Friends, at the Munich Security Conference this past weekend, Secretary of State Marco Rubio tried to wrap modern geopolitics in the warm, nostalgic language of a single “Western civilization.” He declared, “We are part of one civilization… bound… by shared history, Christian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry.” The words may have sounded comforting to some ears, but they rang hollow in the world we actually live in.
Start with the facts. In Europe’s three largest economies, Britain, France, and Germany, fewer than half of residents now identify as Christian, according to the Bertelsmann Stiftung. The religious unity Rubio invoked simply does not exist. Nor is there a universal shared language. Roughly half of the European Union speaks English as a foreign language, not as evidence of some ancient civilizational bond.
The America Rubio and Trump imagine no longer exists, if it ever did. We are a melting pot of many faiths, cultures, heritages, languages, and ancestries.
Rubio’s speech was not analysis. It was mythology, political storytelling designed to divide the present by romanticizing a past that never truly was.
This pattern is not new for Rubio, he has increasingly chosen rhetoric that narrows belonging instead of expanding it. Rather than confronting real global instability, democratic backsliding, or humanitarian crises, he reaches for cultural nostalgia and identity politics dressed up as strategy. That may win applause in partisan rooms, but it does nothing to strengthen alliances, defend democracy, or protect ordinary people from abuse of power. Leadership requires honesty about the present, not fairy tales about the past.
And while Rubio lectures allies about heritage and identity, the United States is facing something far more urgent: government abuse of power at home.
Let’s say this plainly, for the fearmongers like Trump, Rubio, Miller, Bondi, and the rest of the cult of obedience:
We want safe borders.
We want strong communities.
We want dignity and respect for everyone.
We want opportunity, fairness, and real immigration reform grounded in law.
No one is asking for violent criminals to enter this country. But the most immediate threat to American safety and freedom is not desperate families seeking refuge. It is the conduct of those in power.
Silencing opposition voices is criminal.
Ignoring the slaughter of Alexi Pretti, Renee Nicole Good, and all who have died in detention is criminal.
Ignoring court orders is criminal.
Profiting $1.4 billion from the presidency is criminal.
Stealing Social Security information is criminal.
Disappearing human beings into foreign prisons after judges forbid it is criminal.
That is not national security. It is authoritarianism. It is fascism wrapped in patriotic symbols. And when leaders like Rubio stay silent, excuse it, or redirect attention toward cultural grievances instead of constitutional violations, that silence becomes complicity.
This is where due process comes in, not as an abstract legal theory but as the beating heart of democracy. Protected by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, due process guarantees fair treatment under the law for every person in the United States. Notice that it says in the United States; it does not say born in the United States or a citizen of the United States. Before the government can take your liberty, your livelihood, or your future, it must provide notice, evidence, and a chance to be heard.
In everyday life, this principle is everywhere.
You cannot be fired without explanation and recourse.
A student cannot be expelled without knowing the charges.
A ticket can be challenged in court.
An accused person has the right to counsel and the presumption of innocence.
Strip those protections away, and freedom collapses overnight. Imagine being jailed, deported, or punished without a hearing or proof. That is not merely unjust. It is profoundly un American.
So this moment is not truly about immigration, religion, or even foreign policy rhetoric. It is about power. It is about whether leaders like Marco Rubio can erode fundamental rights while distracting the public with myths of civilizational unity. Rubio’s speech in Munich will fade, but the consequences of abandoning constitutional principles will not. History will not remember who invoked heritage the loudest. It will remember who defended democracy when it was hardest.
Will we remain a nation of laws, or become a nation ruled by leaders who believe themselves above them?
Hope lies in the answer we choose.
We must rise, not in hatred, but in courage. I see your courage.
And when people stand together to defend the law, no senator, no president, and no speech full of empty nostalgia can stop democracy from living.
