Courts checked government power, immigrant-rights advocates won new protections, communities defended treasured public lands, reproductive healthcare access expanded, and workers used collective action to secure stronger protections.

🗽 Wins for Freedom Over Fascism

A federal judge blocked the government from using anti-terrorism money to force changes to election rules. A federal court ruled September 28 that the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA could not condition public-safety grants on states and local governments adopting federal election requirements. The ruling means communities can continue receiving anti-terrorism funding without being compelled to alter their election procedures. Brennan Center for Justice

Federal judge temporarily protects nearly $56 million in housing-counseling grants. On October 1, a judge blocked the Department of Housing and Urban Development from immediately canceling grants supporting homebuyer education, foreclosure prevention, and rental counseling while a legal challenge proceeds. The order keeps the funding available for now while the court considers claims that the cancellations violated federal law and constitutional protections. NC Newsline

🫶 Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Federal court strikes down ICE’s courthouse-arrest policy nationwide. A federal judge ruled October 1 against a policy that permitted civil immigration arrests in and around immigration courthouses. The ruling restores restrictions on courthouse enforcement, with limited exceptions, so people can attend immigration proceedings without the same threat of being arrested simply for appearing in court. A second federal judge blocks the administration’s $100,000 H-1B visa fee. On October 1, a federal judge ruled that the administration had not followed required rulemaking procedures when imposing the dramatically increased fee on new H-1B visas. The decision follows an earlier ruling against the policy and prevents the fee from taking effect while the legal dispute continues. Democracy Forward

🌎 Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Justice Samuel Alito steps aside from major Supreme Court climate case. On September 28, Justice Samuel Alito recused himself from Suncor Energy v. County Commissioners of Boulder County, a closely watched case over whether Boulder, Colorado, can pursue state-law claims against Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil for alleged climate-related harms. Alito gave no public explanation for stepping aside. He does not own stock in either company involved in the case, but financial disclosures show holdings in other oil companies, and advocacy groups had urged his recusal. The case could affect dozens of similar lawsuits brought by state and local governments seeking to hold fossil-fuel companies accountable for alleged climate deception and resulting costs. NY Times

Judge temporarily halts border-wall construction in the Big Bend region. A federal judge ordered a pause on construction and ground disturbance connected to border infrastructure in and around Texas’ Big Bend region after residents and environmental advocates challenged federal waivers of environmental and historic-preservation laws. The court found the challengers were likely to succeed on at least one claim and faced irreparable harm without an injunction. The Guardian

💗 Wins for Reproductive Freedom for All

California expands reproductive healthcare access through a new package of laws. Nine measures signed September 27 expand reproductive and maternal healthcare, including medication-abortion access at community colleges when funding is available, broader scopes of practice for qualified healthcare professionals, and additional support for perinatal and postpartum care. California strengthens protections for reproductive healthcare patients and providers. Additional legislation signed into law strengthens safeguards for sensitive health information and protections against certain out-of-state efforts targeting reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare that is legal in California. The measures take effect January 1, 2027. California DOJ

✊ Wins for Labor Rights

Unions secure a settlement reversing mass-firing orders for federal workers. Labor unions announced September 28 that they had reached a settlement resolving litigation over reduction-in-force notices issued during the 2025 government shutdown. Earlier court orders had blocked the firings and required reinstatement where employees had already been separated. The settlement withdraws the challenged firing orders. SEIU

More than 1,000 apartment-building workers reach a tentative agreement after preparing to strike. Workers represented by 32BJ SEIU in New York’s mid-Hudson Valley reached a proposed four-year contract providing a $4 hourly wage increase, continued employer-funded healthcare and pensions, and preservation of overtime protections. The agreement still requires worker ratification. Times Union

These victories came through lawsuits, organizing, legislation, community advocacy, and workers standing together. Different people used different tools, but the lesson running through every story is the same: progress happens when people refuse to surrender their voice or their power.

