Urgent call to action: Tell Speaker Johnson: Hands Off Social Security
Expand Social Security & Tax the Rich
Friends,
Social Security is not a luxury. It is not a handout. It is not a political bargaining chip for billionaires, lobbyists, or extremists who want to balance budgets on the backs of seniors, people with disabilities, widows, children, and working families.
Yet Speaker Mike Johnson just made it clear: if Republicans win again in November, cuts to Social Security are on the table.
Check out this reporting from Aaron Parnas, then read below to see how we can take action to protect Social Security and hold our leaders accountable.
Social Security is a promise.
It is a promise that after a lifetime of work, people should not be abandoned into poverty. It is a promise that when disability strikes, families are not left with nothing. It is a promise that when a worker dies, their loved ones are not completely left behind. It is one of the most successful anti-poverty programs in American history, and instead of protecting and expanding it, too many politicians are trying to weaken it, cap it, privatize it, or cut it.
That is unacceptable.
The problem is not that seniors have too much. The problem is that billionaires and ultra-wealthy corporations pay too little into the system compared to the wealth they hoard. Working people pay Social Security taxes on every dollar they earn up to the wage cap, while the richest people stop paying into Social Security after a certain amount of income. That means a nurse, teacher, warehouse worker, or cashier can end up paying Social Security taxes on a larger share of their income than a billionaire.
That is not fairness. That is rigged.
Instead of capping benefits, Congress should scrap the sweetheart deal for the rich and make millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share. Instead of forcing seniors to stretch checks that barely cover rent, medicine, groceries, and utilities, we should expand Social Security so people can retire with dignity. Instead of using fear to justify cuts, lawmakers should strengthen the program for today’s retirees, tomorrow’s retirees, people with disabilities, surviving spouses, and children who depend on it.
We are the wealthiest nation on Earth. We can afford dignity. We can afford security. We can afford care. What we cannot afford is a political class that protects billionaires while telling seniors to sacrifice more.
This is a moral test. Do we protect the people who built this country, or do we protect the wealth of those already sitting on more than they could ever spend?
Congress needs to hear us loud and clear: Do not cap Social Security benefits. Make billionaires pay their fare share. Expand Social Security.

Why the Grassroots Resistance Can’t Wait
People Power United members believe change is possible because we have seen ordinary people rise, organize, and be a force for progress. Real change does not come from waiting politely, staying quiet, or hoping those in power suddenly grow a conscience. It comes when people speak out, show up, and demand action—because our communities and families cannot wait, and every moment we delay gives injustice more room to tighten its grip on our communities.
