Workers built this country. Not billionaires. Not hedge fund managers. Not corporate executives hiding wealth behind tax loopholes. Every day, ordinary people keep this nation alive. Teachers, nurses, drivers, warehouse workers, caregivers, service workers, and parents holding everything together create the value that powers this economy. Yet while working families struggle to afford rent, food, healthcare, and childcare, the ultra-rich keep stacking obscene fortunes on top of a system rigged in their favor.

That is not fairness. That is not freedom. That is greed protected by policy.

For decades, politicians have told working people there is no money for affordable housing, public schools, healthcare, elder care, or lower costs. But somehow there is always money for corporate giveaways, billionaire tax breaks, and policies that let the rich hoard even more. Families are expected to sacrifice. Workers are expected to be patient. Meanwhile, the ultra-rich buy another mansion, another private jet, another seat at the table where the rules get written.

Enough.

This is not about punishing success. It is about ending a system where wealth is built on public infrastructure, public labor, and public sacrifice, then hidden from public responsibility. No one earns billions in a vacuum. No one gets that rich without workers creating the wealth, communities absorbing the cost, and government helping make it possible. If working people pay taxes out of every paycheck, the ultra-rich can pay their fair share too.

Workers over billionaires means drawing a moral line. It means choosing schools over tax shelters, healthcare over loopholes, housing over hoarding, and democracy over oligarchy. It means refusing to accept a country where a handful of people hold more wealth than entire communities while millions live one emergency away from disaster.

The ultra-rich have taken enough. This country belongs to the people who make it run. We do not owe billionaires our silence while they rig the rules and raid the future. We owe each other courage, solidarity, and action.

Friends, across the United States, families are facing an affordability crisis that grows more urgent by the day. Prices have surged in recent years while wages have struggled to keep pace, forcing millions of people to rely on credit cards simply to cover groceries, rent, medical care, and other basic needs. What should be a short-term financial bridge has instead become a long-term trap—one powered by soaring interest rates and record-breaking profits for banks and financial institutions.

Today, Americans carry more than $1.2 trillion in credit card debt, and nearly 40 percent of households are using credit just to stay afloat. More than half of borrowers carry balances month to month, not because of reckless spending, but because survival itself has become expensive. At the same time, average credit card interest rates have climbed above 22 percent, nearly doubling over the past decade and reaching the highest levels ever recorded. This is not a system designed to help people recover. It is a system extracting wealth from working families already under strain.

Power to the people means refusing to accept vulture-level interest rates as normal. It means recognizing that access to fair, affordable credit is part of economic dignity. When lenders charge rates that generate profits far beyond other banking activities, the result is not innovation—it is inequality and predatory. Families fall deeper into debt, communities lose stability, and opportunity slips further out of reach.

That is why the 10 Percent Credit Card Interest Rate Cap Act of 2025 represents more than a policy proposal. It is a lifeline. By capping rates at 10 percent for five years, this legislation would provide real breathing room for households struggling to catch up on bills and rebuild financial security. Research shows such a cap could save Americans up to $100 billion each year, putting hundreds of dollars back into the pockets of everyday people instead of Wall Street balance sheets.

This moment calls for courage and clarity. Congress must choose whether our economy serves corporate profit alone or the people whose labor sustains it. Fair interest rates are not radical—they are reasonable, humane, and necessary for shared prosperity.

Freedom Over Fascism Means Putting People First

Friends, our tax dollars should serve the common good — protecting families, caring for veterans, seniors, children, and ensuring dignity for everyone who calls this country home. When that promise is broken, democracy itself is weakened.

Today, taxpayer dollars are being funneled to Big Oil and corporate interests while life-saving programs are cut. This isn’t fiscal responsibility. It’s a moral failure.

The federal government continues to provide tens of billions in subsidies and tax breaks to fossil fuel corporations — some of the most profitable companies on Earth — while politicians push budgets that slash Affordable Care Act subsidies, cut Medicaid and Medicare, weaken Social Security, reduce SNAP and food assistance, shrink veterans’ programs, and gut affordable housing. And now there’s talk of handing even more subsidies and tax breaks to Big Oil to rebuild oil drilling infrastructure in Venezuela, even as health care, food assistance, and housing are stripped from families here at home.

