Friends, across our neighborhoods, classrooms, workplaces, and places of worship, immigrants are part of the heartbeat of our communities. They are the teachers guiding our children, the parents working long hours to build a better future, the workers bringing life and culture to our corners, and the families who carry courage even in the face of fear.

Friends, this week, as members of People Power United, we must get loud with action. There are two real and urgent threats before us.

The first is what we are calling the Suppress America’s Voters Act (also known by Republicans as the SAVE Act) and the MEGA Act. The second threat is ICE/DHS receiving more money to add to its $190 billion slush fund, on top of the $93 billion it received from BBB earlier this year, to continue kidnapping, killing, and kleptocracy in our communities with zero accountability.

Today, we will address the Suppress America’s Voters Act (SAVE), and tomorrow we will talk about holding ICE accountable.

Republicans in Congress, with Donald Trump’s blessing, are advancing some of the most extreme voting restrictions in modern history—bills that could silence millions of lawful voters and undermine the foundation of free and fair elections. Moments like this demand clarity, courage, and collective action, because democracy only survives when the people defend it.

Power in a democracy must flow from the people. The promise of America is simple: every eligible voter deserves a free, fair, and accessible path to the ballot. Yet recent proposals like the SAVE Act, its latest revision, and the so-called MEGA Act represent a dangerous shift away from that promise. These measures are not about protecting elections. They are political maneuvers designed to energize MAGA supporters, destabilize confidence in our democratic system during a critical midterm year, and make it harder for lawful voters to participate.

The evidence is overwhelming. Repeated investigations, statewide audits, and court decisions across administrations of both parties show that voter fraud in U.S. elections is extraordinarily rare.1 Our elections already rely on paper ballots, audits, bipartisan oversight, and strict verification systems. The real threat is not fraud. The real threat is voter prevention.

When laws like the SAVE Act demand documents like passports or original birth certificates, millions of eligible Americans risk losing their voice—wives with a different last name, seniors without paperwork, people with disabilities facing bureaucratic barriers, working families lacking time or money, and communities of color long targeted by suppression. Preventing eligible citizens from voting reshapes election outcomes and concentrates power in fewer hands.

We know the tactics: closing polling places, purging voter rolls, spreading intimidation and misinformation, and erecting unnecessary barriers to participation. These strategies do not strengthen democracy. They weaken it by allowing leaders to choose their voters instead of voters choosing their leaders.

But democracy is stronger than fear. Most Americans agree on a basic truth: every eligible voter should be able to vote easily and safely. Voting is how we shape the decisions that govern our lives, protect our freedoms, and hold power accountable.

Power to the people means power to all eligible voters. Our task now is clear—defend access, expand participation to all eligible voters, and protect the freedom to vote.

We must make an unrelenting demand that every eligible voter can register, remain on the rolls, cast a ballot, and have it counted. Silence is not neutrality; silence is complicity. The moment calls for action now—mobilizing for free and fair midterm elections by showing up in our communities, protecting the vote, recruiting poll workers, holding leaders accountable, and turning out in force.

Friends, Happy New Year! My apologies for a hiccup in yesterday’s piece—the video didn’t attach as intended, so I’m sharing it with you today.

Friends, America is brave—because you are.

Real courage doesn’t always announce itself. It shows up when no one is watching. It’s choosing what’s right even when it’s uncomfortable, unpopular, or inconvenient. I have seen that courage up close, again and again, in our communities.

I saw it on the streets of America—people showing up against kings, against authoritarianism, against the lie that power belongs to the few instead of the many. I saw it as I stood with veterans in Washington, D.C., demanding Freedom Over Fascism, watching those who once wore the uniform refuse to stay silent as democracy itself was under threat. I saw that same courage when students and parents boarded buses to Tallahassee after Parkland, refusing to let grief be buried and insisting that gun safety mattered more than political convenience. I saw it in Utah, when community members showed up to protest and urge Senator Romney to vote for Trump’s impeachment—despite being told, “We don’t do that here.” They did it anyway. I saw it when thousands gathered at the Supreme Court after Roe v. Wade fell, standing shoulder to shoulder in grief, rage, and resolve—ordinary people refusing to surrender their bodies, their futures, or their rights without a fight. And for several years, I saw it outside ICE Miramar, standing with the Circle of Protection as everyday people summoned extraordinary resolve—week after week pushing back against cruelty just to secure basic human needs for those waiting in line: water, shade, a restroom. None of it was radical. All of it was brave.

America is brave because you are. And right now, we need that bravery more than ever.

The United States—and the world—need a strong America with principled leadership. Instead, we are living under the influence of a small, insecure tyrant who believes slapping his name on everything is the same as greatness. It isn’t. And while Republicans hold the majority, they have delivered little but dysfunction, putting this Congress on track to be one of the least productive since the Great Depression. That outcome isn’t accidental—it’s the result of greed, incompetence, and indifference to the people they were elected to serve.

