government told people to apply. Apply for green cards. Apply for DACA. Apply for Temporary Protected Status. Apply for refugee protections. Apply, wait, check in, follow the rules, come back next year, and maybe next year Congress will finally fix the system. That message came under both Democratic and Republican control. Year after year, people built lives here while the government kept stringing them along, acknowledging their presence, taking their paperwork, collecting their fees, renewing their protections, and then refusing to deliver permanent answers.

So what does “fix the system” actually mean?

It means having enough judges and court staff so immigration cases are heard fairly and on time, instead of forcing people to wait years in legal limbo. It means securing the border with smart investments, modern technology, and competent management at ports of entry. It means reducing the number of detention beds and ending the profit-driven machinery that treats human beings like inventory. It means reforming legal immigration so it actually reflects the needs and values of the United States. It means increasing resources to process applications and work authorizations efficiently. It means funding case management programs so families understand their legal obligations and can navigate the system. It means hiring more asylum officers and immigration judges so cases move faster and more fairly. It means eliminating unnecessary barriers, like the six-month waiting period for asylum seekers to apply for work authorization. It means addressing the root causes of migration through diplomacy and humanitarian aid. And it means permanently protecting Dreamers, DACA recipients, TPS holders, and others who have spent years contributing to this country while waiting for Congress to act like Congress.

Those are real solutions. They require effort. They require seriousness. They require lawmakers to do their jobs.

But under Donald Trump and with the help of complicit Republicans in Congress, that route is apparently too difficult, because real reform requires work. It requires governing. It requires negotiation. It requires partnering with Democrats instead of demonizing immigrants for political gain. And perhaps most importantly, it threatens the business model of the deportation industry, the private contractors, detention profiteers, and political donors who make enormous sums of money from human suffering.

That is part of what makes me so angry. There is money in this cruelty. There is profit in detention. There is power in fear. And now the same forces that have targeted undocumented immigrants, asylum seekers, Dreamers, TPS holders, and families seeking refuge are trying to stretch that cruelty even further, reaching toward people born and raised here in the United States.

I am angry that any of this is even up for consideration.

And yesterday, standing there, I felt old grief come rushing back.

I remembered the many times I went to Homestead Air Reserve Base and looked toward the children who had been separated from their families. More than 3,000 children were held there in terrible conditions. We stood outside those fences trying to send them air hugs and kisses, trying to send some tiny signal across steel and distance that they were seen, that they were loved, that we would not stop fighting for them. We wanted them to know that even if the people in power treated them as disposable, there were people outside those gates who believed their lives mattered.

Yesterday, all of that came back to me.

Here we are again, with Trump 2.0 trying to unleash another trauma on immigrant families and on this nation. Here we are again, watching cruelty dressed up as policy. Here we are again, hearing powerful people talk about human beings as if they are burdens, threats, or bargaining chips.

Years ago, my sign in front of Homestead read: “I do not know you, but you are my child now, and I will never stop fighting for you.”

Yesterday, at the Supreme Court, my sign read: “My torch welcomes all. If the kids go, I go.”

That is still how I feel.

Because this fight is not just about policy. It is about who we are. It is about whether we still believe children deserve safety, families deserve dignity, and human beings deserve more than cages, court backlogs, and political scapegoating. It is about whether America will be governed by fear, or guided by its highest values.

And even in the middle of such painful circumstances, I saw something yesterday that no ruling, no politician, and no hate-filled movement can erase.

I saw love.

I saw courage.

I saw ordinary people show up for one another.

I saw the same thing I always see when good people gather in defense of their communities: compassion stronger than propaganda, solidarity stronger than fear, and moral clarity stronger than political cruelty.

That is why I still have hope.

Hope is not pretending everything is fine. Hope is not looking away from danger. Hope is choosing to stand together anyway. Hope is showing up at the court, at the fence, in the streets, in our communities, and in the places where power would rather we stay silent. Hope is refusing to let children be abandoned, families be erased, or our humanity be negotiated away.