These choices have real consequences. When health care is taken away, people die. When food assistance is cut, children go hungry. When housing programs are dismantled, homelessness rises. When seniors lose support, fear replaces dignity. When veterans are denied care, our nation breaks its word.

This is not accidental. It is a deliberate transfer of wealth and power away from working families and toward corporations and political elites.

Freedom over fascism means rejecting a system where public money props up private greed while everyday people are told to accept less. Authoritarianism thrives when people are forced into desperation — when healthcare, housing, and food become privileges instead of rights.

Progress means investing in people, not polluters. Every dollar handed to Big Oil is a dollar stolen from families who need affordable healthcare, from seniors relying on Social Security, from veterans seeking stability, and from children who deserve safe homes and full plates.

Cutting Affordable Care Act subsidies while protecting oil profits is cruelty. Slashing Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, and housing assistance while expanding corporate giveaways is abandonment.

Power to the people means our budget should reflect our values. Trump’s Fossil Fuel Focus Means Higher Bills for Us

Working families across America don’t need another lecture about “energy dominance.” We’re living the reality—opening our utility bills and watching the numbers climb higher month after month. In 2025, the truth is undeniable: Donald Trump’s gas-first energy agenda is driving up energy costs, and everyday people are paying the price.

The data is clear. A new analysis shows that energy bills in the United States have increased by 13% since Trump took office, a sharp rise that cuts directly into household budgets already strained by rising living costs. This isn’t an abstract policy debate—it’s money coming straight out of people’s pockets. Natural gas, which Trump has aggressively promoted through expanded exports, is a major driver of these increases. U.S. households paid $124 more on natural gas in the first nine months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to a detailed analysis of energy markets. That spike isn’t accidental. The scale of this export frenzy is staggering. As one expert noted, “The United States is exporting so much natural gas that the eight export terminals are consuming … more natural gas than all 184 million Americans that get direct natural gas from utilities.” — Truthout

Trump once promised to slash electricity bills in half. Instead, Americans are seeing the opposite. Electricity costs in 2025 are higher than in 2024, with households experiencing an average increase of up to 13%, depending on the season. “Trump also promised to halve electricity bills in his first year, but those have also gone up in 2025 compared to 2024.” — Truthout

Even worse, the administration is enabling Wall Street interests to profit while families struggle. The damage is nationwide in scope. Since January 2025, over 108 million electric customers and nearly 49 million natural gas customers across almost every state face increased or proposed utility costs totaling almost $85.8 billion. — Center for American Progress

But today, that vision is under attack.

We Deserve a Functioning Government — Not the Economic Chaos Dictated by Trump and Complicit Republicans

America deserves a government that works for its people — not one held hostage by Trump and his Republican enablers.

Here’s a reality check: Trump and Republicans hold the White House, the Senate, and the House—yet instead of governing, they’ve chosen chaos. Under their watch, unemployment has climbed to its highest level in four years, energy costs have surged by more than 13%, food costs are out of control, and families are struggling just to get through the holidays. Rather than stepping up, Trump and Republicans are continue to weaponize government against our communities to advance an extremist agenda.

The consequences are real and painful. Millions of working families are being squeezed, with nearly 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.1 Still, Trump and his allies refuse to work across the aisle to deliver real relief. As people face the threat of losing their health care and even their homes, House Speaker Mike Johnson shows no interest in extending Affordable Care Act protections—leaving families to pay the price for Republican dysfunction.

This isn’t leadership — it’s sabotage.

Meanwhile, the wealthiest 1% own more than the bottom 93% of Americans. 2 That’s not freedom — that’s feudalism. Trump’s policies reward billionaires, corporations, and cronies while ordinary Americans are left wondering how to pay rent, buy groceries, or keep the lights on.

We Deserve to Be Healthy — Not Left to Die in a Manufactured Health Crisis

A moral government invests in health, research, and care — not in cruelty. Yet Trump and Republicans have turned a broken system into a full-blown healthcare crisis.

