Stop Trump’s Presidential Power Grab
Take Action to reject Trump’s presidential power grab, defend checks and balances, and hold presidents accountable under the Constitution.
The Constitution Says “We the People,” Not “I, the President”
Friends,
America was not founded to be ruled by one man. Our Constitution does not begin with “I, the President.” It begins with “We the People” because power in this country is supposed to belong to the people, not to one politician, one party, one billionaire class, or one authoritarian movement.
That is why Congress must stop treating Donald Trump’s presidential power grab like politics as usual.
At the center of this crisis is the dangerous idea known as unitary executive theory. Its most extreme supporters argue that the president should have sweeping control over the executive branch, including agencies Congress created to operate with independence. Trump’s own White House order declared “Presidential supervision and control of the entire executive branch,” including independent agencies.1
This is not a technical debate. This is a democracy alarm bell.
When a president claims the power to control agencies, fire independent officials, replace experts with loyalists, and bend law enforcement toward personal or political goals, the presidency stops looking like public service and starts looking like a throne. The Trump administration has also moved to strip civil service protections from federal workers under a revived Schedule F-style framework, a move critics warn could politicize the federal workforce and make it easier to replace experts with loyalists.2
And the danger is no longer theoretical.
This is exactly why unchecked presidential power is so dangerous. When one man can send the United States military to seize another country’s leader and his wife, as Trump did with Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores in Venezuela, without real congressional accountability, we are no longer talking about ordinary foreign policy.3 We are talking about a president acting like the Constitution is optional.
When one man can authorize or defend boat strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific that have reportedly killed 193 people across at least 58 attacks, and only afterward face an inspector general inquiry into whether proper procedures were followed, that is not accountability.4 That is power moving first and oversight arriving too late.
And when one man can drag this country toward war, launch attacks tied to Iran without Congress first authorizing war, and force lawmakers to scramble afterward to reassert their constitutional authority, that is not strength. That is a presidential power grab.
The Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war for a reason. No president should be allowed to bomb, kill, capture foreign leaders, or push America into war while Congress shrugs, hides, delays, or rubber-stamps after the fact.
The corruption concerns are just as alarming. Trump and his family are tied to World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture that has raised serious conflict-of-interest questions while Trump holds presidential power. Reuters has reported that the Trump family’s crypto venture overlaps with major crypto industry networks and that Trump’s presidency, crypto advocacy, business interests, and regulatory shifts have raised concerns about conflicts of interest.5
Now the danger has reached a new level. The Justice Department approved a settlement that, according to MS Now, permanently bars the IRS from auditing Trump, his family, and his companies for tax claims filed before the settlement date.6 The agreement is tied to Trump dropping his lawsuit over the leak of his tax returns and includes the creation of a nearly $1.8 billion fund for people claiming harm from political “weaponization.”
Let’s call this what it is: a five-alarm warning for democracy. No president should be allowed to seize foreign leaders, bomb boats, kill people, move toward war without Congress, profit through private crypto ventures, weaponize the Justice Department against political enemies, and then benefit from a settlement that blocks tax accountability for himself, his family, and his companies.
That is not public service. That is not law and order. That is what happens when presidential power is allowed to swallow checks and balances whole.
Congress cannot abdicate its power to the president. Congress cannot surrender oversight. Congress cannot allow any president to turn independent agencies into loyalty machines, the Justice Department into a political weapon, the military into a private tool of force, or public office into a family business.
We need Congress to publicly reject unitary executive theory, investigate extremist agendas like Project 2025, protect independent agencies and civil servants, defend inspectors general and whistleblowers, and reassert its constitutional authority over war, spending, oversight, and accountability.
The Constitution does not belong to Donald Trump. It does not belong to MAGA Republicans. It does not belong to billionaires, loyalists, or political insiders.
It belongs to us.
Congress must do its job. Hold presidents accountable. Defend checks and balances. Protect our rights, freedoms, rule of law, and democracy before this presidential power grab becomes the new normal.
Why the Grassroots Resistance Can’t Wait
People Power United members believe change is possible because we have seen ordinary people rise, organize, and be a force for progress. Real change does not come from waiting politely, staying quiet, or hoping those in power suddenly grow a conscience. It comes when people speak out, show up, and demand action—because our communities and families cannot wait, and every moment we delay gives injustice more room to tighten its grip on our communities.
Heads up: Tomorrow, MAGA Republicans are holding a hit-job hearing targeting the Southern Poverty Law Center. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to stand with an organization that stood up to the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups — not the gaslighters trying to spin hate for political gain. Can you sign on to support them here? Good News and Progress from the Resistance
People Power United exists because silence is not an option. We help people understand what is at stake, who is being harmed, who is responsible, and what we can do next. We turn fear into action, outrage into organizing, and truth into people power.
And today, I am asking from the heart: please consider becoming a paid subscriber.
Free subscribers are deeply valued in this community. Every reader, every share, every action matters. But paid subscribers make this work possible.
Your support helps us publish independent news and action alerts, keep this work accessible to people who cannot afford to pay, and build a movement that is not funded by billionaires, corporations, or special interests.
We are powered by people.
People Power United now reaches more than 340,000 digital subscribers, a level of reach comparable to some major news outlets. That means our reach is up there with major news outlets like the Los Angeles Times (243,000 digital subscribers), The Boston Globe (260,500 digital subscribers), USA Today (142,212 digital subscribers), and the Chicago Tribune (152,255 digital subscribers) when it comes to digital reach. But we do not have billionaire owners, corporate advertisers, or deep institutional pockets behind us. Those outlets often have hundreds of staffers, and sometimes more than 1,000 people, supporting their journalism, technology, business, marketing, and operations. We do not have that kind of legacy infrastructure behind us. We have people power. We have truth. We have action. And if even a small share of this community becomes paid subscribers, we can keep building independent, people-powered news and actions that are enough to meet this moment.
We generally send only one email/post a day, so you can stay informed without being overwhelmed. And if you want more throughout the day, you can follow our Substack notes feed or our Social Media channels, which are updated multiple times a day with breaking news, urgent actions, movement updates, daily inspiration, and ways to stay engaged.Attacks on immigrants, reproductive freedom, the courts, the climate, voting rights, workers, public education, and basic human dignity are all part of the same authoritarian project.
And our answer must be just as connected.
Freedom over fascism. Progress over fear. Power to the people.
If People Power United helps you stay grounded, informed, hopeful, and ready to act, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription today. Your support helps us continue this work, expand our reach, and build the people-powered infrastructure this moment demands.
This is not just about a newsletter. It is about building a community that speaks out, shows up, and refuses to surrender our rights, freedoms, the rule of law, or democracy.
This moment demands more than silence, cynicism, or doomscrolling.
It demands truth. It demands courage. It demands community. It demands action.
And it demands all of us.
Please become a paid subscriber today and help power this work forward.

It is very scary to reading about this unitary executive theory. When one politician can controlling all independent agencies and fire experts for replacing them with loyalists, it destroy the whole country