The forces of cruelty are loud, but they are not the whole story. The whole story is also us. The people who keep showing up. The people who keep loving bigger than fear. The people who keep telling the truth. The people who refuse to give up on one another.

And that is what I carried home with me from Washington.

Yes, it was an ugly day. But it was also a beautiful one, because even in the shadow of injustice, people came carrying light.

We are still here.

We are still standing.

And as long as love, courage, and people power keep rising, this country still has a chance to become more worthy of all the people who call it home.

Friends, how to fight fascism in America is not only a battle over elections, courts, and constitutional rights. It is also a battle over who the economy is built to serve. When working people are pushed to the brink, when families are told to accept endless sacrifice while wealth piles up at the top, and when economic pain is used to divide neighbor from neighbor, authoritarianism finds fertile ground. That is why economic justice is not separate from democracy. It is one of the ways we defend it.

This is the fourth piece in our Accountability Papers series. In How to Fight Fascism in America: Peace, War, and Public Accountability, we warned against unchecked war power. In How to Fight Fascism in America: Democracy, Constitutional Order, and Public Power, we defended democratic guardrails. In How to Fight Fascism in America: Justice for All, we insisted that no one is above the law. This piece carries that work forward by naming another truth: a country cannot stay free when millions are struggling to survive while concentrated wealth rules public life.

We have faced hard times before. Americans have lived through depression, exploitation, crushing inequality, and leaders who treated ordinary people as expendable. But every time the country moved closer to justice, it happened because people organized for something bigger and better. Workers built unions. Families demanded relief. Communities fought for dignity. People did not wait for the powerful to grow a conscience. They raised their voices and made change unavoidable.

Franklin Roosevelt warned that “People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.” Martin Luther King Jr. called on America to “bring about a better distribution of wealth.” And Frances Perkins said she came to Washington to work for “the millions of forgotten, plain common workingmen.” Those are not relics from some distant era. They are instructions for this one.

If we are serious about defeating fascism, then we have to be serious about economic justice for all. An economy that works only for the rich is not efficient. It is unjust. An economy that leaves people working full time and still unable to afford housing, food, health care, and child care is not a sign of progress. It is proof that the rules have been bent toward concentrated wealth. When wages stay flat, profits soar, and budgets keep making room for corporate demands and war spending while families are told to scrape by, people lose trust not only in the economy but in democracy itself.

That is why the answer is not despair. It is organized, visible, collective resistance. We fight fascism by refusing to let billionaires define prosperity. We fight fascism by standing with workers, tenants, families, caregivers, and communities that are being squeezed for someone else’s gain. We fight fascism by demanding budgets that reflect human needs, wages that rise with productivity, and an economy where dignity is not a luxury item.

And that is why showing up on March 28 matters. People Power United is a proud member of the No Kings coalition and the next national day of nonviolent action is Saturday, March 28, 2026, with more than 3,000 local events planned and more being added daily. Public action breaks the spell of helplessness. When people show up together, they remind the country that democracy belongs to the many, not the powerful few. Authoritarianism wants obedience. People power answers with solidarity.

Showing up on March 28 is not the end of the work. It is the doorway into deeper organizing. We challenge lies that blame immigrants, poor people, or vulnerable communities for an economy rigged by concentrated wealth. We build local power because isolation is one of authoritarianism’s favorite tools. And we organize because power to the people is not symbolic language. It is the living practice of ordinary people refusing to be sacrificed for someone else’s fortune.

We hold these Economic Justice truths to be self-evident:

• The economy should serve people, not force people to serve concentrated wealth.

• Full-time work should be enough to afford housing, food, health care, and dignity.

• Workers deserve a larger share of the wealth they create.

• Wages should rise with productivity, not remain stagnant while profits soar.

• Budgets should reflect human needs, not just corporate demands and war spending.

• Extreme inequality is not success. It is proof the rules are rigged.

• Real prosperity means security for families, not record gains for billionaires alone.

• People should not have to choose between medicine, rent, groceries, and child care.

• Wealth should not buy immunity from taxes, regulation, or accountability.

