Why We Stand With the Southern Poverty Law Center
Friends, here at People Power United we stand with the Southern Poverty Law Center because we stand with civil rights, human dignity, and the people who refuse to let hate rule this country.
The SPLC represents the best of America: the America that confronts white supremacy instead of excusing it, defends vulnerable communities instead of scapegoating them, and believes every person should be able to live, love, vote, work, study, travel, and simply be themselves without fear, hate, or discrimination.
That is exactly why Donald Trump and his administration are targeting civil rights organizations.
Trump’s justice department indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center on what many would label as “bogus” charges.1 In fact, Attorney General Todd Blanche held a press conference about the charges and said “The SPLC is manufacturing racism to justify its existence,” he said on Tuesday afternoon.”2 Excuse me but that is a BS statement. It is another attempt by the Trump administration to gaslight Americans into believing that racism does not exist.
When someone says racism does not exist, ask them why Black households earn about 61 cents and Hispanic households about 77 cents for every dollar earned by White households; why Black and Hispanic homeownership rates are 44.2% and 48.7% compared with 75.1% for White households; and why only about 29.6% of Black adults and 21% of Hispanic adults hold a bachelor’s degree or higher compared with 38.6% of White adults. Racism is not just personal hatred; it is a repeated, measurable pattern of unequal access to education, income, homeownership, and power, including a Fortune 500 C-suite where only 16% of functional leadership roles are held by ethnically diverse leaders. 3
This is not about law and order. This is about power. This is about an administration trying to rewrite civil rights so that protections created to defend people of color, immigrants, LGBTQIA+ people, women, workers, people with disabilities, and religious minorities can be twisted into weapons against them.
For more than 50 years, the Southern Poverty Law Center has done dangerous, necessary work. It has documented hate and violence4, taken on the Klan, exposed white supremacy, challenged bigotry, and defended communities under threat. Its offices were firebombed. Its staff has faced credible threats.
And now, once again, the people exposing extremism are being treated as the enemy.
We reject that.
We do not stand with an administration that pardons insurrectionists and treats January 6 extremists like heroes. We do not stand with leaders who excuse political violence while attacking the civil rights organizations trying to protect people from hate. We do not stand with politicians who want to erase history, normalize cruelty, and make dissent feel dangerous.
We stand with the people who train poll workers.
We stand with the people who fight discrimination.
We stand with the people who protect the right to protest.
We stand with the people who answer crisis calls, defend families, challenge hate groups, and refuse to let fascism walk into our communities unopposed.
When civil rights organizations are targeted, the rest of us are being warned to stop exposing hate, defending vulnerable communities, organizing, and telling the truth. Our answer is no. Speaking out is not a crime. Defending civil rights is not a crime. Civil rights work is democracy work, community safety work, and freedom work. The Southern Poverty Law Center is not perfect because no institution is, but its mission, history, and courage matter. Standing with SPLC means standing with multiracial democracy and every community that depends on civil rights protections to survive and thrive.
People Power United believes in freedom over fascism, progress over fear, and power to the people. We stand with SPLC, we stand with civil rights organizations, and we ask our members to keep showing up against hate and extremism. Speak out. Show up. Build power. Donate to SPLC if you are able. Silence is a choice. Solidarity is too. We choose solidarity.

Why the Grassroots Resistance Can’t Wait
People Power United members believe change is possible because we have seen ordinary people rise, organize, and be a force for progress. Real change does not come from waiting politely, staying quiet, or hoping those in power suddenly grow a conscience. It comes when people speak out, show up, and demand action—because our communities and families cannot wait, and every moment we delay gives injustice more room to tighten its grip on our communities.
