We should be sounding every alarm we have: unchecked AI has no place in weapons and war, and parasitic data centers have no place in our communities.
The same government that tells working families there is never enough money for healthcare, housing, clean water, public schools, or climate action is now racing to build the infrastructure for an AI-powered war machine. The Army has already selected companies to develop massive data centers at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, with Carlyle tied to the Fort Bliss project and CyrusOne tied to the Utah project. These are not small projects. They involve thousands of acres of military land and are connected to the military’s growing appetite for AI power. 1
Let’s be clear about what this means: Wall Street gets land, power, profit, and secrecy. Communities get the risk. Families get the higher utility bills. Local water supplies get drained. And our democracy gets pushed further into the shadows while private equity, Big Tech, and the Pentagon build the backbone for more surveillance, more automation, and more war.
Truthout reported that the Army has entered an exclusive negotiation period for long-term, 50-year leases, with the Army compensated through computing capacity to support “warfighting needs” rather than traditional cash rent.2 The same reporting notes that these commercial data centers may also be allowed to sell excess computing capacity. That is not public accountability. That is a sweetheart setup for private power wrapped in military language.
And people are right to resist. Gallup found that seven in ten Americans oppose AI data centers being built in their local area, including nearly half who strongly oppose them.3 The concerns are obvious: land use, electricity demand, water use, pollution, quality of life, and who gets stuck paying the bill?
The environmental threat is severe. In Utah, The Guardian reported that a proposed AI data center footprint could cover more than 40,000 acres, require more power than the entire state currently uses, and draw major water resources in a drought-stressed region.4 This is not “innovation.” This is extraction.
And when this infrastructure is tied to AI warfare, the danger grows even darker. Military AI raises profound questions about who is accountable when machines accelerate surveillance, targeting, and life-or-death decisions. These systems can fail and diffuse accountability when a machine, rather than a person, is making decisions over life and death.
We cannot let corporations and the Pentagon turn our communities into sacrifice zones. Our water is not a bargaining chip. Our electric bills are not Wall Street’s piggy bank. Our public land is not a playground for private equity. And our future must not be handed over to an AI war machine.
Take action now: send a message to your member of Congress and demand accountability for Pentagon AI data centers. Then sign the petition to block the data center utility mega-merger. We need lawmakers, regulators, and local officials to hear us loud and clear: no 50-year giveaways, no unchecked AI weapons pipeline, no corporate utility power grab, and no backroom deals that force communities to pay the price.
