Not by making friends — no, that would be conventional — but by giving everyone everywhere a common enemy: the United States.
Thanks to a dazzling array of tariffs that slapped every trading partner from Anchorage to Zanzibar, Trump has proven that nothing says “team building” like threatening levies on decades-old allies just because they exist. Business leaders, economists, and that guy who sells hot dogs on Times Square all agree: tariffs are raising prices on everything here in the US.
Meanwhile, Trump’s approach to Venezuela has inspired unity in the world. First came a naval buildup and a series of strikes on boats the U.S. claimed were tied to drug traffickers — a narrative so subtle that some experts wondered if the “drug cartels” might actually just be fishermen. Then came the bold climax of international relations: the U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and flew him to the U.S. for trial.
Critics called it “kidnapping” and in cafes worldwide they called it “absolutely unhinged” in several languages. Regardless of phrasing, Maduro’s removal (and alleged oil diversion) became a UN Security Council topic, uniting governments in equal parts outrage.
Elsewhere, leaders are quietly whispering together and forging new trade deals that explicitly exclude the U.S. Trade blocs once reliant on American markets are now asking existential questions like, “Wait, are we better off without him?” while passing notes saying “yes.”
Back home, Trump’s flirtations with invoking military force against domestic unrest (seriously) are making the country look exactly like every dystopian novel you pretended to read in high school. State governments, citizens, and people around the world are collectively thinking: “Is this how North Korea does it?”
And no grand unification effort would be complete without Trump’s renewed fascination with taking over Greenland, a sovereign territory, as if international borders were just lightly enforced suggestions. Denmark, Europe, and much of the Arctic community found themselves suddenly aligned in collective disbelief, bonding over the shared experience of having to say, “No, seriously, this is not how diplomacy works.” Once again, Trump has managed to turn a bizarre fantasy into a global team-building exercise — just not for the United States.
So congratulations, President Trump: the world is united — not with the United States, not by friendship, not by shared values, but by a strange, awe-inspiring, global consensus that says, “Well — at least we’re not them.”
And while all of this may feel like a faraway geopolitical circus, the bill comes due at home. Trade wars raise prices — for food, fuel, and everyday goods — while retaliation kills jobs tied to exports and manufacturing. Inflation tightens its grip as tariffs ripple through supply chains, driving up the costs of housing materials, groceries, and energy. Health care costs rise as medical supplies and drugs are caught up in global disputes. Retirement accounts wobble as markets recoil from instability. National security erodes when allies stop sharing intelligence and start planning around us instead of with us. This isn’t strength. It’s self-inflicted isolation — and we all pay the price for every reckless move Trump and his cronies make.
Authoritarian chaos abroad always becomes economic pain at home — and the people always pay first.
