Defend the Vote and Demand Care, Not Cruelty
Hey there!
We receive a lot of messages from visitors to this page asking the same question: When is the next No Kings mobilization?
That question tells us something powerful. People understand that what is happening in this country is not normal—and they are looking for meaningful ways to respond.
Two major mobilizations are happening in August to remind those in power that America belongs to the people—not Donald Trump, not Republican extremists, not billionaires, and not corporations buying influence behind closed doors.
But before we discuss these events, we need to be absolutely clear:
This Is Go Time
Mobilizations, marches, and rallies are chances for us to unite, feel connected, and remind those feeling isolated that they are part of a powerful movement.
But our work cannot begin and end at a rally.
This is the moment to help people register to vote, check their status, learn about voting requirements, and create a personal plan for when, where, and how they will vote, empowering them to take control. Take Action by bookmarking and sharing our Ballot & Voting Information page.
Now is the time to organize, volunteer, reach voters, support grassroots leaders and groups, and help elect candidates committed to freedom over fascism, progress, and power to the people.
Do not assume that everyone you know is registered.
Do not assume that their registration is still active.
Do not assume that they know when early voting begins, where their polling place is located, or what restrictions Republican lawmakers may have imposed.
Ask them.
Help them.
Bring them with you.
Our outrage must become organization. Our fear must become courage. Our frustration must become action.
Authoritarian movements depend on exhaustion, confusion, isolation, and surrender. They want people to believe resistance is pointless. They want us scrolling helplessly while they seize more power, dismantle institutions, suppress votes, terrorize communities, and transfer public wealth into the hands of the rich and powerful.
We are not giving them that victory.
We will not obey. We will not cower. We will show up, speak out, and build power to hold them accountable to the will of the people.
August Recess: Fund Care, Not Cruelty
Trump and Republicans in Congress are smashing through constitutional safeguards, attacking our communities, and pouring staggering amounts of public money into a cruel immigration-enforcement machine.
Now, members of Congress are preparing to return to their districts for the August recess—and that means they are returning to us.
They may hope to hide behind carefully managed events, friendly audiences, locked office doors, and scripted talking points. They may hope we forget how they voted while they pose for photographs and pretend to care about working families.
We will not forget.
The Republicans who approved $140 billion for ICE and Border Patrol must answer to the communities paying the price. While families struggle with groceries, housing, healthcare, childcare, utilities, and education, Congress is pouring public money into detention, deportations, surveillance, raids, and militarized enforcement.
That is not public safety. It is cruelty funded instead of care.
Popular Democracy and partners are organizing district actions during the August recess so lawmakers hear directly from the people they represent.

Schedule a Meeting With Your Lawmakers
Speaking of holding lawmakers accountable, we have dusted off our Civic Engagement Guide: How to Lobby Your Elected Leaders—and there could not be a better time to use it. Holding lawmakers accountable is crucial.
Lobbying is not reserved for wealthy corporations, professional influence peddlers, or people with expensive suits and insider connections.
We are the people. These are our offices. These lawmakers work for us.
You have every right to request a meeting with your senator, representative, or their staff. You have every right to ask how they voted, why they voted that way, and what they intend to do next.
You can meet individually or organize a small group from your community. You can request meetings in person or via Zoom.

March on Washington: Defend the Vote
The second major mobilization happening this month is the March on Washington: Defend the Vote, where we will stand together to protect voting rights and democracy.
On Friday, August 28, 2026, people from across the country will gather at the Lincoln Memorial and National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Hosted by Reverend Al Sharpton, the National Action Network, and the Drum Major Institute—and led alongside Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters King, and other civil-rights leaders—the march will commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
But we are not gathering simply to admire history.
We are gathering because history is calling us.
The dream is an assignment.
It is an obligation to defend the vote.
It is an obligation to demand economic dignity.
It is an obligation to protect equal opportunity.
It is an obligation to build a country where every person—regardless of race, religion, gender, disability, income, immigration status, identity, or ZIP code—has dignity, safety, freedom, and the opportunity to thrive.
The 1963 March on Washington was not powerful because people stayed home and agreed silently. It was powerful because ordinary people traveled from across the nation, stood together, and forced America to confront the distance between its promises and its reality.
On August 28, we add our footsteps to theirs.

We know many people are looking for buses and transportation from communities across the country. The official march organizers are collecting information from groups interested in filling, sponsoring, or hosting buses, and additional schedules and regional details will be released as they are finalized. Register now so you can receive updates and help organizers understand where transportation is needed.
If you represent an organization, union, congregation, student group, community network, or grassroots coalition, please sign up. We will share information about becoming an official partner and mobilizing your members as it becomes available.

No single march, organization, candidate, or leader can save our democracy for us—the responsibility belongs to all of us. Register voters, check your own registration, make a voting plan, volunteer, support grassroots organizers, meet with lawmakers, attend the August recess call, organize outside congressional offices, sign up for the March on Washington, and invite your family, friends, neighbors, congregation, union, community group, and coworkers to join you. Bring five people, and ask each of them to bring five more.
Those trying to build an authoritarian state are counting on us to become tired, divided, distracted, or convinced that our actions do not matter. Let us prove them wrong.
This is our country, our communities, and our democracy—and we will not surrender them to cruelty, corruption, or authoritarianism. We will show up, speak out, organize, defend the vote, and build the people power needed to move America toward freedom, dignity, justice, progress, and power to the people.