We must also be honest with ourselves. The erosion of our rights didn’t happen overnight. It was enabled by years of disengagement—by “it’s not my problem,” “I’m too busy,” “nothing ever changes,” or “my voice doesn’t matter.” Most eligible voters still don’t participate. Corruption has been visible for a long time, and too often it was tolerated. Now it’s bolder, louder, and more dangerous.

So what do we do now?

As champions for progress, we must choose to double down on love and action—not as a weakness, but as strength. This holiday season, I encourage all of us to care for our spirits. Rest matters. Renewal matters. The year ahead will demand clarity, courage, and commitment—and it will require all of us to speak out, show up, and build the people power needed to replace corruption and greed with leadership that serves the many, not the few.

Does my activism make a difference? Is it worth my time? Absolutely—your activism matters. Here’s why:

Grassroots activism is a powerful force that can shape the direction of a nation. History has shown us that when people organize, they can drive monumental change. But change doesn’t happen in isolation—it requires collective effort. Many of us can take one or two small actions each day for advocacy, but we need more people to step up. The longer the power of the people remains on the sidelines, the stronger figures like Trump, Musk, and Putin become. If we want to protect the future of our country, we must double down on our organizing efforts to build people power in every city and every state across the nation.

We must show up, speak out, and build power to replace corrupt politicians who put their own power above the well-being of the people. By holding leaders accountable and advocating for dignity, respect, and opportunity for all, we can build an America rooted in liberty and justice—not just for the wealthy or well-connected, but for everyone.

Grassroots activism has profound impact. The energy, passion, and determination of even a small group can change the course of a nation. We’re seeing this clearly with the rise of the MAGA movement. While I vehemently oppose the Project 2025 agenda and the MAGA mission to dismantle our rights, freedoms, democracy, and rule of law, we must acknowledge their effectiveness. Across the country, MAGA activists have mobilized voters with relentless discipline, shifting political allegiances county by county. When I saw a Washington Post map from the past election showing red arrow shifts moving from Democrats to Republicans—it simply confirmed what we’ve long known: MAGA’s grassroots organizing is gaining traction, even in states once considered safely blue. And it’s worth noting that we’re seeing renewed MAGA activity since the passing of Charlie Kirk.

This didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of years of groundwork, coalition-building, and voter engagement at the local level. While Democratic and progressive leaders scramble to explain these trends, the lesson is unmistakable: grassroots activism works. And I’m not talking about last-minute GOTV (get out the vote) efforts. By the time Kamala Harris entered the race, the grassroots enthusiasm needed to energize voters was already missing. You can’t build a movement in a few weeks; it takes years of steady, people-powered organizing.

Too many democratic and progressive spaces have spent recent years debating policy differences instead of uniting around shared purpose. Yes, there are incredible coalitions doing important work—People Power United proudly partners with several. But too many lack the grassroots energy that fuels real, transformative movements. Grassroots activism is not top-down. It’s built by volunteers—ordinary people—investing their time, talent, and passion into creating a better future.

Part of the problem is that traditional organizing has often been shaped by a small group of funders or large organizations that feel disconnected from everyday people. As a result, many struggle to inspire volunteers. In contrast, true grassroots activism is born from individuals—neighbors, friends, coworkers—coming together to solve shared challenges. It’s nimble, personal, and relational. Change doesn’t begin in the halls of power; it begins in the streets, kitchens, and living rooms of people who refuse to accept injustice as normal.

So, does your activism make a difference? Absolutely. History shows that when good people do nothing, harmful forces rise. Every grassroots movement—from civil rights to women’s suffrage to environmental justice—was built through countless small actions taken by everyday people. Your efforts, no matter how modest they may seem, contribute to a much larger wave of change.

Some say one person can’t make a difference. I reject that outright. Every small action—attending a meeting, sharing information, signing a petition, having a conversation, volunteering—creates ripples. Those ripples inspire others. And together, they build momentum that can shift the direction of a nation.

We’ve watched the impact of grassroots organizing on the other side. MAGA’s movement, despite its dangerous objectives, is proof that activism matters. Now it’s our turn to harness our energy for good—to build coalitions rooted in justice, equity, passion, authenticity, and determination. When we invest in grassroots activism, we aren’t just reacting to the moment—we are shaping a future where democracy, freedom, and dignity can thrive.

Democrats launch efforts to hold ICE agents accountable

• 📊 Democratic officials at federal and state levels are launching initiatives to document alleged ICE misconduct, including New York Attorney General Letitia James opening a portal for New Yorkers to report violations and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker establishing an accountability commission to create a formal public record. Win Without War’s Know-Your-Rights billboard campaign

After Trump’s alarming remarks about using our cities as “training grounds for our military,” Win Without War is expanding its Know Your Rights billboard campaign in cities across the country. In a recent speech to top commanders, Trump claimed they have a “major part” to play in a so-called “war from within” to control American cities — a chilling statement that echoes the tactics of dictators.

