A country should never look at its own currency and see the vanity of a sitting president stamped into the people’s daily life. This week, the Treasury Department announced that Donald Trump’s signature will appear on new U.S. paper currency, making him the first sitting president whose signature appears on American legal tender. The change would also remove the treasurer’s signature from new notes, ending a tradition that dates to 1861, with the first new $100 bills expected in June. 1

That is not a harmless design choice. Money is one of the most public symbols a democracy has. It passes through the hands of workers, parents, retirees, immigrants, and neighbors trying to survive in an economy that already asks too much of ordinary people. Our currency should reflect the shared trust of the nation, not the ego of one man.

Trump administration officials have proposed minting a $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump’s image on it to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States next year, a plan that could violate the law. 2

Trump’s allies want Americans to accept this as patriotic pageantry tied to the 250th anniversary. Treasury officials have framed the change as a way to honor both the country and Trump. But that is exactly the problem. A democracy is not supposed to turn public institutions into personal trophies. The people’s money is not a branding exercise. It is not campaign merch. It is not a monument to a living president’s appetite for attention. If anyone deserves to be honored, it is the people of America, who built this country with their work, sacrifice, struggle, and dreams, not one man’s ego.

America has long understood the danger here. Federal law says “[o]nly the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency and securities,”3 a rule tied to the country’s effort to distance itself from monarchy. A signature is not the same as a portrait, but the democratic principle is the same. Our money is not supposed to become a shrine to a living ruler.

That is why this moment matters. Members of a bipartisan advisory committee objected to putting a sitting president on currency because it would “break with democratic norms” and “reek of subservience to royalty.”4 That is the warning in front of us. No free people should be trained to confuse patriotism with personal devotion.

And let’s say the quiet part out loud: when a president starts placing his mark on the people’s symbols, he is not just asking for recognition. Trump and his allies are testing how much public submission the country will tolerate. Today it is a signature. Yesterday it was proposals for presidential coinage. Tomorrow it becomes another demand that the country honor the leader instead of the Constitution, the public, and the rule of law. That is not strength. That is democratic erosion dressed up as tribute.

But this is where people power still matters. We do not have to accept the slow rewriting of public life around one man’s image, name, and ego. We can speak up. We can organize. We can remind Congress and Treasury that they answer to the people, not the other way around. Our currency belongs to the people. Our democracy belongs to the people. And the will of the people still matters.

How Trump Is Betraying Working Families While Starting an Illegal War

Let’s be brutally honest about what is happening in this country. Donald Trump declared himself the “President of Peace” and promised to keep America out of foreign wars. He lied. He has now launched an unauthorized military strike against Iran, putting American service members in harm’s way, violating the United States Constitution, and spending billions in taxpayer money on a conflict Congress never approved. Article I of the Constitution is unambiguous: only Congress has the authority to declare war. The Trump administration ignored that entirely.

The cost of this war of choice is already staggering. Following classified briefings, lawmakers now expect Trump to request an emergency $50 billion in war funding, even as his administration slashes Medicaid, SNAP, public schools, and essential safety net programs. Defense industry executives are meeting at the White House to discuss rapid weapons replenishment as American-made bombs deplete stockpiles. Over 1000 people and children in the region have already been killed. This war does not protect the American people. It protects oil company profits and the billionaire class that has wanted to topple the Iranian government for decades.

Let me be very clear: Iran’s regime was a brutal dictatorship, but our responsibility was to pursue change through diplomacy or through action authorized by Congress.

At the very same time, the administration’s brutal ICE and CBP regime continues terrorizing communities across this country. The firing of Kristi Noem from DHS is long overdue, but let’s be clear: a leadership change changes nothing about the policies that led to the tear-gassing and jailing of children, the warrantless kidnappings, the separation of families, and the deaths of dozens of people in ICE detention, including the murders of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. The administration still has a staggering $150 billion available for ICE and CBP from the 2025 reconciliation bill, and Republicans are blocking emergency funding for FEMA, TSA, and other essential services unless they can extract even more money to jail immigrant families and children.

This administration is also directly harming families right now in ways that cost lives. Since January 2025, the administration’s brutality has already killed Keith Porter Jr., Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and at least thirty-two others. Masked agents rip parents from children in our streets. The White House then turns around and tells us there is no money for schools, food assistance, or healthcare. This is not a budget crisis. It is a moral catastrophe, manufactured on purpose by people in power who benefit from chaos and fear.

The American people are being asked to fund all of it: the illegal war, the ICE slush fund, the billionaire tax breaks, the golden ballrooms. This is economic injustice of the most extreme and shameless kind. And the status quo is completely unacceptable.

