A nation reveals its values by what it funds, what it protects, and who it is willing to leave behind. Right now, the United States continues to pour enormous resources into war and militarism while millions of people here at home still struggle to see a doctor, fill a prescription, or pay a hospital bill. Families are forced to ration insulin, delay cancer screenings, skip mental health care, and live under the crushing weight of medical debt. That is not strength. That is a moral failure.
And we have been here before. Last year, we stood at the Capitol with fellow activists to demand what every person deserves: healthcare, not warfare.
We stood alongside people in wheelchairs, people crying out for the right to live with dignity, people refusing to stay silent while Congress threatened healthcare funding yet again. Some were arrested simply for demanding Medicaid, for fighting for their lives, for insisting that disabled Americans, elders, children, and working families matter more than bombs, war budgets, and handouts to the wealthy. That moment was a warning, and it was also a promise.
We were championing healthcare, not warfare then, and we are still championing it now.

Healthcare is not a luxury. It is not a privilege reserved for the rich or the lucky. It is a human need and a public good. No one should have to beg for care. No parent should have to choose between rent and a prescription. No senior should have to fear getting sick because treatment could mean bankruptcy. No person with a disability should have to plead with lawmakers to recognize their humanity. When people are denied care, the damage ripples outward through families, communities, and generations. When care is treated like a commodity instead of a right, suffering becomes policy.
We are constantly told that war spending is urgent, necessary, and untouchable. But what could be more urgent than keeping people alive? What could be more necessary than prenatal care, emergency care, prescription drugs, home care, and mental health treatment? Real security is not just measured in missiles, tanks, and military contracts. Real security is knowing your child can see a doctor, your parent can afford treatment, and your neighbor can survive an illness without financial ruin. The barrier is not scarcity. It is political will.

It is a demand for a country that chooses care over cruelty and people over profit. Last year, we raised our voices at the Capitol. This year, we are still raising them because the truth has not changed: our families matter more than fighter jets, our communities matter more than war machines, and our future depends on what we are willing to fight for together. Our voices are our power. Our stories are our strength. Our collective action is how we win.
