Trump says he won't fire Powell—don't believe him for a second.

This afternoon, as markets briefly tumbled, Trump rushed out a statement claiming it was "doubtful" that he would fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell shortly.¹ All of this was in response to breaking news by the New York Times “Trump Has Draft of Letter to Fire Fed Chair. He Asked Republicans if He Should Send It.”²

Sound familiar?

It should. Because if there's one thing we know about Donald Trump, it's that he lies. Constantly. Brazenly. And always with an agenda.

The Washington Post documented over 30,000 lies (they called them falsehoods) during Trump's first term—an average of 21 daily.³ And now, Trump and his complicit group of concentration camp makers are trying to lull the country into complacency again while plotting to undermine the independence of the Federal Reserve, one of the last safeguards against authoritarian economic manipulation.

As I began writing our upcoming deep dive on the Powell situation (hitting your inbox tomorrow), it became clear that this isn't just about one job or agency. It's about power. Control. And Trump's obsession with removing any guardrail that keeps him from turning the U.S. economy into a personal fiefdom.

So tomorrow, we're releasing a piece that breaks it all down—why Trump's threats to the Fed matter, how they could tank our economy and deepen inequality, and how we push back. But to understand the danger, you first need to understand the pattern:

➤ On Immigration

• ”Trump has made at least 560 statements connecting immigrants to criminality. According to a consistent, overwhelming amount of criminology research, immigrants to the United States — both legal and undocumented — have committed less crime than native-born Americans, going all the way back to the 1870s.” ⁴ Our country just added more money to ICE’s budget to ramp up more terror on our community.

➤ On Inflation

• Trump Falsely claimed in April that grocery prices “are down” and “WAY DOWN.” Grocery prices had continued to increase since he took office – and the jump from February to March, about 0.49%, was the biggest one-month increase since October 2022. ⁵ Trump’s tariffs are driving up costs for everyday goods, and just when people need help the most, essential programs are getting cut. It’s getting harder and harder for struggling Americans to catch a break. ⁶

➤ On Ukraine

• Trump blamed Zelensky for starting the war with Russia which was not true. ⁷ The US has gone from being a world leader to a world joke.

➤ On Medicaid

• Trump promised not to cut it, then signed a bill slashing over $1 trillion from health care and pushing millions off coverage. ⁸

Trump's entire political strategy is bait and switch: promise the people what they want, do the opposite in office, and flood the airwaves with lies to cover it up.

Look no further than Project 2025.

He swore, "I've never read it. I never will." ⁹

Now? He's appointed several Project 2025 authors to influential roles. ¹⁰

"I'm not an extremist at all,’ says Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. He disavows Project 2025, saying the authors of the text are part of the far-right.”¹¹ Now he's signing executive orders pulled straight from its playbook.

Trump lies to voters—then turns around and implements the exact authoritarian agenda he pretended to reject.

And the Epstein files? Another betrayal.

He said he'd release them. Then the DOJ claimed there's no client list or additional files to be released. Trump told supporters to "move on." His allies are now calling him out for using the issue as a political prop—and then burying the truth. ¹²¹³

So when Trump says he won't fire Powell, don't breathe a sigh of relief…
