A 200-year-old favela community in Rio de Janeiro secured a historic agreement that ends decades of forced-eviction threats and guarantees residents the right to remain, following a 40-year struggle. The agreement, signed with governmental and institutional actors, formalizes the communityās permanence and clarifies land tenure, especially for Black, low-income families in an area facing intense development pressure. Working in high-need subject areas, nearly 400 licensed teachers in New Mexico will receive up to $6,000 per year in student-loan repayment in exchange for a two-year commitment to underserved schools. The program focuses on STEM, bilingual education, early childhood, special education and schools serving low-income students, supported by a $4.92 million appropriation for FY 2026.