• An economy that leaves millions struggling while a few hoard everything is failing.

So let this be our reminder: peace, accountability, democracy, justice, and economic dignity all depend on the participation and voice of the people. They survive when people show up. They survive when people reject the lie that greed is freedom. They survive when people choose solidarity over scapegoating and courage over silence. Power belongs to the people.

And when we rise together for economic justice, we do more than resist fascism — we help build a country where freedom is real because dignity is real, too.

Trump and His Administration Are Circumventing the Constitution by Buying Data They Would Normally Need a Warrant to Access

Friends, something extraordinary happened in a Senate hearing room on March 18, 2026. Under direct questioning from Senator Ron Wyden, FBI Director Kash Patel admitted that the bureau is actively purchasing Americans’ location data from commercial data brokers — no warrant, no judge’s approval, no probable cause. When Wyden asked whether the FBI would commit to stopping the practice, Patel deflected: “The FBI uses all tools … to do our mission. We do purchase commercially available information that is consistent with the Constitution and the laws under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act — and it has led to some valuable intelligence.”1

This was not a slip. It was a confession. Wyden had been watching this threat build for years. “I’ve been warning for nearly a decade that data available for purchase from companies is just as sensitive as information the government collects directly. Creating AI profiles of Americans based on that data represents a chilling expansion of mass surveillance that should not be allowed, regardless of what the current, outdated laws on the books say.”2 Collecting this data without a warrant, he added, is “an outrageous end run around the Fourth Amendment.” 3

The mechanism being exploited is the “data broker loophole.” Rather than seek a warrant, federal agencies simply purchase what they need. Under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the government also engages in mass, warrantless surveillance of Americans’ phone calls, text messages, and emails — and information collected without a warrant can be used to prosecute and imprison people, even for crimes having nothing to do with national security.4 This tactic has already targeted vulnerable communities: 98 million people had their location data funneled through a third-party data broker to a U.S. military counterterrorism unit simply because they downloaded a mobile prayer app.5

Now layer artificial intelligence on top. The ACLU and Center for Democracy and Technology have put it plainly: “By exploiting the data broker loophole, the government has access to unprecedented data on our lives, our routines, and our relationships. Combining that data with the power of AI would expand the Pentagon’s surveillance powers exponentially.“6 When Anthropic refused to allow its AI to be used for mass domestic surveillance, the Pentagon blacklisted the company — a designation never before publicly applied to an American company — and President Trump directed federal agencies to stop using its technology.7 The alarm has grown so loud that even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman felt compelled to draw the same red lines in a memo to staff: no AI for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons.8 That the leaders of the most powerful AI companies in the world are publicly pledging to resist domestic surveillance demands tells you everything about how serious — and how real — this threat has become.

People Power United joined more than 90 civil liberties organizations to urge members of Congress to act before it’s too late.9

As Congress weighs the future of Section 702, we urge Democratic Members to stand firm against any extension that does not include these critical reforms. Supporting Stephen Miller’s warrantless surveillance agenda would be a massive detriment to the privacy and civil rights and liberties of people in the United States. These surveillance authorities have long jeopardized privacy, and efforts by Miller to continue them without meaningful reforms and sufficient oversight are deeply troubling.

Section 702 is up for reauthorization and the White House is demanding a clean extension with zero reforms. If Congress complies, the combination of warrantless data purchases, AI-powered analysis, and backdoor search authority will create a surveillance apparatus that can be turned against anyone — protesters, journalists, immigrants, and political opponents alike.

The bipartisan Government Surveillance Reform Act10 would close the data broker loophole and require warrants before agencies can buy your private data. It needs your voice now.

Friends, the most dangerous abuses of power do not always arrive with tanks or sirens. Sometimes they arrive wrapped in words like peace, order, and reconstruction. That is what makes Trump’s so-called Board of Peace so alarming. At its first meeting on February 19, Trump announced that the United States would contribute $10 billion to the board after saying other nations had pledged another $7 billion. But Reuters reported that he did not explain where the U.S. money would come from or whether he would even seek approval from Congress. That is not responsible leadership. That is an attempted blank check. And no president should be allowed to treat public money like a personal slush fund for a vanity project branded as global peace.

