  Washington State made history this week by passing a 9.9% tax on income over $1 million — the first income tax in the state’s nearly century-long history — expected to raise more than $3.5 billion per year. The revenue will fund free breakfast and lunch for all 1.1 million K-12 students, expand the Working Families Tax Credit to 460,000 more households, and cut taxes for 65% of small businesses. Governor Bob Ferguson, who has pledged to sign the bill, called the vote historic. Less than half of one percent of Washingtonians will pay the tax, while millions will benefit. Politico

  A senior member of OpenAI’s robotics team publicly resigned on principle after the company announced a partnership with the Pentagon, citing insufficient guardrails against domestic surveillance and lethal autonomous weapons. Caitlin Kalinowski stated clearly: “Surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got.” Her resignation — and the public debate it sparked — represents tech workers using their power to force accountability conversations that executives and governments would prefer to avoid.
