No More ICE Warehouses in Our Communities

People power is rising to stop ICE’s warehouse expansion plans and defend communities from mass detention, secrecy, abuse, and cruelty.

Friends,

ICE’s detention expansion is not policy. It is a moral emergency and a deliberate assault on our communities. The Trump administration is already locking up more than 70,000 people and is openly pushing to cage more than 100,000 at a time. Now comes the next horror: warehouse camps that could hold as many as 92,600 people across the country. That is not public safety. That is mass cruelty by design.

These warehouse schemes are especially vile because they treat human beings like cargo. Parents, siblings, workers, neighbors, and loved ones could be packed into makeshift industrial spaces built to store products, not protect life. Cutting people off from family, legal support, and community oversight will only fuel more abuse, more neglect, more illness, and more death. A bigger cage does not make cruelty humane. It only makes that cruelty easier to hide.

The danger does not stop at the warehouse doors. These facilities are not built with the water, sewage, and sanitation systems needed to hold thousands of people. Disease can spread fast. Local infrastructure can be overwhelmed. Nearby communities can be forced to carry the public health consequences. Once again, working-class communities and communities of color are being told to absorb the damage from a system built on fear and exploitation.

And let’s tell the truth about what is driving this. Corporations stand to profit by selling or leasing warehouse space to ICE and turning human suffering into a business model. ICE recently bought a Utah warehouse for about $145 million even though it was assessed at roughly $97 million.¹ That is obscene. People are not inventory. They are not objects to be processed, stored, and discarded for cash.

But communities across the country are pushing back, and that matters. Communities from Utah to Minnesota, from Oklahoma to Virginia and Mississippi, have organized, resisted, and stopped these projects. They are demanding schools, healthcare, housing, clean water, and real investment instead of cages and secrecy. They are proving that organized people can beat organized cruelty.

This moment also calls on us to remember. Our country has already lived through the shame of using makeshift sites to incarcerate Japanese Americans in the 1940s. It was wrong then. It is wrong now. We do not honor that history with silence. We honor it by rising up and refusing to let it happen again.
