As America marks its 250th anniversary, we have to ask ourselves an important question: Will our country finally live up to its promises, or will we allow politicians who serve wealth, prejudice, and power to pull us backward?
Throughout our history, progress has come from ordinary people who refused to give up. People organized their communities, marched, made sacrifices, spoke out, and kept pushing America closer to its ideals. Freedom, justice, and equality expanded because people were willing to show up and demand better.
Now it is our turn.
On Friday, August 28, 2026, people from across the country will gather at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., for the March on Washington: Defend the Vote. Thousands more will take part from their homes and communities by watching the livestream.
Convened by the National Action Network and the Drum Major Institute and co-chaired by Reverend Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III, and Arndrea Waters King, the march will mark the 63rd anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
We will honor that history, but we are not gathering only to look back.
This is a call to action.
The march will focus on three urgent priorities:
Voting Rights. Economic Dignity. Affordability.
Together, we will call for a multiracial and multigenerational democracy where every person has dignity, safety, opportunity, equality, and a voice in the decisions that shape their life.
The work of democracy is not finished, and we refuse to surrender the progress generations before us worked so hard to achieve.
We are not gathering simply to remember history. We are gathering to make it.
This peaceful, nonpartisan, interfaith, and intergenerational event is open to people from every community. You can join us in Washington, D.C., watch the livestream, volunteer, or help your organization become an official partner.
The March on Washington: Defend the Vote is rooted in nonviolence and the exercise of our constitutional rights. We do not condone violence, and we do not encourage anyone to break the law. Like generations before us, we will vote, speak out, assemble peacefully, organize, rally, and protest to protect our freedoms, uphold the rule of law, and defend our democracy.
Together, we will protect the right to vote, advance economic dignity, demand relief for working families, and continue building an America that lives up to its promise of liberty and justice for all.

No march, organization, candidate, or leader can protect our democracy alone. That responsibility belongs to every one of us. We each have a role to play: register voters, check your own registration, make a voting plan, volunteer, support local organizers, meet with lawmakers, organize peaceful actions outside congressional offices, and sign up for the March on Washington. Invite your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, congregation, union, and community groups. Bring five people with you—and ask them to bring five more.
The people working to weaken our democracy are hoping we will grow tired, turn against one another, become distracted, or decide that showing up does not matter. We must prove them wrong.
This is our country. These are our communities. This is our democracy. We will not hand them over to cruelty, corruption, or authoritarianism. We will show up, speak out, organize, defend the vote, and build the people power needed to move America toward freedom, dignity, justice, progress, and power to the people.
