Big Tech profits from our attention while working people pay their share. It’s time for states to tax digital advertising and invest in communities.

Do you know what it’s called when a company sells to your community and then refuses to contribute to that community?
It’s called corporate freeloading.
Working people pay their share. Seniors pay their share. The corner store pays its share. Why should some of the richest technology companies in the world get a different deal?
Every day, giant tech companies make enormous amounts of money selling digital ads targeted at us—our neighborhoods, our interests, our clicks, and our attention.
Meanwhile, families are stretching every paycheck. Seniors on fixed incomes are watching every dollar. Local businesses contribute to the communities where they operate.
Big Tech should contribute too.
Pennsylvania is showing America what that could look like. Its House has passed legislation extending the state’s gross-receipts tax to digital advertising revenue. 1
Think about how backward our tax system has become. Depending on the state, a magazine you buy at the store may be subject to sales tax. Yet advertising—the financial engine behind enormous digital platforms—remains exempt from sales taxes in most states. 2

And we’re talking about serious money.
The nonpartisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy estimates that if states modernized their tax codes to include advertising, they could collectively raise roughly $16 billion to $27 billion every year.3 That is money states could invest in schools, roads, healthcare, tax relief, and other community priorities.
Meanwhile, more than half of U.S. advertising dollars now flow through just three enormous companies: Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon.
Sen. Bernie Sanders put the larger principle plainly:
“The wealthiest people in America must start paying their fair share of taxes.”
Exactly.
If Big Tech makes billions selling access to our attention, our data, and our communities, why shouldn’t some of that wealth come back to the communities making those profits possible?
Pennsylvania doesn’t have to be the exception.
It can be the beginning.

You’re invited to stand with people from across the country at the March on Washington: Defend the Vote on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 8 AM ET at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Hosted by Reverend Al Sharpton, the National Action Network, and the Drum Major Institute, and joined by Martin Luther King III and other civil rights leaders, this historic gathering will mark the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