Instead of fixing it, Trump’s shutdown has furloughed 84% of HUD staff, halting rental assistance and housing-subsidy programs that millions depend on.7

While ordinary Americans face eviction and uncertainty, Trump and his congressional allies hand out massive tax breaks to billionaires and real estate moguls. And let’s not even start on the demolition of the East Wing of the White House — a reckless vanity project wasting over $200 million to satisfy Trump’s ego with a new entertainment complex built for himself, not the people. 8 They’ve created a housing crisis while rewarding the very people profiting from our pain.

We Deserve Education — Not Indoctrination

A healthy government educates its citizens — it doesn’t silence or try to indoctrinate them.

Trump and Republicans have cut funding, fired career educators, closed essential departments, overturned student debt forgiveness, and tried to strong-arm colleges into pushing a MAGA-driven Christian nationalist ideology. 9

Trump and Republicans fear critical thinking because it exposes corruption, inequality, and lies. Education is the heartbeat of democracy — and they’re trying to stop it.

We Deserve Safety — Not a World in Chaos

Safety means more than protection from violence — it means stability, peace, and global respect.

Yet Trump’s reckless foreign policy has alienated allies, broken promises, and turned the world against us. His decisions have made Americans less safe abroad and at home.

Instead of addressing gun violence, climate change, or disaster preparedness, Trump’s administration and Republicans in Congress prioritize propaganda and political revenge. We are less safe because they value power over people. We are less safe as Trump wastes time on social media — obsessing over followers and attacking Americans — instead of doing his job to address income inequality and the mounting crises in housing, healthcare, education, and the environment.

Friends, we are at an inflection point. The Social Security Administration—one of the most successful and trusted public institutions in U.S. history—is being deliberately weakened by the Trump administration’s Project 2025 agenda. The staffing cuts, office closures, and bureaucratic barriers now crippling the agency are not accidents or inefficiencies—they are part of a calculated effort to erode faith in government and dismantle the economic lifeline that millions of Americans depend on. Social Security is not just a retirement program; it is the cornerstone of dignity and stability for generations of working people who built this country and paid into the system with every paycheck.

Today, the consequences are devastating. Trump’s budget cuts have gutted the Social Security Administration’s workforce, shuttering field offices and leaving seniors, disabled Americans, and struggling families waiting for benefits they have earned. These attacks are compounded by harmful proposals to eliminate the tax on Social Security benefits, starve the trust fund of revenue, and accelerate its insolvency. Policies targeting workers further threaten the payroll base that helps sustain the program. And while the administration peddles false claims of “massive fraud” to justify these rollbacks, it offers no evidence—while quietly pushing privatization schemes like “baby accounts” that would turn a guaranteed public benefit into a risky Wall Street gamble.

Make no mistake: this is not incompetence—it’s intentional. The goal is to break the system so that privatization seems like the only option left. This assault on Social Security mirrors a broader pattern of austerity politics and corporate greed that seeks to transfer public wealth to private hands. Yet Social Security remains one of the few programs that has never failed the American people. As Congressman John B. Larson reminds us, the program has never missed a single payment—not during 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, or the COVID-19 pandemic.1 Its administrative costs are less than one percent, and it continues to lift millions out of poverty every year. In 2023 alone, 6.2 million children—about 9 percent of all U.S. kids—received Social Security benefits, lifting nearly one million out of poverty (Teen Vogue, 2025). Without it, almost four in ten older Americans would live below the poverty line (Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, 2025).

We have a moral duty to act. We must stop the closures of Social Security field offices, restore staffing levels to meet growing demand, modernize technology to ensure accessibility for all, and safeguard data against misuse and political interference. This is about more than numbers—it’s about honoring a promise born from the Great Depression, when FDR’s Social Security Act shielded Americans from forces beyond their control. We face a similar test now.

If we fail, millions will face unnecessary hardship, economic inequality will deepen, and trust in government will erode further. The precedent will be set that the safety net itself is negotiable. But if we advocate—together—we can ensure that Social Security not only survives but thrives. Expanding benefits, lifting the payroll tax cap for the wealthy, and protecting every worker’s earned right to retire with dignity will strengthen our economy from the bottom up.

America deserves a government that works for its people — not one held hostage by Trump and his Republican enablers.

