Keep Trump’s Ego Off Our Coins and Currency

Donald Trump wants his face minted onto a new $1 coin and his signature printed across future paper currency.1 This is not patriotism. It is presidential propaganda paid for by the public—a taxpayer-backed monument to one man’s ego. America’s money belongs to the people, not Trump, the Republican Party, or whoever happens to occupy the White House. The Treasury is a public institution, not Trump’s personal gift shop, campaign billboard, or branding department.
The U.S. Mint has begun producing a $1 coin featuring President Trump’s likeness for America’s 250th anniversary. The Treasury has also announced plans to place President Trump’s signature on future U.S. paper currency.
Our money belongs to the public. It should not be used as a political branding tool for any sitting president or political party.
U.S. currency should reflect the nation and the democratic institutions we share, not the personal image of one leader. The Treasury should protect the integrity of public symbols and serve the people with neutrality. Public institutions should honor the nation, not flatter one man’s ego.
America’s currency is not Trump merchandise.
It is not campaign memorabilia. It is not a taxpayer-funded billboard. It is not an official government tribute to the man who currently controls the executive branch.
Our money belongs to all of us.
This controversy also raises serious legal questions that Congress cannot ignore.
In 1866, Congress enacted a prohibition against placing the portrait or likeness of a living person on federal bonds, securities, notes, and fractional or postal currency.2 The restriction reflected a basic American principle: public money should not be used to glorify living political leaders.
That principle separates a republic from a monarchy.
Trump’s Treasury Department is now relying on the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act to justify placing Trump on the new $1 coin.3 That law authorized special coins for America’s 250th anniversary and explicitly prohibited portraits of living people on the reverse side.
Trump’s image is being placed on the obverse—the front.
Treasury may call that permission. The rest of us should call it what it looks like: a disputed loophole being stretched to accomplish something federal law and American tradition have long rejected.
When an administration must rely on legal hair-splitting to place the sitting president’s face on public money, Congress has an obligation to shut the loophole down.
The Change Corruption Act, S. 34084, introduced by Senators Jeff Merkley and Catherine Cortez Masto, would establish a clear national standard:
“No United States currency may feature the likeness of a living or sitting President.”

Congress should pass the bill and strengthen it to make clear that the prohibition covers every image, likeness, portrait, name, and signature placed on every form of United States paper currency and coinage.
This cannot become a partisan loophole that disappears whenever a different party controls the White House.
No Republican president should appear on public money while in office. No Democratic president should appear on public money while in office. No independent, future president, or self-important politician should be permitted to use the Treasury as a personal marketing department.
America’s 250th anniversary should celebrate the people.
It should honor the generations who organized for independence, abolished slavery, expanded voting rights, built worker protections, demanded civil rights, defended equality, served their communities, and pushed America closer to the promise of liberty and justice for all.
Instead, Trump is using the 250th anniversary to mint a monument to Trump.
That is not patriotism. It is vanity backed by government power.
Public institutions should serve the country with neutrality. They should not be forced to flatter the ego of the person temporarily occupying the Oval Office.
Presidents are public servants. They are not kings. They are not monarchs. They are not entitled to place their faces and signatures on the money carried by hundreds of millions of people.
Congress must pass the Change Corruption Act, close the Treasury’s disputed loophole, and stop the production or release of currency featuring the signature or image of any living or sitting president.
Take action now. Presidents are public servants, not royalty. They do not get to stamp their faces or signatures onto the money in our pockets. Our currency belongs to the people—not Trump.
