The SAVE Act Is a Trojan Horse for Suppression
Friends, the SAVE America Act is not election security. It is a Trojan horse for voter suppression. The bill would force people registering for federal elections to present documentary proof of citizenship in person, such as a passport or birth certificate, and would tighten photo ID and mail-ballot rules even though repeated investigations and state audits have found non-citizen voting to be extremely rare. The burden does not land on fraud. It lands on eligible voters: married women whose names changed, rural voters, some tribal citizens, seniors, and working people who do not have easy access to records. The Brennan Center estimates that more than 21 million Americans lack ready access to the documents these bills demand. (reuters.com)

While they keep shouting about the SAVE Act, the Republicans in the Senate have still failed to fully end the Department of Homeland Security funding mess. 50,000 TSA officers have been working without pay, hundreds have quit, and Reuters reported on March 17 that some small airports may have to shut if the impasse continues. Reuters has also reported that FEMA, another DHS agency, faced restrictions on new disaster deployments during the shutdown. This is what governing by distraction looks like: endless political theater while real systems crack. (reuters.com) It should also be noted that Democrats in the House and Senate have offered to pass a budget bill that funds FEMA and TSA but Republicans continue to block it.
And the distractions are not random. They unfold while pressure grows over the administration’s handling of the Epstein files and while Trump’s war with Iran keeps shifting in purpose, price, and political justification. When leaders cannot defend results, they sell panic. When they cannot solve problems, they change the subject (i.e. the Save Act).
And on immigration, Republicans still refuse the one thing this country actually needs: reform that is secure, lawful, and humane. Friendly reminder, the bipartisan Senate border deal in 2024 failed after Trump pushed Republicans to reject it. Meanwhile, Dreamers remain trapped in legal limbo; current DACA recipients can keep protection for now, but the program still hangs on in court. We should be building a system that secures the border, modernizes legal pathways, and gives longtime undocumented neighbors and DACA kids without criminal convictions a fair shot at dignity, stability, and opportunity. That is what serious leadership looks like.
The SAVE Act is the same old playbook in a new box: make voting harder, keep people angry, and hope no one notices the broken agencies, the unanswered questions, the rising costs, and the moral failure of cruelty without reform. We should notice. We should organize. And we should say, with one voice, that power belongs to the people — and every eligible voter must be able to use it.
