Friends, earlier this week we launched our five-part series Political Violence Is a Threat to Us All. Today we pause to acknowledge Constitution Day.
America's Constitution begins with three bold words: "We the People." But under Donald Trump and today's Republican Party, it's clear who they really mean: "We the Privileged. We the Billionaires. We the Untouchable Few." From stacking the courts to trying to rig elections by gerrymandering states to handing tax cuts to the ultra-rich, Trump and his enablers are not just ignoring the Constitution—they are rewriting the rules to consolidate power and lock the rest of us out. They are exploiting the very system meant to protect all Americans and turning it into a fortress of greed, bigotry, and authoritarian control.
This isn't politics as usual. This is a coordinated, dangerous, and deliberate attempt to replace constitutional democracy with a government of the elite, by the elite, and for the elite. Trump's second administration represents the most serious constitutional challenge in modern American history. His relentless disregard for democracy and the rule of law endangers the rights and freedoms the Constitution was designed to protect.
Trump has weaponized the DOJ, the FBI, and federal agencies against perceived opponents, and ordinary Americans—eroding the safeguards that protect our democracy. He has defied court orders, exploited emergency powers, and bypassed oversight, setting dangerous precedents that put at risk every American's protection under the law. When checks and balances weaken, we lose fair treatment, the power of our vote, and the strength of our voice.
Selective "Constitutionalism" Is a Fraud
Trump and MAGA Republicans love to wave the Constitution when it shields white supremacy, guns, and corporate money. But when it comes to defending the rights of women, immigrants, LGBTQIA+ people, or peaceful protestors? Suddenly, the Constitution is "optional." They cheer bans on books and abortions but call mask mandates "tyranny." They censor school curricula, and fantasize about jailing political enemies. This is not constitutional fidelity—it's selective enforcement for political gain. And it's how democracies die: slowly, legally, and with the Constitution as a prop.
The Constitution Doesn't Defend Itself—We Have To
What's happening is not a misunderstanding. It's a strategy. If we don't name it and and call it out, "We the People" will become a hollow phrase, stripped of meaning by billionaires, corrupt courts, and extremists who treat the Constitution like a tool for personal power. But here's the truth: the Constitution is not theirs to rewrite. It’s ours to protect and defend. That defense starts now—with education, organization, and people power action.
