Happy National Voter Registration Day!
Laurie, do I detect a little giddiness?
You absolutely do!
Because this right here is one of the linchpins of people power.
Look around the world. In places like Russia, political power is concentrated, genuine opposition is suppressed, and elections are manipulated. In North Korea, people live under a one-party totalitarian dictatorship with virtually no meaningful political choice.
That is why I will never treat our ability to register, vote, organize, speak out, and hold our government accountable as just a civic duty, but as a way to truly empower ourselves.
This is power.
We can complain about the cost of groceries, housing, health care, gas, wages, corruption, dysfunction in Washington, or any of the hundred other things making people want to scream at the television. Voting is how we influence policies on these issues directly affecting our daily lives.
Or we can use the tools democracy gives us.
Register.
Vote.
Help someone else register, share information about upcoming elections, or volunteer with local civic groups. Every action counts in strengthening our democracy and making your voice heard.
Show up.
Speak out.
And after Election Day, keep showing up and holding the people we elect accountable, reinforcing that our involvement is ongoing and impactful.
National Voter Registration Day1 is deliberately nonpartisan. Since it began in 2012, its partners have helped register more than 6.5 million Americans, all around one simple idea: more eligible Americans should be able to participate in our democracy.
Remember, registration rules and deadlines vary from state to state, so checking your status matters to ensure your voice is heard, especially if you have moved or changed your name.
So yes, I’m giddy.
Because today is another opportunity to remind somebody:
We the people still have power.
But power sitting on the sidelines changes nothing.
We have to use it.

I've been registered to vote for 46 years, but I've never felt the need to check it until this year. I've checked my registration in PA at least 5 times this year...