How to Resist Authoritarianism: The No Kings Movement Is Our Answer

Here is what they do not want you to know: we are winning. Not in every fight, not every day. But the movement is growing faster than the forces trying to crush it. On June 14, 2025, five million people rose up and said No Kings. On October 18, 2025, seven million more made it unmistakable. On Saturday, March 28, 2026, we rise again, stronger, broader, and more united than ever, for the largest No Kings national day of action yet. Thousands of peaceful, lawful actions will take place in communities nationwide.

Non-violent, people-led movements are the most powerful force for change in history. History is clear: it is not force, not one politician, not one election alone that ends authoritarianism. It is people organizing together in their communities, showing up consistently, and refusing to be silenced. Every No Kings event is grounded in de-escalation, nonviolent action, and collective discipline. When communities stand together in lawful protest, fear loses its grip.

The majority of Americans across party lines oppose war with Iran. The majority of Americans do not want their tax dollars funding ICE raids and mega detention warehouses. The majority of Americans believe in immigrant rights, reproductive freedom, workers’ rights, and social justice advocacy. Congress is not yet where the public is. That gap is what we are here to close. And we close it by showing up, speaking out, and refusing to normalize any of this.

ICE Out for Good

People Power United is joining a national ICE Out For Good Weekend of Action on January 10–11 to demand accountability, honor the life lost in the Minneapolis ICE shooting, and highlight the human toll of immigration enforcement. More than 1,000 events are planned nationwide in cities from Minneapolis to New York as part of this nonviolent mobilization. The coalition is calling for an end to ICE and CBP raids, accountability for the killing, and continued lawful protest to protect communities and stand up for justice.

As Donald Trump escalates his authoritarian power grab, the No Kings movement is rising stronger than ever. Across America, millions are uniting to remind the world that this nation has no thrones, no crowns, and no kings. From sending masked agents into our streets to silencing voters and enriching billionaires while families struggle, Trump’s regime and his accomplices have shown contempt for democracy and the people it’s meant to serve. 🧭 Know Your Rights at Protests and Rallies

Attending a peaceful rally or protest is a constitutional right protected by the First Amendment. You have the right to speak out, assemble, and demand change—but it’s important to know your rights and how to stay safe.

⚖️ Your Rights

• You have the right to rally and protest in public spaces such as streets, sidewalks, and parks. You do not have the right to block public walkways, sidewalks, or private property. Some spots require a permit by event organizers. Some spots require a permit for loudspeakers by event organizers.

• You can record police and public officials performing their duties, as long as you don’t interfere.

• You can rally or protest without being targeted for your race, religion, immigration status, or beliefs.

🧰 Before You Go

• Bring photo ID, a charged phone, water, and snacks.

• Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing

• Leave valuables, non-essential cards, and personal info at home.

• Go with a buddy and plan how to reconnect if separated.

🚨 If You’re Stopped or Detained

• Stay calm. Ask if you are free to leave. If yes, walk away calmly.

• If you’re detained, ask, “Am I under arrest?” If yes, you have the right to remain silent.

• Do not resist arrest, even if you believe it’s unlawful. You can challenge it later in court.

• Document what happens—record names, badge numbers, and time if possible.

• You don’t have to answer questions beyond giving your name and address if requested.

• You do not have to consent to a search of yourself, your belongings, or your phone.

• You can remain silent. If you choose to do so, say clearly, “I am exercising my right to remain silent.”

• If arrested, ask for a lawyer immediately. Do not sign or say anything without legal counsel.

• You still have First Amendment rights.

• You do not have to answer questions about your citizenship status.

The Courage of Ordinary People Stops Fascism — and It Starts with Us

Fascism doesn’t arrive with fanfare or sudden violence. It creeps in quietly — through lies, fear, and apathy — eroding rights, silencing dissent, and consolidating power until resistance seems impossible. History has shown what happens when people wait too long to act. The cost of silence is always freedom.

But good news: the most potent defense against fascism isn’t found in palaces or war rooms. It’s found in us — ordinary people who refuse to look away. The ones who pick up a pen to write letters to lawmakers, sign petitions demanding justice, march in the streets, call lawmakers, talk with friends and family, and show up to rallies and the halls of Congress to be heard. These are not small acts; they are the heartbeat of democracy.

Decentralized, determined, and deeply human, grassroots power has always been the antidote to tyranny. From the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. to Solidarity in Poland and the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, change began when ordinary people stood together and said, No more.

Today, we face a new threat: Project 2025, a blueprint for authoritarian control that would criminalize abortion, target immigrants, and dismantle Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It’s a plan to hand unchecked power to a small elite while silencing millions. But we’ve seen this playbook before and know how to stop it.

We stop it with hope, believing that a better world is possible. We stop it with respect, refusing to dehumanize even as we’re attacked. And we stop it with unity, standing shoulder to shoulder, because an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

Fascism thrives on despair and division. Democracy thrives on courage and connection. So let’s keep showing up — in letters, marches, and every act of resistance. Together, our collective courage can light the way forward.