That’s why Win Without War is stepping up to remind service members that they have the right and the responsibility to refuse unethical or illegal orders. Trump’s violent brand of authoritarianism and mass deportation is not what they signed up for. Weaponizing the troops against the people they’re sworn to protect won’t make our communities any safer. Attacking Americans on U.S. soil is wrong and a waste of resources needed to protect our nation from other threats. Open Letter to Speaker Johnson

Speaker Johnson,

I am writing this in response to your recent appearance on Fox and your statements that the “No Kings” rally is a “hate America” event and suggested links to “pro-Hamas” and “antifa.”

Speaker Johnson, have you forgotten this country was created by pioneers who rallied against a king and stood for liberty and justice for all — not just the wealthy, powerful, or privileged?

Let me be clear: I don’t hate America. I love this country enough to champion freedom over fascism every single day. I am not “pro-Hamas,” and if standing against fascism makes me “antifa” in your eyes, then so be it — I wear that label as a badge of honor because I believe in freedom, equality, and a democracy that answers to the people, not to kings, billionaires, or wannabe authoritarians.

What I hate is watching politicians refuse to do their elected jobs — the ones who trade compassion for cruelty, justice for corruption, and leadership for excuses. America has big, urgent problems — wealth inequality and racism are at the top of the list, followed by a housing crisis, a healthcare crisis, an education crisis, and an environmental crisis that threatens our children’s future.

And yet, instead of governing, you and your allies waste precious time dividing Americans with lies, rhetoric, and scapegoats. Friendly reminder: Trump and Republicans have had over ten years to offer a comprehensive plan for dealing with the healthcare, housing, immigration, and environmental crises — and you have no plan. Zero. Zippo. Just lies and fearmongering.

You accuse ordinary citizens — mothers, teachers, workers, veterans, and students — of hating the very country we’re trying to save. But you are wrong about who we are.

We are the mothers who work tirelessly to put food on the table, the fathers who hold down two jobs to keep a roof over our families, the abuelas and abuelos whose hands built this nation, the aunties and uncles who show up for their communities, the sisters and brothers who march for justice and equality. We are united — across age, race, gender, sexual orientation, pronouns, faiths, and professions — against the hostile takeover of our democracy by a king wannabe.

Here’s a friendly reminder: nearly 80 percent of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump or for your Project 2025 agenda to oppress the good and decent people of this country. We see through the fear. We see through the lies. And we will not be silenced.

So, Speaker Johnson, I pray that you find it within your heart to be a leader, not a follower. Lead with courage, not cruelty. Lead with compassion, not control. Lead for we the people — not for the powerful few.

Whether you stand with us or against us, we will rise.
We will rise for our children, our communities, and our future.
We will rise for America — because this is what love of country truly looks like.

We are the mothers who work tirelessly to put food on the table, the fathers who hold down two jobs to keep a roof over our families, the abuelas and abuelos whose hands built this nation, the aunties and uncles who show up for their communities, the sisters and brothers who march for justice and equality. We are united — across age, race, gender, sexual orientation, pronouns, faiths, and professions — against the hostile takeover of our democracy by a king wannabe.

Here’s a friendly reminder: nearly 80 percent of people who call America home did not vote for Donald Trump or for your Project 2025 agenda to oppress the good and decent people of this country. We see through the fear. We see through the lies. And we will not be silenced.

So, Speaker Johnson, I pray that you find it within your heart to be a leader, not a follower. Lead with courage, not cruelty. Lead with compassion, not control. Lead for we the people — not for the powerful few.

Whether you stand with us or against us, we will rise.

A Song for Our Democracy

Hi friends! Happy 40th anniversary of Les Misérables! The timeless power of its music and message — the people rising together — inspired me to create a new song and video: Do You Hear the People Healing?1 Because in these turbulent days, when so many say, “My Representative or Senator doesn’t listen,” it’s easy to feel unheard. But here’s the truth: our voices are strongest when we rise harmoniously with one purpose.

Each congressional district represents about 750,000 people (Census). Yet according to Fireside212, all of Congress received just 81 million messages in 2022 — a shockingly small number compared to the 330 million Americans they serve. That means your call, letter, and email carry far more weight than you might imagine. Every single message is a spark that can light up a movement.

So imagine this: if each of us committed to sending one letter and leaving one voicemail a day — messages that reach our three Members of Congress — that’s nearly 486 billion messages3 across 533 members of Congress. That’s people power in action. That’s the sound of democracy singing again.

Eighty-one million versus 486 billion doesn’t even count social media, town halls, or direct birddogging. This is how we move from a 24% engagement rate to a complete 100%. This is how we make government listen.

So let’s use our collective voice — not just to demand, but to heal, rebuild, and remind them who they work for: us.