What makes this even more disturbing is the structure of the board itself. The Board of Peace includes Israel but no Palestinian representatives, even though it is supposed to help govern Gaza’s future. Carnegie’s analysis says the charter gives Trump extraordinary personal power: he can set agendas, break tie votes, interpret disputes, create or dissolve subsidiary bodies, appoint the commander of the stabilization force, and even choose his successor while holding the chairmanship indefinitely. Carnegie also reports that Trump alone selects the Executive Board, which controls budgets, financial accounts, and disbursements, with those decisions remaining under his “direction and control.”1 That is not peacebuilding. That is centralized power wearing a humanitarian costume. If one man controls the money, the structure, the appointments, and the mission, this is not diplomacy. It is domination.

The funding rules make the whole thing look even more like a pay-to-play cartel than a legitimate international body. Member states are limited to three-year terms unless they contribute $1 billion in cash, which allows them to stay on longer. In other words, influence is not earned through legitimacy, representation, or accountability. It is bought. Reuters also reported that major allies and powers including Britain, France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, China, and Russia have not joined, with Brazil and Mexico citing the absence of Palestinians from the board. A body that claims to bring peace while excluding Palestinians and selling longer membership to billion-dollar buyers is not building justice. It is monetizing control. 2

And the financial safeguards appear dangerously weak. Carnegie reported that negotiations are underway for a private account for the board that would be accessible by the chairman and his designees on the Executive Board, while the charter lacks clear oversight, auditing mechanisms, and conflict-of-interest rules.3 Representative Jamie Raskin accused the arrangement of concealing legal and financial structures designed to funnel money to Trump for unilateral use and called it an “unsupervised international slush fund.”4

Congress must act now. Block the money. Demand hearings. Refuse every appropriation. Humanitarian aid and reconstruction should go through transparent, accountable institutions that center the people of Gaza, not through an Orwellian machine built to glorify Trump and concentrate power. Peace without accountability is propaganda. And this scam must be stopped before one more taxpayer dollar is handed over.

The SAVE Act Is a Trojan Horse for Suppression

Friends, the SAVE America Act is not election security. It is a Trojan horse for voter suppression. The bill would force people registering for federal elections to present documentary proof of citizenship in person, such as a passport or birth certificate, and would tighten photo ID and mail-ballot rules even though repeated investigations and state audits have found non-citizen voting to be extremely rare. The burden does not land on fraud. It lands on eligible voters: married women whose names changed, rural voters, some tribal citizens, seniors, and working people who do not have easy access to records. The Brennan Center estimates that more than 21 million Americans lack ready access to the documents these bills demand. (reuters.com)

While they keep shouting about the SAVE Act, the Republicans in the Senate have still failed to fully end the Department of Homeland Security funding mess. 50,000 TSA officers have been working without pay, hundreds have quit, and Reuters reported on March 17 that some small airports may have to shut if the impasse continues. Reuters has also reported that FEMA, another DHS agency, faced restrictions on new disaster deployments during the shutdown. This is what governing by distraction looks like: endless political theater while real systems crack. (reuters.com) It should also be noted that Democrats in the House and Senate have offered to pass a budget bill that funds FEMA and TSA but Republicans continue to block it.

And the distractions are not random. They unfold while pressure grows over the administration’s handling of the Epstein files and while Trump’s war with Iran keeps shifting in purpose, price, and political justification. When leaders cannot defend results, they sell panic. When they cannot solve problems, they change the subject (i.e. the Save Act).

And on immigration, Republicans still refuse the one thing this country actually needs: reform that is secure, lawful, and humane. Friendly reminder, the bipartisan Senate border deal in 2024 failed after Trump pushed Republicans to reject it. Meanwhile, Dreamers remain trapped in legal limbo; current DACA recipients can keep protection for now, but the program still hangs on in court. We should be building a system that secures the border, modernizes legal pathways, and gives longtime undocumented neighbors and DACA kids without criminal convictions a fair shot at dignity, stability, and opportunity. That is what serious leadership looks like.

