Keep Trump’s Ego Off Our Coins and Currency

There is a real cost to allowing a sitting president to turn America’s money into government-issued merchandise bearing his own face.
Rather than using America’s 250th anniversary to celebrate the millions of people who built, defended, challenged, and strengthened this democracy, the federal government is minting a monument to the man currently occupying the White House. The front of the coin features Donald Trump’s portrait alongside “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776–2026.”
And apparently one Trump coin was not enough.
A separate 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump has already received final design approval from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.1 The approved design depicts Trump standing behind a desk, and the commission even recommended making the gold coin “as large as possible.” Its denomination, price, and release date have not yet been announced.
Read that again.
A sitting president’s administration is preparing another coin featuring the sitting president, this time in 24-karat gold.
It is not too late to stop the gold coin.
It is not too late to close the loophole.
It is not too late to tell this administration: Our money is not Trump merchandise.

And the coins are only part of it.
The Treasury Department has also announced plans to place Trump’s signature on future U.S. paper currency, making him the first sitting president whose signature would appear on legal tender. The change would remove the Treasurer’s signature from paper money for the first time since 1861.
Respecting democratic norms is essential for a healthy republic, and this situation threatens that foundation.
It is branding the presidency onto public property.
Our currency is a symbol of shared values and democracy, not a tool for personal branding or ego.
America has historically been wary of putting living leaders on its money for a reason, reflecting a tradition of avoiding personal glorification on national currency.
Federal law governing printed currency says that only the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency and securities.
For the 2026 semiquincentennial, however, the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act gave the Treasury secretary authority to issue special $1 coins. That law explicitly prohibits portraits of living people on the reverse of those coins. Trump’s portrait is on the obverse, or front.
That is the loophole Congress must close.
Senators Jeff Merkley and Catherine Cortez Masto introduced the Change Corruption Act, S. 3408, which could not be clearer:
“No United States currency may feature the likeness of a living or sitting President.”
Yet as of now, the bill’s last listed congressional action remains its December 9, 2025 referral to the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. Congress has had months to act, and this delay highlights the need for public pressure.
Enough.
Congress should pass the Change Corruption Act and make unmistakably clear that no sitting president, Republican or Democrat, gets to turn the Treasury and U.S. Mint into a personal branding operation. Congress should also act to stop presidential signatures from being placed on our paper currency and block the still-pending 24-karat gold Trump coin before it is minted and sold.
Presidents are public servants, not royalty.
They do not get to stamp their faces across the money in our pockets and then follow it up with a gold-plated monument to themselves.

as far as ‘dead presidents’ on currency & coin….well….he can join the dead if he really wants his name & face on every Fn thing!
I believe it is a wise idea that we maintain and instill that are currency only depicts Dead Presidents. It has sent a precedence before all Presidents.
