While an out of control war wages on in the middle East, Trump is also looking towards Cuba. Cuba is not Donald Trump’s to threaten, punish, or “take.” It is not a trophy for his ego, a target for his cruelty, or a stage for another reckless regime change fantasy. But that is exactly where this is headed if Congress refuses to act.
Trump has already spent months tightening an illegal oil embargo that has pushed Cuba deeper into blackouts, food shortages, water scarcity, and widespread human suffering. This is not some abstract foreign policy dispute. Real people are paying the price. Families are living without reliable electricity. Communities are struggling to access food and clean water. Sick people, elders, and children are being forced to endure pain and instability because Trump is using an entire population as leverage.
That is not leadership. That is collective punishment.
After visiting Cuba, Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Jonathan Jackson described what Trump has done as “cruel collective punishment” and “effectively an economic bombing of the infrastructure of the country.”1 They were right to say it. When a U.S. president deliberately fuels deprivation and suffering to force political outcomes, that is not diplomacy. It is abuse of power wrapped in the language of dominance.
And now the danger is growing.
Trump has reportedly talked about wanting to “take” Cuba and has demanded the removal of Cuba’s president.2 That is not peace. That is not negotiation. That is the language of imperial arrogance and war. It is the same lawless mindset that has already brought devastation to other nations, endangered civilians, wasted billions, and pushed the United States deeper into moral and constitutional crisis.

The American people are exhausted by this pattern. We are sick of endless war, sick of manufactured enemies, and sick of presidents acting like Congress is optional and the Constitution is disposable. Trump is overriding democratic limits to wreak havoc across the world. He has already escalated violence and instability in multiple countries, while treating human life like collateral damage and taxpayer money like his private war chest. Now Cuba is in the crosshairs.
Congress cannot sit on the sidelines while another disaster is set in motion.
The Constitution gives Congress the authority to declare war for a reason. No president should be allowed to drag this country into military aggression by impulse, threat, or political theater. If Trump is preparing another illegal regime change war, Congress must move now to stop it. A war powers resolution is not symbolic. It is a necessary line of defense against authoritarian overreach and another catastrophic abuse of power.3
Congress must act now to end the devastating oil embargo, reject military aggression, and block Trump from launching yet another illegal war.