People Power Demands Accountability for Hegseth’s Bombing of a School

Friends,

Pete Hegseth should not get to drown a school bombing in process language and patriotic swagger. A girls’ elementary school in Minab was hit on February 28, and reporting plus a Senate letter show mounting evidence that U.S. forces were responsible, that the school had been visibly separated from the nearby military complex for years, and that the death toll was at least 168 to 175, mostly children. 1Hegseth now says “the truth matters” and has ordered a formal outside investigation.2 Truth does matter. That is exactly why Congress must drag it into the open under oath.

This is not just about one horrific strike. It is about a defense secretary pushing a misleading narrative while lawmakers and the public are counting on accurate information. The available evidence indicates the target coordinates may have been built from obsolete data, even though the building had clear civilian markers and had long functioned as a school.3 Instead of immediate clarity, the country got evasion, delay, and political spin. That kind of deception poisons democratic oversight, and the price of false premises is always paid in shattered families, dead children, and wars that expand faster than the truth can catch up.

This is also a constitutional test. Senators told Hegseth the war against Iran lacked congressional authorization and demanded a swift public investigation plus measures to pursue accountability.4 That matters because democracy cannot survive when executive power wages war first, shrugs at civilian deaths second, and answers to Congress last. Trust is not a side issue here. Trust is the oxygen of self-government, and Hegseth’s conduct is smothering it.

Worse, Hegseth has been talking like a man auditioning for empire, not serving a constitutional republic. Senators noted that he promised “no stupid rules of engagement” and spoke of “death and destruction from the sky all day long.” Those are not slips of the tongue. They are warning flares. Civilian safeguards are not stupid. The laws of war are not optional. When the person running the Pentagon talks as if restraint is weakness, every family under those bombs has reason to fear what comes next.

And his conduct since then has only deepened the alarm. He lashed out at journalists for not being sufficiently positive about the war, floated propaganda-friendly TV banners, and publicly wrapped his authority in appeals to God while describing himself as answerable to a narrow circle of loyalties.5 Congress should investigate whether personal religious mythology, macho posturing, and media intimidation are bleeding into decisions about targeting and civilian harm. Military power in a democracy must answer to law, facts, and the Constitution—not ego, grievance, or holy-war theatrics.

A subpoena is the bare minimum. Congress should demand the targeting records, the intelligence basis for the strike, the chain of command that approved it, the role of any AI tools, the status of no-strike lists, and every precaution that was supposedly in place to protect civilians. Senators have already asked those questions in writing. Now they need to force real answers in public. If the evidence confirms unlawful conduct, reckless disregard for civilian life, or deliberate deception of policymakers, then firing, impeachment, and removal should be on the table.

Hold Hegseth accountable—not someday, not after the outrage fades, and not after another investigation disappears into a filing cabinet. Accountability means testimony under oath. Accountability means consequences. Accountability means refusing to let powerful men turn dead children into a messaging problem. Congress must act like lives depend on it, because they do.

Friends, America has seen this script before: a war sold as limited, controlled, and necessary, right up until it becomes wider, deadlier, and harder to end.

Right now, the people in charge have refused to rule out American ground troops, suggested the campaign could last “four to five weeks” or “far longer than that,” and acknowledged that roughly 50,000 service members were already involved while additional personnel were being moved into the region. 1

That is exactly why people are right to say no to a draft and no to boots on the ground. When leaders leave the door open to a longer war and refuse to close the door on ground combat, they are asking working families to live with the risk that more and more young people will be pulled into a conflict they did not choose. 2

The warning signs are already flashing. The defense secretary would not explain an exit strategy and said the pace of the war was effectively “on his terms,” while insisting this would not become another endless conflict.3

Americans should hear that and remember how often wars are launched with confidence and wrapped in slogans, only to leave behind body bags, broken families, lifelong trauma, and years of moral and economic wreckage. That is not pessimism. That is history.