Supreme Court blocks last-minute changes to mail voting before the midterms. The Supreme Court rejected the administration’s request to enforce new Postal Service restrictions on mail ballots ahead of the November 3 election, leaving existing state voting procedures in place. The immediate result is that states and voters will not have to navigate a new ballot-delivery system just weeks before Election Day. Legal Defense Fund

California enacts new protections for ballots and election systems. A package signed September 19 creates penalties for unauthorized seizure or interference with ballots and election records, extends some vote-by-mail drop-off hours, strengthens cybersecurity provisions, and expands disclosure requirements for paid political content. The measures add new protections around election administration and transparency ahead of the 2026 midterms. The Guardian

🫶 Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Appeals court rules third-country deportation policy unlawful. The First Circuit unanimously held that people facing removal to countries other than their own must receive notice and a meaningful opportunity to raise fears of persecution or torture. The decision strengthens due-process protections for immigrants who could otherwise be sent to countries where they have no ties. The Washington Post

Federal judge orders longtime refugee released from ICE detention. Robert Tony Totpal, a stateless man who came to the United States with his family as a refugee in 1984, was ordered released from the Northwest ICE Processing Center within 24 hours; the court also required notice and a hearing before any future re-detention. The ruling reinforces that immigration detention remains subject to constitutional due-process requirements. Justia

🌎 Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Judge rules EPA unlawfully terminated the $7 billion Solar for All program. A federal judge vacated the EPA’s cancellation of grants intended to expand solar access for low-income communities, rejecting the agency’s claim that it had authority to terminate the awards. The ruling could preserve clean-energy investments designed to lower electricity costs and expand access to solar power for hundreds of thousands of households. Reuters

Vineyard Wind and GE Vernova settle their legal dispute, removing uncertainty around a major offshore wind project. The companies ended their litigation and GE withdrew its attempt to terminate its involvement; all 62 turbines are now capable of producing power for more than 400,000 homes and businesses, according to the project. Federal appeals court keeps Washington’s abortion-coverage law in place. The Ninth Circuit upheld Washington’s Reproductive Parity Act against a constitutional challenge, preserving requirements that most state-regulated health plans covering maternity care also cover abortion. The decision maintains existing insurance access to reproductive healthcare for Washington patients. Law360

Illinois launches a statewide reproductive healthcare resource hub. The new online hub brings together information about reproductive healthcare, patient rights, finding care, and help paying for services. Centralizing those resources gives patients a clearer path to understanding and accessing reproductive healthcare in the state. State of Illinois

✊ Wins for Labor Rights

Providence nurses ratify a new contract with stronger safety and workplace protections. Nurses at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett overwhelmingly approved a new agreement that includes wage increases along with improvements involving workplace safety, break nurses, education, bereavement leave, and other working conditions. The agreement turns sustained worker organizing into concrete improvements on the job. UFCW 3000

Frontier Airlines mechanics approve a new five-year union contract. Nearly 500 Teamsters mechanics voted 93% to ratify an agreement providing wage increases, higher pension contributions, increased license premiums, bonuses, and an additional week of vacation for longtime workers. The contract shows collective bargaining translating directly into higher compensation and stronger retirement benefits. International Brotherhood of Teamsters

Texas Supreme Court stops Republicans from changing voting maps in the middle of an election. The court blocked Galveston County officials from switching district lines after voters had already chosen nominees under different boundaries during the primary. This is a win because politicians should not be able to change the rules after an election has begun to manufacture a partisan advantage. (Democracy Docket)

🫶 Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Appeals court blocks IRS from handing taxpayer information to ICE. A unanimous federal appeals panel upheld an order stopping an IRS system that had disclosed confidential taxpayer information to immigration authorities without satisfying federal privacy requirements. This is a win for immigrant communities and everyone who values privacy because the government must obey laws protecting sensitive taxpayer information instead of turning federal databases into shortcuts for immigration enforcement. (The Washington Post)

🌎 Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Seattle community wins back pollution protections after challenging tire burning. After two years of organizing and litigation, community advocates succeeded in reinstating a limit on the amount of tires a Seattle cement facility can burn after testing found increased levels of a toxic heavy metal. This is a win for environmental justice because residents demanded evidence, accountability, and cleaner air, and their persistence produced a concrete pollution safeguard. (Earthjustice)

