Take Action» Tell Congress: get foreign money out of U.S. elections.
Friends,
Democracy depends on one simple promise: voters should know who is trying to influence their voice, fostering trust and confidence in the process.
But today, that promise is under pressure.
Imagine discovering that a corporation spending millions to influence an American election is significantly owned by foreign investors.
That is not transparency. That is a warning sign that should concern all of us about the integrity of our elections.
Federal law prohibits foreign nationals from directly contributing to U.S. elections. Yet questions remain about how foreign ownership, hidden financial networks, and corporate structures can create pathways for outside influence in American politics.
After Citizens United, dark money reshaped American elections, allowing unlimited outside spending to flood our political system. At the same time, foreign influence efforts have evolved beyond traditional propaganda. The Brennan Center has documented concerns that foreign adversaries use social media manipulation, deceptive online content, and emerging AI tools to spread false information, deepen divisions, and undermine trust in elections, underscoring the urgent risks foreign influence poses to democracy.1
This week brought another reminder of why transparency matters.
Reports this week revealed that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, described as close to Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward celebrations surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s Bahamas wedding.2 House Oversight Democrats have opened an inquiry, and President Trump said his son would repay Kremlev.34
The accountability questions are impossible to ignore. Why was a Putin-linked Russian businessman paying for lavish celebrations for the sitting U.S. president’s son? What is the relationship? What was the full value of the benefit, and has every dollar actually been repaid?
And this is bigger than one wedding. As foreign influence campaigns target American democracy, transparency matters.
Who has influence? Who is paying? And who gets a seat at the table when decisions affecting Americans are made?
The proposed Get Foreign Money Out of U.S. Elections Act seeks to address one piece of that challenge by restricting political spending by companies with significant foreign ownership. Supporters argue that stronger safeguards are needed to prevent foreign investors from influencing U.S. elections through corporate structures, highlighting the need for legislative support to protect election integrity.
We know democracy cannot survive in the shadows. We must defend every voter’s right to sunlight, transparency, and the truth.
Hidden money should never decide the future of our democracy. Voters deserve transparency, accountability, and a voice that cannot be bought. Take Action» Tell Congress: get foreign money out of U.S. elections.
American elections should be decided by American voters—not multinational corporations, secret donors, or foreign investors.