And the human cost is no longer hypothetical. The remains of the first six service members killed in the conflict were returned to Dover on March 7, and reporting on March 12 said the death toll had risen to 13 U.S. service members, with about 150 wounded since the war began. 4

Congress was supposed to be the constitutional check against exactly this kind of drift into war. Instead, Republicans in Congress chose to abandon that duty, leaving the decision to send American troops into harm’s way to a reckless and unfit president with no military experience, no steady leadership, and 34 felony convictions.

The deeper problem is that the case for war keeps changing. Reporting showed shifting rationales for the attack even as officials with access to intelligence said they saw no sign of an imminent threat to the United States, while another account said officials seemed unable to land on “one coherent reason for war.”5

That confusion matters because wars without clear goals do not stay small. Critics have described this one as having “no clear goal,” and reporting says the mission has shifted from backing protesters, to eliminating nuclear capacity, to destroying missiles, to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, even as a classified intelligence assessment reportedly warned that a large-scale war was unlikely to overthrow Iran’s entrenched leadership or produce a clean opposition takeover.6

That is not strategy. That is escalation disguised as certainty. And when leaders cannot clearly explain why the war started, how it ends, what victory means, or how many more Americans may die before they are satisfied, the people have every right to reject the next step before it arrives.7 8

So let us be plain: no draft, no boots on the ground, no blank check for another open-ended war. Our young people are not expendable, our troops are not props, and our future should not be sacrificed to another reckless conflict with no honest exit.

What Happened

In March 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14248, titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” directing federal agencies to condition election-related grants and support on states adopting specific voting protocols, including proof-of-citizenship requirements and restrictions on mail-in balloting.1 Pro-Trump activists — some claiming White House coordination — simultaneously circulated a 17-page draft executive order that would declare a national emergency, citing alleged Chinese interference in the 2020 election as justification for seizing sweeping control over the 2026 midterm elections.2 The proposed measures include requiring hand-counted paper ballots, banning most mail voting, and forcing voters to re-register with citizenship documentation.3 States that resist face the prospect of losing federal funding tied to election administration.

Why It Matters

The danger here is structural. The Constitution grants Congress — not the president — authority to regulate the time, place, and manner of federal elections. As the Brennan Center for Justice has made clear, “the president has no role in this constitutional scheme beyond signing or vetoing federal legislation.” When the executive branch asserts emergency powers to override that framework, it doesn’t just bend a rule — it rewrites the relationship between the branches entirely.

Federal courts have already agreed. In LULAC v. Executive Office of the President, a federal district court ruled that “our Constitution entrusts Congress and the States — not the President — with the authority to regulate federal elections.” On October 31, 2025, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly permanently blocked the proof-of-citizenship provisions, finding the order “contrary to the manifest will of Congress”.4 The Center for American Progress warns that declaring a manufactured emergency is “the next escalatory step” — one that would throw midterm elections into chaos and lock in political power outside any democratic mandate.5

Emergency declarations are designed for genuine crises. Using them to impose voting conditions in the absence of any documented emergency sets a precedent that future administrations of any party could exploit. The normalization of emergency power as an electoral tool is the real threat, regardless of which party wields it.

Who Is Harmed

The people most immediately harmed are those least insulated from bureaucratic barriers: low-income voters, elderly Americans, rural communities, naturalized citizens, and communities of color. As the Brennan Center notes, noncitizen voting is “almost nonexistent” given existing laws and penalties — meaning these requirements solve no real problem while creating enormous ones for millions of eligible Americans.6 A Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos poll found that 54 percent of American adults — and 55 percent of independents — oppose Trump’s effort to federalize election administration.7

Election administrators, most of them nonpartisan local officials, are caught between federal pressure and state law, forced to navigate a legal minefield that undermines their ability to run orderly, fair elections. Civil society organizations — including the League of Women Voters, which has filed suit against the March 2025 order — are consuming litigation resources that would otherwise go toward civic engagement.