✊ Wins for Labor Rights

New England bakery workers avert a strike and win stronger wages, pensions and job security. More than 200 sales and warehouse workers ratified a six-year agreement by a 90% vote after previously authorizing a strike, winning wage increases, pension improvements, lower health-care costs, and stronger job protections. This is a win for labor rights because workers stood together, demonstrated they were prepared to withhold their labor, and turned that collective power into a better contract. Federal judge blocks Trump administration’s “loyalty question” for federal job applicants. A federal judge stopped the government from requiring applicants for nonpolitical civil-service jobs to explain how they would advance Trump’s policies and executive orders. This is a win for democracy because career public servants should be chosen for their qualifications and commitment to serving the public, not for demonstrating political loyalty to a president. Fourth Circuit rejects Trump administration’s no-bond ICE detention policy. A federal appeals court ruled that the administration cannot automatically detain longtime immigrants without giving them a chance to seek release on bond, marking the policy’s ninth appellate defeat. This is a major due-process win because people who have lived in the United States for years should not be locked away indefinitely without an individualized hearing before a judge. Politico

Judge orders government to bring deported Houston woman back to the United States. A federal judge ordered officials to return Marcela Linda Arias, a longtime Houston resident who was deported to Nicaragua even though a pending immigration motion should have paused her removal. This is a powerful due-process win because immigration authorities do not get to ignore legal protections and then make the consequences irreversible by putting someone on a plane. 🌎 Wins for Protecting Our Planet

Court rejects Trump administration order forcing Michigan coal plant to stay open. A federal appeals court ruled that the Energy Department overstepped its emergency authority when it prevented the planned retirement of Michigan’s J.H. Campbell coal plant. This is a major win for clean energy, consumers, and the rule of law because the government cannot invent an emergency to keep aging, polluting coal plants operating. (Earthjustice)

💗 Wins for Reproductive Freedom for All

Appeals judges question attempt to restrict abortion-pill access nationwide. A Fifth Circuit panel sharply questioned Louisiana’s attempt to overturn federal rules allowing mifepristone to be prescribed through telehealth and dispensed by mail, including whether the state has standing to bring the case. There is no final ruling yet, but this is encouraging news because current access remains in place while another attempt to impose nationwide abortion restrictions is facing serious judicial skepticism. ✊ Wins for Labor Rights

Nearly 1,900 video-game workers win historic union contracts with protections against AI and layoffs. Workers across Blizzard Entertainment ratified the first contracts covering teams behind World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and other major games, securing wage improvements, job protections, remote-work provisions, grievance rights, and a requirement that management bargain over workplace use of artificial intelligence. This is a major labor win because workers are proving that even in rapidly changing technology industries, employees can organize and claim a voice over how AI, layoffs, and workplace policies affect their livelihoods. Judge blocks Trump’s new mail-voting restrictions through the midterms — A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction stopping the Postal Service from enforcing sweeping new requirements on states sending mail ballots for the November election, finding the rule unconstitutional and unsupported by federal law. This is a huge win for democracy because millions of Americans should not have their ability to vote put at risk by last-minute federal rules that states cannot realistically implement before Election Day. Supreme Court refuses to force Michigan proof-of-citizenship measure onto the ballot — The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an attempt to force a proposed constitutional amendment requiring additional proof of citizenship onto Michigan’s November ballot after supporters failed to meet the state’s signature-validation requirements. This is a win for voting rights because powerful groups should have to follow the same ballot-access rules as everyone else, and eligible voters should not face unnecessary new barriers based on unsupported claims about noncitizen voting. Missouri Supreme Court throws out Republican-drawn congressional map — Missouri’s highest court unanimously ruled that the state cannot use a newly drawn congressional map this fall and cleared the way for voters to decide the map’s future through a referendum. This is a win for democracy because politicians should not be able to redraw political power for themselves while shutting voters out of the process. The Washington Post

