RFK Jr. Has No Business Running America’s Health System

The health and safety of the American people are not Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s personal experiment.

Our children are not test subjects. Our scientists are not disposable. Our public-health institutions are not toys for political ideologues to tear apart. And the Secretary of Health and Human Services does not get to make promises to Congress, take power, break those promises, undermine the institutions he was entrusted to lead, and expect the rest of us to look away quietly.

Congress must impeach and remove Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

And here’s the part Congress cannot pretend away:

The articles of impeachment already exist.

On December 10, 2025, Rep. Haley Stevens, joined by Rep. Eric Swalwell, introduced H.Res. 944, formally accusing Kennedy of “abuse of authority and undermining of the public health.” The House Judiciary Committee referred the resolution. 1

Stevens put it plainly when she introduced the resolution:

“Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has turned his back on science, on public health, and on the American people.” 2

She was right to demand accountability then.

What we have learned since makes Congress’s continued inaction even harder to defend.

He told senators his Samoa trip had “nothing to do with vaccines.”

Kennedy was questioned during his 2025 confirmation hearings about a 2019 trip to Samoa, months before a devastating measles outbreak there killed 83 people, most of them young children. Kennedy repeatedly told senators that his purpose for traveling there had “nothing to do with vaccines.” 3

Then reporters found the documents.

In August 2026, the Associated Press and The Guardian obtained correspondence showing that before Kennedy traveled to Samoa, he wrote to the country’s prime minister proposing that his team study what had happened with Samoa’s measles, mumps and rubella vaccines. AP reported that Kennedy’s letter used the words “vaccine” or “vaccination” eight times. 4

Kennedy was not under oath during those confirmation exchanges, and HHS has denied that he lied to Congress. Making a material false statement to Congress can be a crime even when the speaker is not under oath, although such cases are rarely prosecuted. 5

Sen. Ron Wyden responded to the revelations by calling for a criminal investigation.

His warning should ring through every hallway of Congress:

“There are consequences for lying to Congress.” 6

There should be consequences.

There must be consequences.

A cabinet secretary cannot be permitted to give lawmakers one story when seeking confirmation and then move on when documents emerge that contradict that story.

And Samoa is not the only broken promise.

Kennedy secured critical support for his confirmation from Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, a physician and chairman of the Senate health committee. Cassidy said Kennedy made commitments about vaccine policy, including a pledge to maintain the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices “without changes.” 7

Then Kennedy got the job.

On June 9, 2025, HHS announced that it was removing all 17 sitting members of that vaccine advisory committee. That is not an accusation from Kennedy’s opponents. That is what Kennedy’s own department publicly announced. 8

By June 2026, Cassidy had had enough.

“The commitments that were made to me have been violated,” Cassidy told CBS News. 9

And Cassidy issued an even more devastating warning:

“If you build public health upon a foundation of lies,” he said, adequate public health disappears. 10

This is coming from a Republican senator whose vote helped Kennedy get confirmed.

When even the senator who helped put you in office says your promises were broken and trust has been destroyed, Congress has a responsibility to listen.

Then Kennedy began dismantling pieces of America’s vaccine infrastructure.

In August 2025, Kennedy’s own Department of Health and Human Services announced that it was winding down 22 mRNA vaccine-development investments worth nearly $500 million through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, including terminating, restructuring, or canceling projects and solicitations. 11

FactCheck.org subsequently examined Kennedy’s justification for that decision and concluded that he relied on false claims about mRNA vaccines’ effectiveness and safety. 12

And the changes did not stop there.

A Reuters investigation published in July 2026 documented Kennedy’s push to reshape decades of federal vaccine policy, including efforts to reduce the childhood immunization schedule, redirect federal vaccine research, and restrict access to some vaccines. Reuters also reported that a federal judge blocked an effort by RFK Jr. to remove vaccines for six diseases from the universally recommended childhood schedule. 13

This is what power looks like when ideology is allowed to bulldoze expertise.

These are no longer posts on social media.

These are federal policies.

Federal advisory panels.

Federal research dollars.

Federal vaccine recommendations.

And real families have to live in the country those decisions create.

Meanwhile, measles is spreading across America.

According to the CDC’s August 14 update, 2,566 confirmed measles cases had already been reported in the United States in 2026 as of August 13. 14

The same CDC data show that MMR vaccination coverage among U.S. kindergartners fell from 95.2% in the 2019-2020 school year to 92.5% in 2024-2025, leaving an estimated 286,000 kindergartners at risk during that school year. 15

We should be crystal clear about what those numbers do and do not prove.

Kennedy did not single-handedly create America’s declining vaccination rates, and it would be irresponsible to claim that he personally caused every measles outbreak.

But the Secretary of Health and Human Services has one job above all others:

Protect the public’s health.

When vaccine-preventable disease is spreading, America needs a health secretary who strengthens confidence in evidence-based medicine, protects scientific independence and gives families reliable information.

Instead, we have a secretary whose record has become so alarming that scientists themselves are demanding his removal.

Nearly 700 members of America’s National Academies have backed impeachment.

In early 2026, 687 members of the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering, writing in their individual capacities, endorsed the articles of impeachment. Ten Nobel laureates signed. 16

Their letter cited cuts to lifesaving research, restrictions on vaccines, removal of experts from CDC advisory panels, and misrepresentation of scientific findings among their reasons for supporting impeachment. 17

These are not internet trolls.

These are not anonymous partisan operatives.

These are scientists, physicians, researchers, and some of the country’s most accomplished scientific minds.

And they are sounding the alarm.

Congress needs to stop pretending it cannot hear it.

This is what accountability is for.

Impeachment should never be casual.

But neither should handing someone control over institutions responsible for disease prevention, medical research, vaccines, health insurance, food and drug safety, and the health of hundreds of millions of people.

At some point, oversight without consequences becomes permission.

There comes a moment when another hearing is not enough.

Another sternly worded letter is not enough.

Another senator expressing disappointment is not enough.

Another scientist sounding an alarm is not enough.

The articles have been introduced.

The evidence has grown.

The warnings have multiplied.

Now Congress must act.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. does not own the Department of Health and Human Services.

Donald Trump does not own it.

We do.

These institutions belong to the people they are supposed to serve.

And when an official entrusted with enormous power betrays that trust, Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to hold that official accountable.

We don’t have to accept chaos as governance.

We don’t have to accept conspiracy as public policy.

We don’t have to surrender science to ideology.

And we sure as hell don’t have to quietly watch while the institutions protecting our families are torn apart.

Demand accountability.

Demand a vote.

Demand that Congress protect the American people and remove Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from power.