What Comes Next

Courts have pushed back decisively. But litigation is slow, and elections are not. Congress must reassert its constitutional role by passing legislation that clearly defines the limits of executive authority over elections and protects federal funding from being weaponized as a compliance tool. Election law scholar Ned Foley has stated plainly that “it would take new federal legislation to give the president or any part of the federal executive branch that kind of authority over the conduct of congressional elections”.8

Every emergency declaration touching election administration should require congressional approval within a defined window. Voters must demand transparency — and engagement. The machinery of democracy is only as strong as the consensus to protect it. That consensus requires active defense, not passive hope.

Trump’s nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security is not a personnel decision. It is a political declaration: that loyalty to one man now outranks qualification, integrity, or the rule of law. Mullin is an election denier, an enforcer of mass deportation, and a committed opponent of congressional oversight -- precisely the traits that make him dangerous in this role. Who Is Markwayne Mullin -- and Why Is He So Dangerous at DHS?

Mullin is a Republican junior senator from Oklahoma, a former House member, businessman, rancher, and former MMA fighter who arrived in the Senate in 2023 riding a wave of hard-right Trumpism.1 He is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation -- only the second ever to serve in the Senate -- a distinction that makes his aggressive anti-immigrant enforcement record all the more striking. But his biography is not the issue. His record is.

Mullin has built his political identity around unwavering loyalty to Donald Trump and zero tolerance for accountability. He voted to align with election denial, pushed to expunge both of Trump’s impeachments from the Congressional Record -- a legally baseless stunt to rewrite history -- and has argued, repeatedly, that Congress has little legitimate role in checking presidential power. That is not a political philosophy. That is a recipe for unchecked executive rule.

On immigration, Mullin has championed legislation to massively expand ICE staffing and detention authority, gut legal protections for migrant children, fund thousands of new ICE agents, and accelerate Trump-style mass deportation. He does not believe current enforcement goes far enough. He believes any limit on enforcement -- from courts, Congress, or communities -- is an obstacle to eliminate. On abortion, he holds a “pro-life without exceptions” position, rejecting termination even in cases of rape, incest, or life-threatening medical emergencies.

This is the man Trump wants running the largest law enforcement agency in the United States, overseeing border security, cybersecurity, disaster response, and counterterrorism for over 260,000 employees.2 The question is not whether Mullin is qualified. He is not. The question is whether the Senate will allow loyalty to substitute for competence -- and freedom over fascism demands the answer be no.

The Senate Must Reject Mullin and Demand Real Reform at DHS

Trump fired Kristi Noem3 -- but firing one loyalist and replacing her with another is not reform. It is a cover-up. Mullin will enforce the same destructive policies with the same disregard for oversight, while the administration claims it has turned the page. The Senate must not be complicit in that fiction.

Reject Mullin

Advice and consent is a constitutional firewall. It exists precisely for moments like this. Senators who genuinely believe in institutional integrity, the rule of law, and the protection of immigrant rights must vote no -- and they must say publicly why. A qualified DHS secretary brings federal law enforcement or national security experience, a record of managing large institutions through crisis, and a demonstrated commitment to nonpartisan public service. Mullin brings none of these things. He brings a Twitter following and a plumbing business.

Protect Democracy in the USA Before Authoritarianism Hardens

Fascism rarely begins with a single dramatic event. It grows when cruelty is normalized, when truth is censored, and when people are trained to accept smaller injustices as the price of order. PEN America found 6,870 instances of book bans across 23 states and 87 public school districts in the 2024-2025 school year, with books by LGBTQIA+ authors, authors of color, and women disproportionately targeted.1 That is not a culture war sideshow. It is a warning sign that control over ideas, history, and identity is already being enforced in public life.

The same pattern is unfolding at the ballot box. The Brennan Center reported that states enacted at least 31 restrictive voting laws in 2025, the second-highest annual total since it began tracking this trend in 2011.2 These laws do not make us freer or safer. They make participation harder, especially for Black voters, young voters, disabled voters, working people, and communities already facing voter suppression. When political leaders make voting more difficult, they are not defending democracy. They are narrowing it.