Reproductive Freedom for All

Lawsuit seeking to revoke access to mifepristone is put on hold — A federal judge paused a lawsuit brought by Texas and Florida seeking to revoke federal approval of mifepristone until at least December 1 or completion of an ongoing federal review. This is a win, even if temporary, because medication abortion remains available while yet another attempt to dramatically restrict access works its way through the courts. Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Federal court dismisses Trump DOJ lawsuit challenging New Jersey’s limits on ICE activity — A federal court dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit seeking to overturn New Jersey restrictions on federal immigration officers’ use of nonpublic state property and resources for civil immigration enforcement. This is a win for immigrant communities because states can set lawful limits on how their own property and resources are used, and the court rejected the federal government’s claim that New Jersey’s policy unlawfully discriminated against federal authorities. Judge blocks Trump’s newest attempt to restrict birthright citizenship — A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against Trump’s latest executive order seeking to deny citizenship to additional children born in the United States, saying the Supreme Court had already established that children covered by the lawsuit are citizens at birth. California Legislature passes the No Kings Act - California lawmakers approved legislation that would make it easier for people to sue individual federal officers, including ICE agents, in state court for violations such as unlawful searches, racial profiling, infringements on free speech, and wrongful death. California sends stronger reproductive-health privacy protections to the governor. - California lawmakers approved AB 1930, which would strengthen the state’s shield protections by requiring certain entities to alert the attorney general before turning over information sought through subpoenas involving legally protected abortion or gender-affirming care. This is a win for reproductive freedom because patients and providers should be able to obtain lawful medical care without fearing that hostile governments will weaponize their private health information against them. Eighth federal appeals court rejects mandatory detention without bond. - The Third Circuit ruled that the administration cannot automatically lock up nearly all undocumented immigrants without giving them access to bond hearings, joining seven other federal appeals courts that have rejected the policy. This is a win for immigrant rights because due process requires individual decisions about detention, not a system where people who have lived in their communities for years can be imprisoned indefinitely without a neutral decision-maker hearing their case. Court protects Mississippi’s only majority-Black judicial district - A federal court rejected an effort to stop DeSoto County’s majority-Black judicial subdistrict from being used in November, preserving the county’s only judicial district where Black voters have a meaningful opportunity to elect candidates of their choice. Federal judge blocks Idaho from punishing doctors for health-protecting abortions - A federal judge blocked Idaho officials from enforcing the state’s criminal abortion ban when a physician determines abortion care is necessary to protect a patient’s health or prevent death from self-harm. This is a win for reproductive freedom because patients should not have to deteriorate to the brink of death before doctors are legally allowed to provide the medical care they need. CBS2 Idaho News

Wins for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

Appeals court upholds bond-hearing rights for thousands detained by ICE - The First Circuit upheld a ruling finding that the Trump administration was unlawfully denying bond hearings to thousands of people arrested by ICE in New England, becoming the seventh federal appeals court to reject the administration’s detention theory. This is a win for immigrant rights because the government cannot simply lock people away indefinitely without giving them a chance to ask a judge for release while their immigration cases proceed. Court forces the Pentagon to restart reviews of more than 100 wind projects - A federal court ordered the Defense Department to end its blanket freeze on wind-energy project reviews, reopening the process for more than 100 proposed projects representing roughly 46,000 megawatts of potential power generation. • US judge blocks Trump from ending protections for 2,800 Yemeni nationals
  A federal judge stopped the administration from ending Temporary Protected Status for Yemenis, preserving work authorization and protection from deportation for now. The judge said DHS failed to follow the legal process Congress requires for reviewing TPS decisions. Reuters

• Second federal appeals court rejects Trump’s no-bond immigration detentions, deepening circuit split
  The 11th Circuit became the second federal appeals court to reject the administration’s attempt to deny bond hearings to many immigrants already living in the United States. The ruling strengthens due-process protections and increases the odds that the Supreme Court will eventually have to settle the issue. AP

• Federal court rules against new global tariffs Trump imposed
  A federal trade court struck down Trump’s new 10% global tariffs, saying he exceeded the authority Congress gave him and calling the tariffs “invalid” and “unauthorized by law.” It is a clear rule-of-law story because the court reasserted that presidents cannot simply invent sweeping tariff powers on their own.
