As you know, our daily People Power United newsletter usually breaks down an issue and offers a call to action on a wide range of topics. But some issues demand deeper, ongoing attention. Our column Freedom Over Fascism, for example, zeroes in on authoritarianism. And while we’ve touched on Trump’s economic sabotage before, the scope of the damage has grown too big to treat in passing.
That’s why we’re launching a dedicated series to track this crisis. We’re also rolling out two new additions: a section on the NO KINGS Movement and a Humanitarian Watch piece. These will live under the People Power United site and they are included with your subscription. All of this is meant to equip you with information, resources, and actions to strengthen your advocacy.
Alright, let’s dive in. The economy is a massive issue, but our aim here is to keep things clear and focused on the big picture: rising prices and out-of-control costs fueled by the incompetence of Trump’s policies.
This isn’t policy—it’s a power grab. And it’s up to us to stop it.
Groceries are more expensive, housing costs are soaring, jobs are drying up, and families are drowning in debt. None of this is an accident—it’s economic sabotage.
Donald Trump and his accomplices are weakening the foundations of our economy to consolidate power and enrich the wealthy few.
From mass deportations that ripped 155,000 farmworkers1 out of the fields during peak harvest—sending food prices higher2—to construction shortages3 that worsen the housing crisis, Trump is engineering scarcity. His reckless tariff wars are a hidden tax on every family, jacking up the cost of lumber, furniture, and groceries while cutting off farmers from their biggest markets.4
Meanwhile, the core Consumer Price Index is up 3.1%5, wholesale prices are soaring6, and the University of Michigan shows consumer sentiment plunging7 as inflation fears spread. US Debt has hit a record $37 trillion8, unemployment is at a four-year high9, and July delivered a pitiful 73,000 new jobs.10
And while families struggle, Trump’s $170 billion deportation machine11 never shuts down—not even during government shutdowns. Public safety suffers as thousands of officers are diverted away from fighting terrorism, trafficking, and violent crime to serve his cruel agenda.12 Watchdogs are defunded, prosecutors fired, and our institutions are gutted to eliminate accountability.
The result? An oligarchic endgame where the wealthiest 10% now drive nearly half of all U.S. spending13, the gender pay gap is widening, and workers lose ground while billionaires tighten their grip.
A Call to Action
We cannot shrug off this economic sabotage as “chaos” or “incompetence.” It is deliberate. This isn’t mismanagement. Every policy enacted results in broken trust in our rule of law and democracy, it weakens our institutions, and it seems to enrich a tiny elite while ordinary Americans suffer.
The solution is not despair but defiance. We must demand accountability: restore oversight, protect immigrant labor that sustains our food and housing supply, roll back tariffs that punish families, and confront the corruption of power consolidation head-on.
Because this fight is bigger than groceries or gas—it’s about the survival of our rights, freedoms, rule of law, and democracy.
Unless we speak out, show up, build power, and demand accountability, Trump’s economy will leave our families struggling, our communities weaker, our democracy hollowed out, and power concentrated in the hands of the few.
I know this is hard—but I also know we have something stronger: the power of the people. When we come together, speak out, and show up, we are the force that can turn this around.

All Trump does is makes life more expensive and harder for the American people.
And people need to put pressure on their Republican congress people. Lots of it. I'd think there's leverage there. I'm in a blue state so we gotta hold the line.