The people driving this agenda are not hiding their intentions. The ACLU says Project 2025 was authored by the Heritage Foundation and 140 former Trump staffers, and describes it as a blueprint to replace rule-of-law constraints with far-right ideological control.3 Other analyses warn that the plan would weaken checks and balances and create an imperial presidency, where loyalty to a strongman matters more than public accountability. This is not ordinary partisan conflict. It is an organized attempt to reshape government so fewer people have more power over everyone else.

We are already seeing parts of that vision move from paper into policy. Reuters reports that the Trump administration’s Schedule Policy/Career rule could strip long-standing protections from up to 50,000 federal workers, making it easier to turn public service into political obedience.4 Students, immigrants, workers, LGBTQIA+ people, communities of color, and anyone who depends on an accountable government are harmed first when democratic guardrails are dismantled.

The status quo is unacceptable because silence does not hold the line.

It gives authoritarianism more room to spread.

Resist Project 2025 by Showing Up Together

The answer to rising authoritarianism is not despair. It is organized, visible, collective resistance.

We fight fascism by refusing to normalize lies, by defending public schools and libraries, by protecting election workers and voting rights, and by standing with every community being singled out for attack.

We challenge disinformation in our families, neighborhoods, and online spaces because truth is one of democracy’s first lines of defense. We build power locally because authoritarian movements count on people feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

That is why mass nonviolent rallies and protests matter right now. 💥 They’re Hiding Predators, Bleeding Us Dry, and Sending Our Kids to Die — ENOUGH.

Fellow freedom fighters, this is not the time for silence. This is not the moment to scroll past, shake our heads, and hope someone else handles it. That someone else is us. It has always been us.

The bombs have begun to fall. Without a declaration of war, without congressional authorization, and without the consent of the American people, the Trump administration has launched military strikes against Iran — and People Power United stands in fierce, unwavering opposition to every life lost in this reckless and unlawful act of aggression.

We mourn the American servicemembers who will be placed in harm’s way.1 We grieve for the civilians on the other side of those bombs who never had a say in the decisions of powerful men. Every flag-draped coffin that returns to American soil will be a consequence of a war that was never legal, never debated, and never approved by the branch of government the Constitution explicitly entrusts with that authority: the United States Congress.

Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution is not a suggestion. It is the supreme law of this land. The power to declare war belongs to the people’s elected representatives — not to any single man sitting behind a desk in the Oval Office. When that line is crossed, we are no longer living in a constitutional republic. We are living under the rule of a strongman. And let us be crystal clear: power to the people does not mean power to a dictator. Across the country, extremist forces are trying to seize power, gut health care, starve essential programs, tear families apart, and funnel public money to billionaires while everyday people pay the price. We are giving them none of it.

America was never meant to be ruled by strongmen, oligarchs, or would-be kings. Power does not flow from crowns or bank accounts — it comes from the people. And the people are standing up.

The No Kings movement is growing because millions of us refuse to bankroll cruelty, normalize authoritarianism, or look away as our freedoms are stripped piece by piece — while citizens are killed, our neighbors are illegally detained, and brutality is inflicted in our name. Yet multiple reports now argue that Donald Trump has used the presidency to generate staggering personal gains. The New York Times editorial board has reported an estimate of at least $1.4 billion in documented profit tied to Trump’s return to office. This extraordinary figure demands immediate oversight, transparency, and accountability.

This isn’t just about one number. It’s about the dangerous pattern it represents: political power leveraged for private enrichment while everyday people face rising costs and shrinking security. Reports describing the $1.4 billion figure point to a web of revenue streams—from business and licensing activity to crypto-related ventures and large payments linked to Trump’s orbit—raising urgent questions about conflicts of interest, undisclosed benefits, and whether policy decisions are being shaped to reward donors, foreign interests, or corporations with access.

We have been here before—and we already know the stakes. During Trump’s first term, House Oversight Democrats documented millions in foreign-government spending at Trump properties1, raising serious Emoluments Clause concerns and highlighting how difficult it is to uncover the full scope of profiteering without robust subpoena power and full financial disclosure.