Friendly reminder: Trump and Republicans control the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives — yet they’ve chosen dysfunction over duty. They’ve deliberately driven our nation into another shutdown, weaponizing government itself to serve their extremist agenda. Trump and Republicans appear to be sabotaging the economy as it is projected the U.S. “could lose $15 billion of its growth domestic product each week the shutdown extends, with a monthlong shutdown leading to an additional 43,000 unemployed people, the Council of Economic Advisers’ warned in the memo. That damage does not account for the 1.9 million federal civilian employees who are either furloughed or working without pay.” 1

Because of Trump and Republican’s chaos, millions of working families are suffering. Nearly 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck 2, yet Trump and his allies refuse to work in a bipartisan manner to reopen the government and deliver relief.

This isn’t leadership — it’s sabotage.

Meanwhile, the wealthiest 1% own more than the bottom 93% of Americans. 3 That’s not freedom — that’s feudalism. Trump’s policies reward billionaires, corporations, and cronies while ordinary Americans are left wondering how to pay rent, buy groceries, or keep the lights on.

With so much happening so quickly, we’re launching a new series: Trump Is Sabotaging the Economy.

As you know, our daily People Power United newsletter usually breaks down an issue and offers a call to action on a wide range of topics. But some issues demand deeper, ongoing attention. Our column Freedom Over Fascism, for example, zeroes in on authoritarianism. And while we’ve touched on Trump’s economic sabotage before, the scope of the damage has grown too big to treat in passing.

That’s why we’re launching a dedicated series to track this crisis. We’re also rolling out two new additions: a section on the NO KINGS Movement and a Humanitarian Watch piece. These will live under the People Power United site and they are included with your subscription. They also complement our other newsletters—ICEbreaker News, Resist Project 2025, and Protect Our Planet. All of this is meant to equip you with information, resources, and actions to strengthen your advocacy.

Alright, let’s dive in. The economy is a massive issue, but our aim here is to keep things clear and focused on the big picture: rising prices and out-of-control costs fueled by the incompetence of Trump’s policies.

This isn’t policy—it’s a power grab. And it’s up to us to stop it.

Groceries are more expensive, housing costs are soaring, jobs are drying up, and families are drowning in debt. None of this is an accident—it’s economic sabotage.

Donald Trump and his accomplices are weakening the foundations of our economy to consolidate power and enrich the wealthy few.

From mass deportations that ripped 155,000 farmworkers1 out of the fields during peak harvest—sending food prices higher2—to construction shortages3 that worsen the housing crisis, Trump is engineering scarcity. His reckless tariff wars are a hidden tax on every family, jacking up the cost of lumber, furniture, and groceries while cutting off farmers from their biggest markets.4

Meanwhile, the core Consumer Price Index is up 3.1%5, wholesale prices are soaring6, and the University of Michigan shows consumer sentiment plunging7 as inflation fears spread. US Debt has hit a record $37 trillion8, unemployment is at a four-year high9, and July delivered a pitiful 73,000 new jobs.10

And while families struggle, Trump’s $170 billion deportation machine11 never shuts down—not even during government shutdowns. Public safety suffers as thousands of officers are diverted away from fighting terrorism, trafficking, and violent crime to serve his cruel agenda.12 Watchdogs are defunded, prosecutors fired, and our institutions are gutted to eliminate accountability.

The result? An oligarchic endgame where the wealthiest 10% now drive nearly half of all U.S. spending13, the gender pay gap is widening, and workers lose ground while billionaires tighten their grip.

A Call to Action

We cannot shrug off this economic sabotage as “chaos” or “incompetence.” It is deliberate. This isn’t mismanagement. Every policy enacted results in broken trust in our rule of law and democracy, it weakens our institutions, and it seems to enrich a tiny elite while ordinary Americans suffer.

The solution is not despair but defiance. We must demand accountability: restore oversight, protect immigrant labor that sustains our food and housing supply, roll back tariffs that punish families, and confront the corruption of power consolidation head-on.

Because this fight is bigger than groceries or gas—it’s about the survival of our rights, freedoms, rule of law, and democracy.

Unless we speak out, show up, build power, and demand accountability, Trump’s economy will leave our families struggling, our communities weaker, our democracy hollowed out, and power concentrated in the hands of the few.

I know this is hard—but I also know we have something stronger: the power of the people. When we come together, speak out, and show up, we are the force that can turn this around.
