In this community we will always speak out against ageism. If you see something, say something! We must advocate against ageism and promote people’s abilities.
People advocating more sustainable urban life are actually saying *everybody* should ride a bike. I agree we could greatly downsize our vehicles, but there is a widespread ignorance about the physical needs of elderly & disabled people. Some degree of independant mobility is an emotional need, too. To have to hire someone to deliever every bulky object or try to carry it on mass transit sounds like hell.

This topic has not been breached in a world of many ism's, but baby boomers are not strangers at fighting for change. I'm 74 years old and live in a senior building that is being mismanaged and there are vulnerable adults here. Those of us that are healthier have taken on the issues of mismanagement and slowly, with the collective wisdom we share, we are about about to take on the giant. My moto has been "Don't mess with old hippies".
As a teenager, I definitely agree that ageism is a huge problem. But I can’t say I’m thrilled about Biden as president at all. Not just because of his age, but I do find it ironic that the average age in the country is 35 and our president is more than double that. Not that average is better per se. I just get frustrated that the people who are going to be here for the least amount of remaining time are making all the decisions for the world that we have to live in. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not pro trump and will definitely vote Biden. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish our president was younger than my grandparents.
Im very much pro-youth and have high hopes for the younger generations. But there’s also a lot to be said for age earned wisdom. The best scenario is the combined efforts of all generations.
Some of the freedoms we fought for are being taken down by the far right. That’s not generational. It was some of theses oldies who fought for civil rights for people of color, women’s rights and gay rights. We ended the draft so that people had a choice to serve or not serve in the military. The ecology movement took off in the sixties.
There’s still a long way to go and there’ll be one step forward two steps back. It’s exhausting. Generation blaming is counterproductive and only isolates what needs to be a united force for change.
The actual science regarding climate change was discovered over twenty years ago and covered up by Exxon. Al Gore fought hard to get the word out but tithe forces of conglomerates drowned out his message. Had Gore won the election, more would’ve been done to mitigate the damage being done. Instead we got Bush who lied about Saddam Hussain having weapons of mass distraction and declared war on Iraq . Actually I’m not sure if he even declared it, or just invaded Iraq because the U.S. was bigger and more powerful. I wonder how much carbon is released with every bomb that goes off.
The changes and progress that needs to be made can only happen if we are united in our efforts. Young and old.
I too am disappointed in our older generation leaving our planet and nation in such a state. I also wish we had a huge diverse group of candidates that can meet the moment we are in. I also believe that Biden is not a progressive and must be pushed to lean left on policy. I do not believe we have the power to put a progressive candidate up for president. Yet. Which is one reason why People Power United was started. We must build progressive power.
As children we’re taunted by the “big kids” that we are just a “baby”. Those very kids taunting the younger kids that they’re babies are also being teased for being too young or told to get lost by the older kids.
So what is that supposed “perfect age”?
Twenties, while stressing about what to do next. Thirties, have you landed a career? Bought a house? What about kids? Forties? I’m middle aged. Fifties...
I remember thinking 65 was old. We were at Disneyland with my mom and dad. My mom went ahead of us while they were cordoning off the streets for the Disney Parade. The security guards had block me off so I couldn’t get to her and I said “I’ve got to get to my mom, she’s 65!” And they let me through.
Years later, when I was 65 I laughed at myself for thinking 65 was old. At 65 I was re-landscaping my parents back yard. Digging out years of weeds and overgrowth, and building raised garden beds for fruit and vegetables, and plenty of flowers.
I’m 70 now and I think I’m just starting to understand life. I’m starting to get the whole picture. I’m still not old, I’m starting to hit my stride.
I don’t think how long one has been living is of consequence. It’s what a person does with that life and what they have learned that determines their value.
So what does the age of our 2024 candidates matter? The most pertinent question is: Do we want a leader who has experienced the gamut of the what life offers. A person who understands
that life is not a game of monopoly to win at all costs.
This is the choice we have before us. A man of integrity who will act on what he thinks best for the country. Or a man who will wield the power of the presidency to enrich and empower himself. It’s that simple.
Look number one being female and a Veteran plus a AFGE Union Stewart where I'm employed plus being 72 years old. Granted days of respect is few and far between some days. Also being different nationalities does not help for respect from this generations now.
A very good topic, however, ck your facts, it was rolls of paper towels, not T-paper. More must be addressed concerning this ageism issue at multiple levels. These issues are broad and complicated but should not be ignored because it is inconvenient. Let us expand this inquiry.
Shout out to People Power member LL for catching this error. “A very good topic, however, ck your facts, it was rolls of paper towels, not T-paper.” We have corrected.
Nothing amusing about the situation. There is plenty to take Trump to task on, he creates his own reflective humor offered by others, no need involving people who clearly are at a disadvantage and suffering.
Thank you for bringing this up. As a geriatric healthcare provider, I’ve been concerned that President Biden has been a severely victimized by ageism in the media for quite some time, it’s sickening.

Amazing people power effort! Keep up the good trouble!
Sure, shunned at an old bar, but it was me that was old.

If I could like this comment a 1000 times I would!

Bravo! I agree, age is a mindset, and we must champion integrity and public service vs greed and self dealing.
I'm 81 and I don't discriminate against those younger than me . . . even though some are wiser.

Yes but toilet paper is funnier.😂
